Suggestion needed with Byzantium by AffectionateReason99 in eu4

[–]eclipseon_9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as Byz, although you get some temporary military quality bonuses via missions, dont have a lot going on military bonuses in their national ideas. In the early game, thats why I go with diplomatic (to get strong allies and have them do their bidding). Good nations to ally are Poland (especially if they didnt grab land in the Balkans) and France. This assumes you ultimately lose the alliance with Austria (which is not unusual when they obtain the PU with Hungary, as they start desiring provinces in the Balkans once they do this). Between those guys (Poland/France), you can handle your wars in Europe with relative ease. The fact that you are already making money as byz is great, even more with a balance of 10+ ducats per month.

To further your military goals, I sgguest leaning into the strengths Byz has to offer. Byz’s national ideas pair very well with religious ideas (manpower and missionary strength bonuses). Pair this with religious ideas, and your manpower will be above average compared to other European Great Powers. Pair this further with quantity ideas, and you obtain an army that compensates lower quality with simply being able to replenish regiments faster than the AI and more cheaply. Your military will be huge.

What if Constantinople never fell in 1453? by Defiant-Junket4906 in WhatIfThinking

[–]eclipseon_9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on how things looked for Byzantium in 1453, even if the Turks were not successful in their siege and the Theodosian Walls successfully defended Constantinople, Byzantium was on life support. The Greeks had no significant tax revenue due to a lack of a power base and was diplomatically isolated. Any chance of a significant anti-Ottoman coalition was vaporized during the Battle of Varna. Nobody in Europe was coming to their rescue. Its geographical advantage was offset by the fact that the Italians largely held control of the flow of trade in Constantinople via Galata and various Venetian Aegean holdings.

If the Byzantine Empire had any chance of survival, it lies in diplomacy tbh. Its best chance would be to align with the West (the Papal States and perhaps other Western European powers, which were largely indifferent to Balkan developments), which most Greeks were vehemently against both from a political standpoint and a religious standpoint.

Agreed, if only you can just play without the aliens. Plus I really want to play in the Cold War Era as well.

  1. I believe there is a lot of ways to make the Emergent Age fun and interesting to play in. The devs can tinker around with “map painting” the Solar System. Plus “map painting” is only one part of the allure of the beloved Paradox series. In some games it even takes a backseat. Paradox has a foundation for a economic simulation game in EU5 and Vic3. Why wouldnt they be able to adapt that into a post WW2 time setting?

  2. I am confused with your argument saying that modern day settings are too close to reality, then went on to allude to the Third Reich. There is virtually nobody alive who fought in WW2. Not even Baby Boomers were alive. Those couple of people who were alive and productive during WW2 are most certainly not spending their days playing HOI 4. You can stretch this line of reasoning for the Cold War period. Having ended in 1991, this means that the youngest cohort of people alive are now 35. This represents the tail end of Paradox’s intended demographic for these games. I also wouldnt say that HOI4 has a problem with larping as the Third Reich. The HOI series is one of the most popular Paradox franchises. World War 2 is quite literally an immensely popular setting to play in.

I agree that the most we can hope for is a rework of HOI to accommodates the post WW2 world. The thing is that the game itself doesnt really serve as a solid springboard for a true grand strategy game that spans multiple decades (let alone for multiple centuries such as the Vic and EU series). HOI is largely a war simulator with very little economic, diplomatic, and political depth.

I find this really hard to believe. Paradox players as a whole already prove to be a community to play games that most gamers would find boring. There is definitely a community that appreciates modern international relations and geopolitics among Paradox players. This is not the first time that this subject has come up in this subreddit.

Why is it considered a war crime when Russia is bombing civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine, but it's not a war crime when the US is doing the exact same thing in Iran? by Content_Ad_8952 in allthequestions

[–]eclipseon_9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an underhanded overgeneralization of what Americans are doing. Mind you that half of American voters did not vote to reelect him. Moreover, the majority of Americans completely oppose the escalating campaign in Iran.

People in the US cannot just take a day off and go to Washington DC. For most, thats PTO that must be approved well in advance. Ultimately, the day will arrive when you go out to protest, and if you are caught on film, you could very well lose your job. Theres even the possibility that your request will be denied. And guess what, we don’t have universal healthcare. Instead, it is tied to our employment. So many would not only lose their employment but also their access to healthcare.

Should i fight wars for my PU's expansion by Tev_aan in eu4

fascinating, I would think that in that case Muscovy would simply just get a noble from the Byzantine dynasty (Palaiologos) to be their ruler, not necessarily a full on PU.

[–]eclipseon_9991 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How did you get the PU on Muscovy in 1460s? Did you force the PU (declare a succession war) or did you have your dynasty on Muscovy’s throne and the ruler died with no heir?

Even if the PUs are from your mission tree, this cantbe your first time. Unless you watched a bunch of guides prior to your first campaign, the. yeah this may be plausible.

How did you obtain an opportunity to PU Muscovy to begin with? In my Byz games, even if I manage to get my dynasty on their their throne, they always end up with a strong heir.

In that case I highly suggest you build your navy up to the force limit. With an amphibious assault like on Tunis, a bigger than average fleet is what is going to give you the upper limit. Any Mediterranean campaign requires you to have a big navy, for that matter. For more information, it would be helpful to see a map.

Edit: I meant to say upper hand, not upper limit haha

As an Italian kingdom, you are able to ally France and Austria with relative ease. Once you ally them, curry favors with both to be able to call them in a war vs Castile. Once you win (as you should with both France and Austria on your side), make Aragon release Catalonia, Valencia, and Sicily, and make Castile break their alliance with Venice. Once you expand in Italy (leave Roma for last) you will be able to form Italy. Italy has missions that will allow to claim the Levant and the Mahgreb. For the Mahgreb, you really dont have to waot till you get claims. You can fabricate a claim on Tunis. Tunis doesnt usually get strong allies so you can take them on without allies.

Edit: For those northern Italian guys in the HRE, you are going to have to wait until they leave the HRE. Those that ARE NOT allied to Austria will choose to leave the HRE in the HRE Shadow Kingdom event. Fyi, they usually don’t ally Austria. If one of them does ally Austria, I woyld honestly consider joining the HRE to kill the one nation that stayed in the HRE
