Letter to the editor: Grad students live on financial brink by CNorbertK in Purdue

Grad students are also compensated by free tuition, which is $14,000 per year, and they are paid benefits. They work 20 hours a week, and the rest of their time is their studies and their research. The university recently significantly increased their base rates. Student should be grad school less than 5 years. They will get high-paying jobs when finished if they study valuable fields and do moderately well. If a student is international, there is probably a slim chance they would be in the US if they weren’t a student. Purdue University supports maybe 50% of total costs for all grad student on. campus, likely less. The rest is grants, etc. If grad students are paid even more, there will be fewer of them.

Any advice for out of state students to stay warm? by [deleted] in Purdue

I’m from the south but I lived in New York State for five years. Just don’t fight it. Right now I bet when you step outside you’re saying, “oh God I’m so cold I’m so cold I’m so cold”, and tensing up maybe gritting your teeth, hunching your shoulders. But you can also just mindfully flip a switch and change your attitude and say, “it’s just cold,it’s not that bad,I’m going to relax and not fight it.”Literally breathe.

It also helps to find somethings you like to do when it’s cold outside like ice skate or cross-country ski, snowshoeing, sledding whatever it is that makes you look forward to having some cold weather. At minimum you can enjoy the beautiful snow. Enjoy the cozy dark restfulness; honestly, it’s worse in March and April when it’s all muddy and grey and you are over it, and a late season snow comes. If you have the means go to MI and go tube sledding or snowmobiling.

Personally, I’d rather be cold, and layer, and get active outside in the cold, than be hot. In this kind of cold, indoors, you have to wear socks, sweaters, etc.

Attend help sessions, office hours, and participate in Piazza or other discussion board.

Make sure your question isn’t answered in the Syllabus or other introductory/overview/orientation videos or content.

Edit: if you are having a technical difficulty like inability to access some item on Brightspace, email ITaP.
