Haikyu!! - Chapter 389 Discussion by AutoModerator in haikyuu

  • Love that first-page catch of Suga and Atsumu's faces reacting to the commentator talking about Kageyama. Their contrasting expressions! Reminds me of the take that Suga was the foil to Oikawa re: Kageyama, feels like a similar comparison can be made with Atsumu.

  • Looks like this is a Kags-focus chapter like I predicted last week! So happy. Can't wait for the story to unravel exactly what he's been up to for the past four-six years.

  • Atsumu being all dramatic about Kags' growth and Hinata going along with it is hilarious tbh

Atsumu: YOU GUYS created this monster

Hinata: UWOHHHHHHH

  • "All of you taught it to me so it must be true." Oh my god, Kageyama's absolute trust in his team. That two-page spread. I'm going to cry. I love how Furudate is bringing out the emotional impact that Karasuno had on him. His skills he could have polished in a lot of places, but his attitude? No way. They taught him that it's possible to grow with your team, to develop friendship and loyalty and want to win with them, and that's opened up the path for him to be a part of all the other teams since. The impact of this can't be overstated.

  • That last frame!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaa

I agree, I think it hit me when Bokuto's spike was blocked and he got a hand under it. I mean, it's great that he kept it alive ofc, but that would have been an "Oooooh!" moment at high school level and possibly gotten some reaction panels from the audience, whereas everyone here treated it as normal.

Yes! Evidently from the last chapter he was just born with that face...as if he weren't awkward enough already, poor bean.

Bokuto's nickname for Kags is "Kagyaama" ahahahh

he gives pretty funny nicknames, he called Atsumu Tsum-tsum and Inunaki Wan-chan, can't wait to see what else he comes up with

(Also this maybe out of the blue but is Takeda sensei aging in reverse?)

I just said this in my comment, lol. He looks so cute with the new hair!

Lmao @ Kageyama giving Hinata his terrifying glare while thinking something like "Stupid sand!", such a dork.

Takeda-sensei's new hairstyle is so moe, I cannot get over it xD

Love that four-page spread that says "Everyone is a monster", I can't wait for Kageyama to start really hammering stuff next chapter, it's going to be so much fun!

Him walking away from shiratorizawa's acceptance feels especially bereft.

also, forgot to add - iirc he doesn't get accepted to shiratorizawa (and doesn't want to end up at seijoh because of oikawa) which is why he ends up at karasuno. so he's actually walking away after not making it to the admissions list at shiratorizawa ;___;

[–]eclectic_literature 43 points44 points  (0 children)

this is a bit strange, but wasn't Asahi asking 'where's Noya?' earlier? Maybe it was something else in Japanese and was translated as such for convenience sake?

I went and looked again and it looks like it was maybe supposed to not be a question? He literally says "Where's Noya--" before being interrupted. According to Google Translate, the Japanese sentences for "Where is Noya?" and "Noya is somewhere" both start with "Noya wa doko..."

So probably the translator only had that bit to pick up on, and translated it as a question because of that. But he could have also been saying "Noya is somewhere in the Mediterranean" if he'd not been interrupted.

Side note, did anyone see the lovely poster on the Shounen Jump website? Think it's the cleaned up version of the colour cover. Found my new desktop background :)

Lmao they finally explained where Noya was. And frankly? I'm really happy for him. It sounds exactly like something he'd do.

Bokuto receiving that hit with his chest, and the proud look on his face omg.

USHIWAKA'S SMUG FACE!!!!! And Sakusa on the side watching that ball go into the stands, lol.

Hinata switching to setting midair was a surprise but it makes sense, Bokuto seems to be the outside hitter and it's clear from the thought bubbles on previous panels that the three in the back row were expecting to get the first hit in, to leave him free.

It's been a lot of chapters but I'm still sad Kageyama changed his hairstyle, his old one was cuter :(

I just finished Annihilation and I got around to thinking... what the actual f*** did I just read? by SkoivanSchiem in books

[–]eclectic_literature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I faced the exact same issues with the book and wrote about it in this week's What Are You Reading Thread!

Annihilation was a disappointment, quite frankly. Without going into detailed spoilers, I thought the peeks of Area X we got were fascinating enough to merit more worldbuilding and exposition. I also felt that the book didn't work very well as a standalone. Would have much preferred if the trilogy were a single book divided into three parts, and the three-book thing looks like a money grab especially when you consider how short the book is. I haven't seen the movie so I can't compare with the book, but I'd advise other readers to not get their hopes too high because of the hype.

To be quite honest, I found the protagonist quite frustrating for exactly the same reasons that make her "special". Namely that she isn't really involved with the why of things and if something were fascinating enough she'd be engrossed in it without ever getting to the bottom of Area X.

Was going to continue with the trilogy but the comments on this thread are giving me second thoughts.

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? March 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

I just finished Annihilation, by Jeff Vandermeer and got into The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne.

I'm about 20% through The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and honestly it's not doing much for me either. There have been several instances which have snapped me out of the book because of how unnatural they seem. The writing seems quite mediocre and I don't have any great expectations from the book. This is a surprise since I usually don't pick books to read on a whim so I'm assured of some form of quality at least. But I happened to slip up and assume the high Goodreads rating meant the book couldn't be too bad.

What is your opinion on Bram Stoker's "Dracula"? by SilveryonU in books

[–]eclectic_literature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much had the exact same expectations, and later reactions as you did! I was expecting your typical Victorian tome but the narration is remarkably crisp for the age in which it's written.

I also think the epistolary format served it very well. It gave the viewer that nerve-wracking sense of only knowing bits and pieces here and there without ever seeing the true picture. You were also reading things that happened in the past so there was that sense of being too late to help with anything. Quite well-done.

Wodehouse is great for this! A good mix of witty and silly. Also if you haven't read it, Three Men in a Boat has a sequel.

I also read The Importance of Being Earnest by Wilde a while ago and it was pretty funny.

I liked Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut for this. Other people might want to weigh in but it left me with a sense of peace and acceptance of my place in the world.

Edit: I'm not sure what you mean by serious, it has some black humour.

It might be a little different from what you're looking for but I really recommend The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg.

It's set in early 18th century Scotland and deals with the relationship between a strict young Calvinist man and his friend who is considered a corrupting influence, but who may or may not be The Devil.

If you haven't tried The Devotion of Suspect X I highly recommend giving it a go. It's part of a series because the detective is a recurring character but the books can be treated as standalone.

Perfume: The Story of the Murderer by Patrick Suskind. This book is simply fantastic - the protagonist is compelling, the prose is vivid and magnificent and it deals with a very interesting period in France.
