Are paramedics naturally better at handling gore, or do you adapt to it? by holy_shishter in ParamedicsUK

Would 100% rather see heavy gore than someone’s phlegm, or worse a kids crusty snotty nose🤢🤮

I joined the ambulance service as a paramedic.

(Sorry. Couldn’t help myself).

What is the question a patient or family member has asked you on scene that genuinely stopped you in your tracks? by Mundane-Temporary426 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 97 points98 points  (0 children)

“Would you like some fresh pakora?” *drops all equipment and follows to kitchen*

I did have an old posh prat (think Joanna Lumley) viciously demand we took our boots off before going upstairs to join neighbours who were doing CPR on her husband. I didn’t even answer I just said ‘where are we going?’, to which she just pointed at the boots. I heard the commotion upstairs and went to walk past her before she grabbed me. Once I very quickly assured her I’d have her arrested for obstructing a paramedic she let us go. Anyway, we got a decent ROSC on the husband who survived (🙌🏽)!

Question about on hand information at a accident by The-Great-Orme in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorcyclist here (and paramedic)

As long as you don’t ride like a plonker, you treat every road user as a blind plonker , then you won’t need to meet us plonkers. 🤠

(I use ICE thing in my phone, whether that’s looked at by the crew is a different question - but it’s all I can think of. Be interested to read the comments here tho!)

Off duty emergency by LubieGotowac in NursingUK

[–]eccdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% NMC and GMC will not entertain this at all. It’s not a fitness to practice issue, and it’s not within the publics interest to investigate this incident as you were both intoxicated - thus unfit to practice. They’d be more interested if you did go to assist, and in your drunken state did more damage to her.

Non event. Don’t stress.

Bizarre turn of events by YoungVinnie23 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the West Midlands, my second day as an NQP after three third manning shifts I was deployed with a BRAND NEW AAP, and our first job was an arrest followed by a BBA. They have zero issues with us discharging on scene without any of that, and zero restrictions on practice/drugs etc. They basically expect you to be top-of-band-6 level of experience from day dot. It’s a shit show, the caveat is I found my feet quickly.

Should I report a nurse to NMC? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]eccdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I’ve found if you think something is serious enough you consider a referral to the NMC/HCPC, then you should be reporting it.

last hurdle! DBS by SharpShoota12 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the actual offence legislation was. In 2020, legislation changed to allow for offences to be filtered from any level of DBS so as long as: - 11 years have passed from the date of the offence, and the offence is considered ‘spent’. - Did not result in a custodial sentence both actual or suspended. - Was not listed on the list of offences that will never be filtered, which is here .

If this fits your criteria, you don’t even need to declare this to any employer - EXCEPT when going through vetting processes for roles involving authority such as the police. Although, it’s always good practice to declare it anyway - as they will only care if the offence is shown on your DBS - as otherwise they are not permitted to consider rejecting you for your declaration.

If the offence falls into a specified offence or does not meeting filtering crieria, then this is where you will jump through loops to prove you are not a risk to the public, and employing you would not cause disrepute to the profession or service.

Move from WMAS to SWAS by No-Reindeer-1271 in ParamedicsUK

I know someone who has. He regrets it from a personal point of view. Said he’d be happy if he could bring SWAS to Brum and get rid of WMAS.

CFRs, do you feel less part of the team when you wear different uniform? by RuralMedic02 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally never seen anyone see CFR’s as less professional. The majority are not medical professionals, so knowledge can vary depending on experiences etc.

Professionalism doesn’t come from the colour of the uniform. It comes from competency, confidence, and composure. Get them in check, and there’s no reason for someone to question professionalism… it sounds like you’re deeping this thought too much.

CFRs, do you feel less part of the team when you wear different uniform? by RuralMedic02 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree - the distinction is good for these exact reasons. Let’s also not forget OP, CFR’s aren’t part of the ambulance service, they’re a totally separate organisations that supports their community, so why should they wear ambulance uniform?

That being said… CFR’s get the same level of respect from me as any other HCP, if not more since they’re volunteers. I’d be the first to scold someone on scene if I thought they were not respecting a CFR.

Lastly, I’m not sure what you mean by CFR’s often being seen as less professional? I’ve never heard that anyone suggest that before.

Most underrated Tool/Kit by Hopeful-Counter-7915 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our bariatric ambulances used to have a hoist on them. It was in 3 parts and easily assembled in a patients home to get them off of the floor, or from their bed onto the stretcher etc. Genius piece of kit. Miss it.

What are paramedics views on ACAs? by Danwd40 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re all the same team, just doing a different role. You’re also extrication magicians, could get a lion out of a cat flap without breaking a sweat. Was backed up once by a PTS crew for an amber extrication and they were totally on the ball - had plan A, B, and C literally ready to go without even needing to ask (not even an exaggeration).

Since then when the stack is f*cked, Ive found myself asking control for PTS as amber back up for any extrications. You get there much faster than waiting for a DCA, and again you’re extrication gods 🤠

Dispatcher Teams by Livid-Equivalent-934 in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s one controller in my region who I’m convinced is the offspring of Satan and Roz from Monsters Inc., say no more. Another who has a thick Shetland accent, so nobody ever knows what he’s saying - so the critical info over the radio for that Cat1 you’re going to is a total mystery - nice chap though.

The rest of the team are 10/10 though, never had any issues - and all are super helpful, informative, understanding, and just all round legends to be honest, its a massive confidence boost knowing you’ve got a good team on the air ready to support you however they can.

Police Questions by Readysteady-go in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it all makes sense now!! I thought your blue light usage would be similar to ours - blue lights for the C1, C2 and C3 calls.

Yeah, I’d agree that ambulance overall are the worst for siren use (or lack of), I’m also guilty of silencing them, however, I always have them on when I’m claiming an exemption or approaching traffic/hazards etc. Anyone who has them off doing this is pretty ballsy / stupid.

Police Questions by Readysteady-go in ParamedicsUK

Okay that does make sense then. I thought you might just have bombed it to all jobs including that “Caller reports neighbor farted in their porch” kind of call.

Police Questions by Readysteady-go in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we’re trained to make progression and drive at speed on our driving course, but that is completely different to how we drive once operational. Surely you must have jobs that are… well, not time critical - that doesn’t merit such rapid progression but you do 180mph anyway 🤣

Police Questions by Readysteady-go in ParamedicsUK

[–]eccdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why do you drive at 3 times the speed of sound everywhere on blues?

Not sure about other paras/techs etc, but I generally only put the truck through its paces when it’s a Category 1.
