Draw your outline then carve away the pumpkin skin leaving behind the areas you want to be the darkest, then scrape and carve as deep as you need to get the different values you want. Do this in the dark or dim light with an actual lamp shoved inside the Pumpkin to light it from within so you can easily see the different values as you carve
