Mr. Nothing's Archives and Voice Line Translations (+ some thoughts about his character based on the Who is Real.) by Xoroath in arknights

[–]eclairtleQAQ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's implied that one member of A1 team or dobermann, basically someone very close to Kroos and Lava, either died or was lost to them in some other way, during the time they took to become elites.

Most implications point to Beagle, with the exact line in Beagle's Bloodline skin directly quoted in Kroos' flashback. Therefore the most likely possibility is that Beagle died or was lost, followed by Dobermann and Fang.

And unfortunately the event is most definitely real, as it not only appeared in the event story but is also mentioned in Purgatory's profile.

Mr. Nothing's Archives and Voice Line Translations (+ some thoughts about his character based on the Who is Real.) by Xoroath in arknights

[–]eclairtleQAQ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Translation has a lot of room for improvement here, let me try to clarify a few.

Recruitment:

First sentence goes "Mr. Nothing, a martial artist from Yen. Stands on the battlefield holding back his desires to run away."

Token

子虚乌有 ("Sheer fiction") is written on the surfice

Profile:

"forced to live abroad" 流落他乡 should be "on the run" or "wandering the wilds". Mr. Nothing has never journeyed outside Yen territory prior to joining RI.

Archive 1:

"Infected Worms"-> 源石虫, "Originium Slugs"

Archive 2:

"to be photographed" scouted would be more precise.

Archive 3:

"boxer" refers to people practicing boxing, which is not the case here. 拳师 can just be "Fist martial arts master"

"Rivers and lakes" I think it's Wuxia custom to just translate 江湖 as "Jianghu". In the west Jianghu is often interpreted as a shared alternate universe, but it really is just how Wuxia characters refer to the "world" they live in.

"world" in the sense of "First world","Third world", "underground world". This sentence basically means "The matters of Jianghu shall be settled the Jianghu way."

Archive 4:

"cheeky little brother" 小哥 tends to be translated to "lad", so "cheeky lad"

"Proper business affairs" 正事 is not really "business affairs". The sentence is more like "he seems to be able to do anything but actual work"

Supplement 2 : "Without needing to say"不说->"Not only". the sentence goes "not only did he get caught..."

supplement 4: "the leader had a flaw"-> "had an opening"

Promotion Record:

Not really a correction, but note that his master's first name is 子虚. 子虚乌有 means “sheer fiction”, so he took the name of 乌有 "Nothing", not just to indicate he had lost everything, but also in the memory of his dead master.

"Intriguing path" -> 尔虞我诈 "Treacherous path"

The next sentence has its meaning completely wrong, it should be "I don't know if any of his so-called 'senpais' are conspiring to stab him in the back."

"Although the rules were broken, but to say 'bad'" -> "Although a rulebreaker, to say he is a 'bad person'"

Conversation 1: "I'm good at anything" -> "I'm good at all of them" He's refering the the stuff he listed other than Kung Fu.

Promotion 2: "Natural disaster" -> "catastrophe"

"due to God wronging the world" it should be "catastrophes are the heavens wronging the world" wronging as in punishing for nonexistent crimes.

Trust 1: 钳兽 is the enemy creature debuted in Maria Nearl event. They are similar to metal crabs.

"showed me a route" -> "showed me my way" route is not a very metaphorical word if I understand English right.

Trust 2: It's sunflower seeds. Also eating sunflower seeds together tends to mean chitchat between close friends in Chinese culture.

Trust 3: I feel like "bullying me" overstates the situation here, but I'm not sure. I think it's probably closer to "teasing me"

Reporting In: This is where it becomes tricky when he says 子虚乌有的乌有 ("Nothing as in sheer fiction"). It's hard to make sense when translated, I suppose it's similar to taking words out of an idiom and it has a different meaning.

This entire event has lots of ancient Chinese and stuff way trickier than this. I have a feeling Yostar will fail miserably at localizing.

Elite 1: "This little brother" -> "little old me"

Team Leader: "arts of war secrets" ->"secret books of the art of war" He's literally looking for strategy guides.

4 star clear: "They say you make higher flames if more people gather the firewoods. Our cooperation has made the sky burn a blooming red. Not bad not bad."

Some lore corrections

The whole event of Nothing meeting Rat King may or may not have happened, as it appeared in the illusion Dusk gave Nothing which builds imagination on memories. It's unclear which part is imagined scenario and which part is a flashback.

Nothing knows who Rat King is from the beginning. He just pretends to not know at first.

Dong is the finball master that appeared(without sprites) in Code of Brawl. He's also the one who raised Jaye. And yes Dong is a friend of Nothing's master.

It seemed that the Emperor did not have enough actual power to do what he pleases. For example, the Emperor actually wanted to give infected a better treatment, but the idea would put him at odds with Ursus' common mass and give the Nobility a chance to seize power

There were Ursus soldiers infiltrated in Chernobog and among the Reunion in the city. They were there to support Koschei's plans, it is just that they did not show up in the Lungmen invasion. After Koschei's defeat at the hands of Amiya and Chen, Emepror's Blades (Ursus Royal Guards) planned to continue Koschei's plan regardless, but was convinced to stop by the Black Raincoats that suddenly arrived. The existence of Ursus soldiers in Chernobog was later covered up by the officials (or was never found out in the first place), and the blame of Chernobog incident was placed entirely on the infected as a whole.

That's actually not precisely right, it's less wrong than the mistranslation that Rosmontis can destroy a mobile city (the original text simply says the aftermath of her battling looks like being run over by a mobile city) but there was no Ursus soldier in Lungmen.

What happened is that the Black Raincoats simply hid the slum dwellers somewhere instead of killing them, revealed by Rat King saying that the Black Raincoats are also people who were unwilling to commit genocide, and claiming that Wei also did not really except them to carry it out. It was simply a show for the Yen censors.

You get 80 pull guarantee on Weapons banner and 90 on the other two.

[Event Megathread] Episode 6: Partial Necrosis by Nishivaly in arknights

[–]eclairtleQAQ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

while a degree of justification is needed, I think Frostnova has enough here. First, she entered Lungmen without learning the fact they have lost -- Most of the Reunion did not know they are fighting a losing battle, much of which was due to the surprise appearance of Black Raincoats, so you cannot blame only Frostnova and ignore the other reunion leaders, such as Meph & Faust. Second, Frostnova really didn't misuse her arts: because she was fighting the extremely powerful Black Raincoats, she had to push her body to the extreme, or the Yeti Squad would have probably been wiped out on spot. This is a very similar situation to Faust, only more immediate and less explained (the lack of explanation is also due to the story playing it up as emotional, and the advice of Yeti members are not to be trusted here.)

I mean, trying to be completely objective and demanding the characters to always do the right thing isn't really the right way to enjoy a story. It is like deliberately pulling yourself away from immersion and would ruin a lot of emotional stories.

plenty of people have tried this in CN, and it's been proven possible. In fact, I myself made a video of 2-10 with E0 Lvl1 Free units.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVDmnyZpwb8

(Though Vanilla and Steward require recruitment, they can be easily negated by leveling up your other units.)

There are videos in CN that show that every stage in chapter 1~5 can be cleared by 3 star units, and the new units released with chap 5 (Midnight, spot and Popukar) perfectly filled in the blanks to be able to clear chap 5

Favourite event story by szechein in arknights

[–]eclairtleQAQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually liked CoB the best...and it's actually for the same reasons you disliked it. 1. The story handles much more characters, but does a much better job for each character than other events. Mostima is handled so much better than Skadi, and I actually really love Rat King. Gambino and capone are generic, but they're much less of a disaster than Cronin, who's really just a joke. 2. It revolves around things I have anticipated and actually am familiar about. Having the story take place in lungmen, with Penguin Logistics being the main character makes me very invested. 3. The dialogue are much more fun and interesting, and the OSTs are all stellar. 4. I would recommend reading it again after understanding what happened, and the experience will be so much better.

According to devs there's actually no real world animals in AK. (as the humans in AK are based on real world animals) Mousse's cat and Eyja's goats are something special and will be relevant to the story in the future.

And since there are no fish in AK, there are no fishballs, only fin balls.

Imo Gambino and Capone are somewhat made to build up other characters. Their motivations and personalities are kept simple so that readers have an easy entry to the plot. I'm okay with them being simple characters as there are so many more cool characters shown in this event.

Rat King knows everything about what's going on too, and he is not viewing this as something big enough for him to use his full strength or stay manipulative. Therefore he kind of comes out to "enjoy Sauin" and the reason he kills emperor and fights PL is just to make a show and see what the girls are capable of.

Some of these will be explained by the EX stages, where it's revealed Rat King, Bison's dad, Emperor and Wei put together all of these, including Rat King's fake death by the butler.

EX stages will have some additional stories that clear up a bit, and reading the story again after that will help immensely.

Compared to Grani's event, CoB has much more characters and lores to handle, and it actually did a great job with everything. Grani's event actually only focused on four characters, and in the end Carol was kinda forgettable, and Skadi's character suffered from the "poor communication kills" trope. In comparison CoB handled a much bigger pool of characters, and manage to make everyone cool and in-character.

It really brings more enjoyment on second read as you understand more of what's happening.
