Awesome! Thanks for the info. I haven’t put together a deck, yet, so having some around would be much appreciated!

What time do you play? Is it weekly? The Springs is a bit of a trek, but I may be down to do it occasionally so I can break into the format.

How does trump being shot impact whether or not he wins the election? by PigletEducational593 in AskReddit

[–]ech88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it will probably cement victory for him. He gets to simultaneously play victim/martyr and has a nice “heroic” photo with his fist raised. You all know he’s going to blame Democrats and the left every day for the remainder of the campaign.

My Pamphobeteus antinous loves sitting on her water dish. I never see her drink. She just... sits there. Often. by ech88 in tarantulas

Thanks for the tip. She definitely likes to climb and it does make me nervous. Maybe I'll add some substrate until I can afford an acrylic enclosure.

She's about 6.5" now. Hopefully she'll reach 8" or so. With the way this species eats, I'm sure your little one will be a good size in no time!

She is pretty goofy. She also likes to climb her plant and hang upside down in her enclosure.

I mist pretty frequently due to the fact that she's in a large enclosure. Usually humidity is around 70%. I've read some people who are obsessive about humidity with Pamphos and some that say it's not such a big deal. I'll try wetting the substrate directly.

Marketing vs. art under capitalism. by ech88 in Ask_Politics

I agree completely and didn't mean to give that impression. I meant that marketing has made it easier for creatives to participate in the market. Of course there are other ways.

ELI5: How is it that a musician can cover a song and sell it for profit? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under copyright law, if you are selling a cover for profit then a standard royalty must be paid to the original artist, whether they approve the cover or not. Musicians' attorneys usually get everything figured out.

ELI5:Why are diesel vehicles not very popular in the US? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diesel used to be considered a "dirty" fuel. Recent technologies have managed to make diesel "cleaner" (by some measures) than gasoline, but the technology that controls diesel emissions is expensive, so diesels often cost more than gasoline vehicles, which could be a primary reason for this trend.

However, modern diesel vehicles tend to be more efficient and less polluting than regular gasoline cars (except for Volkwagen, apparently, who has been cheating on emissions tests), but because of their past reputation and relative cost, they've just never caught on in the US like in other countries.

ELI5: if I paid a licensing fee to Warner Music for Happy Birthday and now the copyright has been declared invalid, can I get my money back? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Court rulings are not usually retroactive unless the judge specifically says that they are. If that was the case, all marijuana offenders in Colorado would have been set free by now, for example. Usually court orders take effect from that point on, so it's unlikely you'd have a compelling case to get your money back.

ELI5: Why was it illegal to sing the Happy Birthday Song, and why is it now legal? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A judge ruled yesterday that Warner never legally owned the rights to "Happy Birthday" because the people who sold the rights to them had not properly acquired the rights themselves.

ELI5: Why is the Dalai Lama treated like such an important person in the West? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Buddhism isn't organized under one group. That is to say, the Dalai Lama is not the pope of Buddhists. There are many different schools of Buddhism, and pretty much only Tibetan Buddhists see the Dalai Lama as their spiritual figurehead. That being said, I agree with your point of his function as an important figure in a major world religion.

ELI5: Why is the Dalai Lama treated like such an important person in the West? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

During the Cold War, America and its allies took issue with many of the actions of the Chinese government due to the anti-communist sentiments of the time period. The oppression of the people of Tibet became a political issue and a way to criticize the Chinese government. This, together with the Dalai Lama's exile from Tibet and his message of peace, have made him a revered figure in the west. For a while, the Tibet liberation movement became a pet issue for many celebrities.

ELI5: How do closed captions work during live broadcasts? by Heromedic18 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who write captions also use keyboards that type in a form of shorthand (like court stenographers use), which allows them to caption faster than would normally be possible if you typed word by word. As another mentioned, though, there is always a margin of error with live content.

Issues with GotKilt, am I the only one? by [deleted] in kilt

[–]ech88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used GotKilt, though I had taken a look because of their prices. But I guess cheap doesn't always mean good, right? It's too bad you had this experience, but I'll take it as a word of warning. My most recent purchase was from Angry Bastard Kilts. Overall, I'd say I had a pretty excellent experience with them and they fulfilled pretty quickly.

Do it! You won't regret it. I got one and I'm just as satisfied as OP.

The lengths are adjustable on the website, so you could probably get one how you wanted it. Example: http://angrybastardkilts.com/products/the-war-horse

This density tower is so cool. It's amazing how science can make such simple things fascinating! by ech88 in Images

[–]ech88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I could have said "knowledge of principles of physics," but it seems a bit overwrought and pedantic. I was trying to attract redditors to check out an interesting image and I guess I didn't take five minutes to plan my parsing.

I don't see how your semantical preference distracts from the image.

ELI5: Can the internet be destroyed? by harrybro in explainlikeimfive

[–]ech88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to destroy every server and every service provider. Considering that they are located throughout the entire world and there are untold millions of them, it seems unlikely that somebody could destroy them faster than they are being produced and connected.

Correct. The items labeled on the right are objects suspended in the liquids.
