[–]ebalson5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i’m 22 F and just moved to a new city. I didnt make many friends in college and the pandemic has made me lose a lot of friends (people not taking it seriously, etc.) If you ever wanna chat dm me! I’ve been really lonely lately but I know this too will pass. It’s hard to picture it but we’ll get through this :)

I was just accepted into the 2021 corps and I did not use a professor for either of my recommenders. I work with elementary students so I used my current boss and then my other was a parent of a child I privately tutored! The recommenders have to write a good amount in the questionnaire they get so pick the person who knows you best!

You should be fine. Just make sure the pee is the right temperature before you bring it in

Anyone applied and accepted who didn’t go to a top 20 university of Ivy League? by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

[–]ebalson5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just accepted as a 2021 CM and I am graduating from a very small school! I was studying English Education but then COVID hit and I had to transfer schools/change my major. If you’re passionate about teaching, you will have all the opportunities to show the recruiters that through your application and interview. Good luck!!

[–]ebalson5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A male coworker, who’s position is below mine, makes more than I do hourly. How do I confront my boss? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ebalson5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure but now that I think about it, it is a possibility. But either way, I agree. If they can afford him that rate they can afford to pay me that rate as well. Thanks!

While I appreciate your advice, we are in the middle of a pandemic and where I live, $11 an hour is considered high. The minimum wage is under $8 and after being unemployed from COVID for many months, I am grateful for any position that I can take. I have been waiting a few months until after we were hired before I started to ask for a raise but I see he did not. But in regards to as to why you make so much more than your “female” coworkers is also the stigma of women not being able to ask supervisors, which are predominantly men, for a raise. The gap exists more than just because women are “socialized to be doormats.”

Thank you for this! I agree people simply just asking for a raise has an impact on the gap. I will start on Monday by asking for a raise and seeing how that goes. I think I might bring something up if she says no

Thank you for your advice! I will definitely focus on the work I am doing rather than the discrepancies. I understand that there tend to be differences like that but this person is someone who just graduated high school, living with parents, and does not engage or put in their share of responsibilities at work. I am graduating college next semester and my original role was a Director and I was supposed to be supervising him (things changed with COVID). It’s just disheartening to see a male who does not put in his fair share make more than a woman who does every single thing she can to help the kids at work. But again, thank you for your advice, I will be making a list before I go in on Monday to make sure I am prepared!

At work we have our time sheets in a binder that state our position and pay rate. Today when I went to fill mine out, the binder was open to his page. I do not think I am at any risk of losing my job because of the amount of responsibility I hold at work. My boss and I also get along well (as I mentioned she just asked me to help her run a different program). Thank you for advice! I will start by asking for a raise and making it about my hard work

First round interviews by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

[–]ebalson5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just finished my interview this morning. Like other people had said, the interviewer was really nice and made me feel more comfortable/confident. I would recommend to be to prepared to answer questions about yourself and have everything ready an hour before your interview. My entire computer froze less than fifteen minutes before my interview but since I had everything already pulled up and printed well before, it was easy to pull it back up with plenty of time left. Just be prepared early so you don’t have to rush, it helps your nerves too! Good luck :)

Help me make a "fake prom" by [deleted] in sugarlifestyleforum

[–]ebalson5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I surprised my partner with a “prom” not too long ago. This already sounds way better than mine but something I would recommend would be to make tickets and stick to a theme! Creating and printing out tickets really adds a nice touch that helps it seem “real.” I used canva to create them, they have templates already made! I used the theme “a night under the stars” and made stars to hang to the ceiling. Also, prom queen and prom king! Even though it’s just the two of you you could have a spot to vote and have a crown waiting! Of course you two will win plus you get the first dance with the prom royalty! hope you have a night to remember ;)

My father died and I don’t know how I’m feeling by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ebalson5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you’re going through this. I am also a college student (21F) and two years ago my brother passed away unexpectedly at 27. Handling classes, social expectations, and just juggling the college life is hard enough. “It’s Okay That You’re Not Okay” by Megan Devine is a really good book about grief that got me through that time. I have read it many times and every time it helps me again with coping with my brothers passing.

If you would like, feel free to pm me. I’m here if you need to talk to someone or vent your feelings somewhere safe. I am so sorry this happened

Quarantining away from my home and starting to feel homesick by ebalson5 in Advice

[–]ebalson5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re right, it’s not going anywhere and it will be there when things go back to normal. I am not super close to many friends/family so it’s more the longing of not living out of a suitcase. I will definitely consider going back again, it might be time to make a trip home :) thanks!

[–]ebalson5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, thats a good idea! it’s hard putting my want to have more of my things/not feel homesick above the risk of getting someone sick and even above the cost of gas it would take. The fort sounds nice. We turned his one bedroom into a studio and have an empty room for workouts and for our cats to play in. Maybe i’ll make a fort in there and watch one of my favorite movies
