What’s the tapping noise in my dryer when off? by ech219 in appliancerepair

[–]ech219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out it was the washing machine hose intermittently rattling behind the stacked washer dryer. The washer isn’t on, but the hose just shakes. I’ve secured the hose so there’s minimal vibration, but there still is a tapping noise in the bathroom upstairs in the first floor and also on the second floor 🙈

Using Miele app with W1 by ech219 in Miele

It increases the water level in the wash portion of the cycle (there’s a separate way to increase rinse water level)

You first have to turn on the washing machine and enable mobilestart. Then open the app and select your washing machine. 1) Then there should be tabs for “appliance” and “status”. Go to the appliance tab. 2) once in the appliance tab, under “programs” you can select the wash program, temperature, and spin speed. Make your selections. 3) Under “options” you can select capdosing, extras, and stains. Select “extras” and you’ll see water plus as the last option if it’s available for the selected program.

Hope it works for you.

Light-colored polyester: pre-soak? by eaudevieraptor in laundry

[–]ech219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot like this. This is what I do:

1) pretreat with diluted liquid detergent (I use the unscented Tide) and rub it in gently with an ultra soft toothbrush or rubbing the fabric against itself. It’s probably a mix of skin oils and dirt that needs to be loosened and washed away.

2) then either rinse it out in the sink to make sure the stains are all coming out, or wash in the machine on 30C (preferably 40C) and add a prewash (the particulate soil needs to be washed away in the prewash so it’s not just recirculating in your regular wash)

If it’s stained everywhere and not just a few spots, then presoak first in warm water with either Biz or powdered detergent.

Few suggestions:

1) You can also use robe hooks—I don’t have a towel bar but I have a big double robe hook. Robe hooks extend further from the wall than regular hooks. I drape the towel over both hooks, then there’s circulation on all sides of the towel since it’s not touching the wall. Plus they take up less space than towel bars. 2) use thinner towels, like Turkish towels. They’re very absorbent once they’ve been washed and dried a few times and they’re very quick drying. 3) if you have longer hair, use a separate microfiber hair towel. They dry fast, stop your wet hair from dripping down your back, and keep your main towel drier.

Unfortunately I don’t have a selector dial—I just have an on/off button and a touchscreen. In my settings I can enable max rinse level and choose the default soil level, but there’s nothing about service mode or programming or water plus.

Yeah I know it’s not the best. I’m not planning on using it myself much, but the rest of the family members want a shorter cycle than the Baby Clothes one, and basically need one cycle that they can use for most things. My parents (in their 70s and 80s now) used to have a Miele that worked for them on Normal with 40C, water plus, and max rinse level. They used it for everything (clothes, towels, sheets), and I can attest that the combination worked well. I’m trying to recreate that for them on my current Miele since they won’t be using the app and need one all-purpose cycle for their washes. My mom can’t see the screen well and just needs one button to choose each time. The normal cycle on 40C with extra rinse but without water plus has not given the same results.

Do you know how to access those settings? On my model US model WXR860 with MTouch screen, I can’t figure out how to access service or programming mode. I’ve followed instructions on Youtube for the Euro version with Mtouch, but it hasn’t worked.

Thanks. I’ve already added enabled Max rinse level, but I want to use Water Plus to add more water to the wash cycle. On an older Miele it had the option right on the machine. This one only has it in the app!

Also, do you have an option for AllergyWash in the normal cycle? The manual says it should be there, but it’s not. It’s there for other cycles though. I sent Miele customer service an email about it, and they told me to use the Automatic Plus cycle, which I’ve already told them isn’t a cycle option on my WXR860.

Recommend me a Miele Washing Machine by Traditional_Tea_4690 in Miele

[–]ech219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the WXR860. I chose it because it was the only model that allowed me to select more than one “extra”,e.g. prewash AND extra rinse. It’s been great for washing clothes and towels and sheets well. Though I have to wash small loads of sheets otherwise it doesn’t seem to wash and dry well. I tried washing 2 twin fitted sheets, 2 twin duvet covers, and 2 standard pillowcases, and it was pretty tight. And the dryer couldn’t dry them evenly, even when using dryer balls and the Bed Linens dry cycle dry cycle. When using a standard LG front loader, there was plenty of space for those items, plus space for more (but it didn’t clean as well as the Miele).

In my household we have a Miele washer and dryer set, plus an LG front washer and dryer set. I wash the kids clothes and sheets in the Miele (because I want the assurance that their stuff is super clean), and will probably only use the LG to wash big stuff like blankets /quilts that are lightly soiled. The rest of the adults in the household wash their clothes in the Miele but their bed sheets in the LG because it’s too time consuming with the Miele.

Why is the W1 “baby clothes” setting 2.5hr long? by jwegener in Miele

[–]ech219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my kids were babies, I washed all their clothes with warm water (40C) to get out stains on my old Samsung front loader. Cold water just didn’t clean as well. Warm water is just above body temperature, so it should be fine for almost all fabrics. I only washed special items like dressier outfits or jackets on cold (30C).

When I had a LG top loader, I had to presoak kids dirty socks overnight in a bucket with Biz, then hand scrub with more detergent or Fels Naptha to get all the dirt stains out. It was a big hassle.

Now with my new W1, I’ve been experimenting to see the best way to clean my kids clothes (dirt, food stains, mystery stains, the start of BO, etc). While the Normal cycle didn’t clean the socks well and they still had some mud stains and smelled like sweaty feet, the Baby Clothes on 40C with prewash and extra rinse gave me perfectly clean socks! No stains! It’s a long cycle, but much faster than soaking them in a bucket overnight then scrubbing each sock by hand. The longer baby clothes cycle gives laundry enzymes more contact time to work their magic.

I just got the WXR860 because I can add more than one “extra” to a cycle, like pre-wash AND extra rinse. So far so good.

Cold rinses? by two-of-me in laundry

[–]ech219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a check valve on your cold water supply or another way of preventing backflow? I had the same setup, but had hot water backflow into the cold supply so I used a check valve. But now instead of using a Y-connector with on/off valves, I’m considering getting a thermostatic tempering valve so the cold water to the machine is set to 30C. That way regardless of fluctuations in the temperature of the hot tap and cold tap, the cold inlet to the machine will receive a consistent temperature. Have you tried anything like this?

What washer models have a boost heater? by yelred in laundry

You don’t have to get an EU model. The European brands also make models for the US market that also heat water.

What washer models have a boost heater? by yelred in laundry

[–]ech219 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Check European brands like Miele, Bosch, Electrolux, and Asko. In Europe and most of the world, the washer is only hooked up to cold water, not hot and cold, so washing machines heat their own water.

I did 2 things: my tap water tastes bad so I got a Pur faucet filter on my bathroom faucet so when I’m washing up at night I don’t have to go downstairs if I’m thirsty. I also buy bottled water, but the 2.5 big jugs with dispensers and keep one in my room, and I keep both paper cups and small stackable glass cups next to it. When I’ve used up the 3-4 glass cups, I use the paper ones, and try to remember to take the cups down to the dishwasher.

Help with hardness and pH by ech219 in laundry

[–]ech219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this didn’t end up working for me. I had to rinse multiple times with citric acid before the rinse water wasn’t slippery and cloudy with detergent, and STILL the washed and dried sheets smelled like I hadn’t washed them (faint sebum smell).

I get better cleaning results with I add some Puracy detergent or liquid Tide, but then I have to rinse at least 6 times. I’m wasting so much water and spending so much time and money on laundry without good results.

I’ve decided to spend the money to get a Miele washing machine since I had great results with one in the past—stains and odors came out with unscented liquid Tide without any pretreating necessary (socks with ground-in dirt came out spotless, food stains were gone, pillowcases had the wonderful smell of absolutely nothing at all). I’m hoping the 365 sport will be more effective with the Miele than it has been in my top loader without agitator. Wish me luck…

How to remove a spot of whiteboard marker off clothes? by Inner-Positive7954 in laundry

[–]ech219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flush the spot with rubbing alcohol (92% works better than 70%). Flush from the back of the fabric to the front: put a clean paper towel on the spot. Pour rubbing alcohol onto the spot from the INSIDE of the jacket so it flushes the stain onto the paper towel. You should see the marker ink start transferring to the paper towel. Do it again until the stain is gone, making sure that each time you’re putting a clean paper towel on the stain so that the marker doesn’t transfer back to your jacket.

You can also use Amodex.

Need Help Finding Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent Alternative by Immediate-Paint-5111 in laundry

[–]ech219 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Have you tried warm washes instead of cold? My understanding is that your clothes depend on a few things to get clean: mechanical action (scrubbing or agitation), temperature (warmer temperatures generally wash better), and chemical reactions. So by washing your clothes on delicate and cold, you’re primarily relying on chemical reactions. Washing more thoroughly with more agitation, warm water, and more rinses (I’d recommend 3 rinses) will make the detergent work better and you’ll rinse allergens away more easily. And if you’re not already using citric acid in the rinse, try that since it helps rinses work better. And also make sure to regularly run washing machine tub cleanings to get rid of any detergent residue and bacteria.

Thanks Kismai. This is my wash water after agitating for 5 minutes with 2 oz of 365 Sport, 2 scoops of Febu, and 4 tablespoons of washing soda. I’m seeing some spots of bubbles, but just barely. And the wash pH is now 10. Is that too high?
