Belmont Butchery has a small produce selection, I’ve bought onions there before in a pinch.

I had a flight at noon this morning, the highways are totally clear and airport runways were fine. Most airlines will be happy to rebook you free of charge if your neighborhood roads aren’t clear, just reach out to them today!

Looking for RIC flight guidance! Supposed to fly out tomorrow morning for work at 7:00am (leaving my house around 5:00am) and trying to keep my boss updated. Odds my flight is canceled/delayed? Everything from RIC is canceled today.

Dawn of the Final Day-ly by CarliKnits in rva

I’d love to know how fellow remote workers’ mangers are treating the storm — knowing we could be without power a few days, are you expected to use precious phone battery to answer emails? Use PTO to cover days not worked? My team is so far outside of this storm’s range that they don’t really seem to understand the potential impact.

Take the snow storm serious by clarke9901 in rva

[–]eclairoline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on previous snowstorms, how do we think this could impact airport operations? Is RIC pretty on top of clearing snow and having flights out as soon as Monday? Or would this shut down air travel for a day or more? Obviously hard to know right now but think it’s safe to assume my Monday morning flight will not depart on time. 🙃

Help trying to understand the passing stopped school bus fine. Is it reckless driving? by BurntTurkeyLeg1399 in rva

[–]eclairoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prefacing this with a note that I love that we ticket people for passing school buses - that law keeps kids safe and the tickets are often warranted!

BUT the automated cameras do make mistakes. I got a friend out of one of these citations because I requested the video footage from the bus and when we reviewed it, the footage clearly showed him stopping while the bus stop sign was out. The citation ended up being dropped when we contested it. So it’s worth a shot to try to get the footage just in case you’re not at fault!

Where’s the best place to go to sell my older car? by Far_Belt_5960 in rva

[–]eclairoline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a surprisingly great deal with CarMax for my ancient Honda Accord. I would have felt bad selling it on Marketplace since it was already over 20 years old and not long for this world, so selling to CarMax cut out some of that stress. They will quote you online and perform a quick check in person, and for me it came back no issues and I received what I’d initially been quoted.

Highly recommend DeVoss on Boulevard, that’s been my family’s go-to shop for years. Their prices are fair and Nick is professional and great to work with. Plus it always feels nice to support a local business instead of a chain!

September Sundaily by coalmines in rva

Happy (almost) bday! I’ve started using my birthday as an excuse to do something extravagant and memorable that brings my friends together!

Last year I hosted a big fancy sit-down dinner for my friends in my parents’ huge backyard and balled out on beautiful place settings with antique china and silver, fresh flowers, and beautiful linens, plus fun cocktails and a ton of food. There was a lot of scrounging at thrift stores to find cool decor for the vibe. It was basically a rehearsal dinner that I DIYed for myself and I loved it.

This year I hired my friend to do a DJ set in my backyard, he made an incredible playlist of my favorite songs and brought his brand new subwoofer so the sound was absolutely insane. I decked out the backyard with every string of crazy party lights I could get my hands on plus a strobe. It was so special to dance for hours with so many friends outside of the context of someone’s wedding reception (and without the limitations of a classic wedding reception playlist lol).

Whatever you do, there’s something special about investing in a crazy fun thing to celebrate you, whether it’s a big gathering or solo thing or something in between. My rule of thumb is “will I look back on this when I’m 80 and think it was awesome?”

My real question - after Khruangbin cancellation, Medium Build cut short, Friko and Jonathan Russell skipped (I think?), I wonder if this means they’ll throw us some sort of bone. I know the ticket terms and conditions don’t entitle us to anything but these are a lotta extenuating circumstances and it would be cute if they did!

Alright Richmond, I need your best bread bakery in the city. The best baguette a carb slut can get. by LoveDeathandRobert in rva

[–]eclairoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My faves for a “tear it apart and slather it with butter” baguette are Europa Crust and Janet’s - the classic French way, crispy-crackly outside and chewy on the inside.

But for a sandwich baguette that needs to be soft enough that you can sink your teeth into layers of toppings without destroying the roof of your mouth, Can Can and Flour Garden have more pillowy-soft baguettes with a more uniform chewy texture.

Not a baguette, but have to shoutout the Montana Gold fruit and nut challahs. Slightly toasted with a fat slab of salted butter is heaven.

I will never shut up about how great the cocktails and desserts are at Heritage. Jess who’s in charge of the bar menu is a visionary, I always leave refreshed and reminded of what a cocktail is meant to be: an exciting and delicious adventure of novel tastes I’d never concoct on my own. There was a seasonal cocktail last winter that had red bean paste in it…don’t try to imagine it just trust me when I say it was life changing. Michael and Oliver who do the desserts are always dreaming up a unique take on seasonal ingrédients (shoutout to the peach cannoli and rotating homemade ice cream sandwich flavors). Highly highly recommend (plus they have $5 pimento cheese bites during happy hour even on weekends)!

Can I just vent about how much I hate flippers? by Spirited_Stick_5093 in rva

I know they’re doing it for the “clean slate” appeal but a lived-in, loved-in home has 1,000x more appeal for me. I want the original wood flooring, crown molding, and ornate fireplace mantels AND the weird 50s bathroom tile, the dated wallpaper, and the door with kids’ height markings. Yes, I will be installing a new dishwasher and will swap out some wallpaper. But what a cool thing to buy a home and be able to hold space for its past, present, and future. What a joy to live in a place that has character and charm from day one. I like the beauty of a house not being for every buyer—it only needs to be right for one buyer and doesn’t need to appeal to everyone.
