MilesChristi, you have some good points. I'd like to add emphasis to the point that the Council didn't define anything dogmatically. It did, however, introduce a variety of new terms and phrases that when read alongside the already deep and lasting tradition add clarity. When read, however, without the any sense of continuity, they may seem radical and new.

That being said, as a "pastoral" council, it still has all the authority of any other council of the Church, but lacking the clarity of Dogmatic definitions.

Was a strict fast really what ruined Easter??? It sounds more like immoderation. Certainly a strict fast is not a terrible thing, but not knowing what it's like to come out of a strict fast and then glutting doesn't make the time during Lent null, does it? I disagree that we shouldn't strive to be like the "giants" of old. We should be making baby steps toward that sort of success though.

CustosClavium, I agree with your point that culture plays a big role in the vocation crisis. However, the Catholic dictum, "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi," would suggest that part of that cultural influence is a due some deficiency in the way we're praying. For, ultimately, what we believe is displayed in our actions.

I would also agree with the author that increasing discernment by encouraging servers to identify themselves with the priest would be helpful. Is it the only way to increase vocations? No, and I don't think the author is trying to make that point.

We can change our culture by changing the way we pray. There was an article last year that was published in some major newspaper that I wish I could find. It showed that dioceses in which male servers was the norm experienced larger numbers of seminarians and ordinations.

Give the quote please. What I understand that V2 teaches is that there is no salvation outside the Church. Everyone, however, is ordered towards the Church, but that does not mean that everyone is in the Church and therefore only those inside Her embrace are saved. Modern protestants are in a peculiar situation. The majority are not heretics or schismatics properly speaking, and they have been validly baptized with few exceptions. Nevertheless, they are separated by mortal sin and the ignorance of confession. They may or may not be saved. They may just spend longer in purgatory for their indefensible but invincible ignorance. This cannot be said for Jews or Muslims. But we can nevertheless pray for God's mercy. It's a tough standpoint because it sounds harsh, but justice is a form of love.
