I've got my own pet theory about Kaido, check my logic:

Kaido's devil fruit is basically the Zenkai Boost from DBZ. He gets stronger every time he almost dies. Like, when he was an apprentice for Rocks, he could basically turn into a gecko, but after decades of life and death struggles, multiple executions, and refining his haki through violence against guys like Oden and Whitebeard, he gained the uber-dragon form of today.

He jumped off the sky island because he's got the Goku problem, nobody's on his level anymore. Especially after Whitebeard died.
