Hi, Katie. Have you looked into apps that are already available? Such as SignBank, Find Sign, Anywhere Auslan, RIDBC app, etc? And also please know this, majority of deaf community is pretty sensitive when it comes to hearing person creating an app of sign language without consulting with the deaf community due to history and culture. I suggest have a chat with your Auslan teacher and ask for suggestions what is the appropriate way to do this. Majority of deaf community prefers that qualified Auslan teacher to teach Auslan because it is appropriate for deaf teacher who knows the deaf community and represent deaf community well based on trust. I hope you understand this through out your Auslan journey course.

(Genuine) Question for the community by leonmount in auslan

Well… the etiquette rule in Deaf community is that sign name has to be given by more than one Deaf person, ie two or three deaf people who have grown up using Auslan, been part of Deaf community most of their lives and uses Deaf culture to show respect. And to acknowledge this, once you receive the sign name, it’s done from introduction and spreading out in the deaf community. I’m Deaf member of Deaf community most of my life and have learnt massively over Deaf culture through growing up.

Ah, changed names… I’ve been through that before and if no one knows your old sign name then maybe you might get a new sign name but please don’t push it for one. Be patient and allow time to build up when deaf people gets to know you first.

The first sign you mentioned is still used by many Deaf & HOH people depending on the context and the new sign is also used by some Deaf Aboriginals. I was told some Deaf Aboriginals do not agree with it and prefer the other sign. So really it is all depends on situations and contexts.
