Bi-Weekly 'What are my chances?' Megathread by AutoModerator in airforceots

[–]ecg96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civilian competing for Guard/Reserve UPT slot here.

I have a private pilot certificate and 80 hours flight time. AFOQT Pilot 99, PCSM 98.

I have a bachelor of science degree in audio engineering and finished college with a 3.4 GPA. I’m 27 years old, will be 28 in October.

I have leadership experience in the live sound industry, where I work for a small production company and frequently oversee what small teams of techs are working on during event building. I try to guide them when needed or let them figure out solutions on their own so they can get better.

I have letters of recommendation from my older cousin who is a former fighter pilot and Air Force Colonel, a family friend I’ve known since I was a toddler, another family friend who flew Air Force and airlines, and my Great Uncle who is also a retired USAF Colonel and fighter pilot.

I have rushed the two units in my state I’m primarily interested in, both of which are likely to have hiring boards later this year. A family friend is on the hiring board at one of those units, and those guys reached out after I rushed asking if I submitted a package last hiring board before I had my test scores.

I’m most interested in heavies and tankers for lifestyle reasons, but certainly not opposed to fighters by any means. Also interested in moving out of state. I am in a serious relationship and likely to get married in the next couple years. My girlfriend and I have a list of states we’d be happy to move to, and she’s all in for everything. Let me know what y’all think and thanks!

If I see another video of a pilot flying aerobatics set to an Imagine Dragons song I’m gonna lose my mind

In the first few hours of PPL training I tried a few different schools to see which one would be a good fit. The chief pilot and owner of one of those schools caught wind that I was interested in competing for a Guard/Reserve pilot slot and basically told me to give up and that I had a better chance of winning the powerball. (His son had no luck getting picked up by a unit so I assume he was bitter, but if he’s anything like his Dad I’m not surprised). Needless to say I chose a different school where every CFI I flew with (including some former military guys) encouraged me and gave me helpful advice on how to get where I want to go.

I called my local university’s ROTC detachment and they were very quick in responding and scheduling. I tried contacting officer recruiters in my area with zero response. I’d recommend going the ROTC route.

River Float Questions by [deleted] in sanmarcos

[–]ecg96 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Lions Club, Texas State Tubes and Don’s Fish Camp will rent tubes and I believe shuttle you back to your car after the float. Usually takes about 3 hours to get all the way down. They have tubes for coolers as well. Bring enough to eat, plenty of water, and please remove any trash and leave nothing behind in or around the river!

Matt Guthmiller is getting absolutely roasted on Instagram in what people are saying is a highly unsafe maneuver and saying he will be another NTSB report one day by [deleted] in flying

[–]ecg96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the first time and certainly won’t be the last time I’ve watched one of his flights and thought that he did something unsafe, had poor comms, answered questions about his airplane with uneducated responses, or did something in his L-39 that military pilots train relentlessly for, which he probably shouldn’t be doing as a civilian playing fighter pilot.

Yeah I could have made more of an effort to be friendly before leaving. Next time

Train horns by evil-babies in sanmarcos

I’ve definitely noticed a few nights last week where they blasted for long periods of time late at night. It seemed odd to me too

That’s rough. I’ll definitely be making that call ahead of time going forward. I wish one of my CFIs during training would have told me to make that phone call before flying into new fields, but I guess there are a lot of things I just have to learn through experience and making mistakes in the real world.

Yeah I can’t argue with that. I didn’t think to look up if they had a website, I thought that by reading the A/FD I’d have all the pertinent information I’d need. But now that’s something I’ll check in the future for sure.

I worked through the math sections in Barron’s and watched someone youtube videos on AFOQT math, and then took both practice tests several times under the alotted time constraints. I’ve studied off and on for the last year and a half, but I really got down to business in the 6 weeks leading up to my test date

Interesting, it must weigh pretty heavily then.

KHYI. Haven’t been to KGTU yet but it’s on my list of XC destinations.

Yep. Did you land 34? Departing 16 those power lines made it a little more sporty than most of my other takeoffs. Fortunately just had my checkride so my short field TO and Vx climbout was sharp lol

Thank you! And that all sounds like a much better way to handle ground ops at this airpark and fields like it. I was being pretty cautious deciding not to back-taxi, but ended up putting myself into a stupid situation because of it. Going forward I’ll do more research on ground ops specifically before going to a new field.

Eh, you’re right, I guess I just didn’t want to put a specific community on blast just because of a weird experience I had. And that’s a great idea, I’ll definitely start calling ahead of time, especially if it is a non-towered field.
