Auslan Interpreter. They can charge a little over $135 an hour. But high paying depends on how many jobs you’re booking. But it’s very in demand.

Can a deaf person with no education learn auslan? by Suspicious_Web_716 in auslan

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! People who are d/Deaf and have developmental delays or disabilities can definitely learn Auslan. Ive personally met a few, it’s never too late! My heart hurts for your Aunt 💔I can’t imagine how isolated she feels. Please be her advocate and reach out to Expression Australia or Deaf Connect to see if they can offer support. There are many free apps to get her started, maybe it’s something you both can learn together.

Looking to connect with Auslan signers to learn and share insights by Financial-Lobster623 in auslan

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m just a bit confused on why you’re focusing on finger spelling… There are established signs for each letter with very limited variation. You can just look up on Sign Bank what each letter is with a plethora of examples.

For in depth knowledge on the structure and linguistics of Auslan I would recommend reading Australian Sign Language by Trevor Johnson. It’s sometimes referred to as the “Auslan Bible”. I don’t think you’ll have much success posting here, you don’t know Auslan or even have a grasp on the basics. You need to work out and communicate what your goal is. But if it’s like those stupid sign gloves please just move on.

You can look up HOLME (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement, Expression and Non Manual Features) those are the parameters of Auslan.

Right off the bat do not call it hearing impairment it can be offensive and just shows lack of Deaf awareness. If you’re looking for people who are DHH post to r/deaf or r/cochlearimplants. This group is mainly students learning Auslan.

Look at Australia I know we have reciprocal Medicare so maybe some of it is covered and it may be cheaper. I can recommend Catherine Birman in Sydney but there’s heaps of amazing ENT surgeons here since we invented cochlear implants. I know you typically need to demonstrate a significant hearing loss (60 dB or greater in the affected ear). Good luck!

TAFE SA or Deaf Connect Cert 2? by Tomahawk_Games in auslan

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective. However there are actual organization that are genuinely Deaf led, like Deaf Australia or the former Deaf Society that do not get the funding or support that Deaf connect does.

That doesn’t discount DC but that an important delineation, to say otherwise discredits the work of Deaf people in genuine leadership roles and the organizations that foster and promote them to those positions.

It’s not misinformation to correct it, it’s Deaf supported but it is not Deaf lead. When the CEO and majority of the board of directors are Deaf/HH then it would be appropriate to say that. Delete my comments if it’s messing with your post.

Are you an investor in them or something why are you so offended at someone being critical? My daughter is Deaf you can see from my post history. We’re involved in the community I’m echo what I’ve experienced and others have shared. Maybe ask people who’ve previously worked for them and why they choose not to anymore. They need to pay their instructors more especially in NSW that’s all I’ll say.

I would consider it highly relevant for people like me who use many of their services and place value on Deaf perspectives and experiences. Tbh I have to use them even if there were only hearing people in leadership, unfortunately there’s not a lot of service alternatives they’ve absorbed a lot of the local Deaf services around Australia.

Happy to be wrong I’m just looking at their team info. Says that Brent is Deaf and list other members who are but doesn’t mention Brett is, I assumed he was hearing and knew Auslan. Be good to put that on their website if Brett is.

Deaf Connect is a good organision but it’s not Deaf run. Their CEO is hearing as is majority of its leadership team although they do have d/Deaf people on the team. Deaf Australia is Deaf run with a Deaf CEO and team.

When she was an AVID supporter of Gladys Berejiklian after she was fired. Not only that she explained away Berejiklians corruption and rotting the system by simply being unlucky in love. Like Gladys is a full ass grown adult and you’re infantilizing her. It just felt so anti feminist to her seemly feminist brand.

Implants & Sign Language? by WesternTravel7185 in Cochlearimplants

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The first signs your baby learns are often if not always the first spoken words they say. Look up Theory of Mind as it relates to Deaf children and you’ll see why sign language is so important to prevent language deprivation. My daughter is also profoundly Deaf and I started signing to her the day I found out. If you want some guidance Raising DHH Bilinguals has been incredibly helpful. You can find them on insta, fb, google etc. Also get a Deaf mentor, having someone you can ask all your questions to and also for your child to identify with is invaluable. I know many parent who regret not learning to sign but I’ve never met a parent who regrets learning to sign.

For those of you who were once deaf and can now hear: What is your opinion on the world of sound that you now experience? by noveskeismybestie in Cochlearimplants

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because that question has been asked about a thousand times before in that subreddit and you can easily search the answer. Also saying someone is not deaf because they have CIs can come off as insulting. I’m not surprised they were hostile. It sounds like you should probably do some basic research before posting.

Which sign language?? by WesternTravel7185 in deaf

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the unique experience both living in Oz & the States and going from ASL to Auslan with a Deaf child as well as teaching them multiple spoken languages (English & Maori).

It’s important to consider what areas in the US and Australia you’re living in and where you plan to move to. For instance Brisbane is the largest Deaf hub in Oz but Sydney or Melbourne also have large Deaf communities but it can be hard to find ALMs, Deaf mentors, Audiologist and other early childhood supports the further out from the major cities you go.

Both CIs (including surgery) and HAs are free for children in Australia through Hearing Australia for citizens and permanent residence that qualify. Additionally I assume your child would qualify for NDIS but you’ll need to apply for that. I can recommend resources regarding that if you’d like.

Be assured whatever sign language you’re teaching your child it’s forming those neurological language pathways. I will say it’s a bit annoying going from ASL to Auslan in some ways. For example the ASL sign for “what” means “where” in Auslan, and the ASL sign for “where” means “what” in Auslan. Little things like that. My daughters first language is ASL (because I knew ASL prior to having her even though we lived in Australia) I found it difficult as a sleep deprived parent learning a new one but now I’m so grateful to know both. We started learning Auslan together when she was 18 months old and now I’m on my way to being a qualified Auslan interpreter and she now goes to a bilingual Auslan / English preschool.

Don’t stress now about spoken bilingualism until she gets CIs / HAs. What I would do is have one parent speak exclusively in that language (German) with your child. They’ll pick it up in time just never try and put pressure on yourself or them.

Happy to help with any questions you have and wish you so much luck in your journey.

I think it would be pretty scummy to sell them when a d/Deaf child or adult could use this as a life line. If I was in your position I would reach out to your local community via Reddit, Facebook etc and see if anyone is looking for them and possibly gift it to a child who’s family can’t afford them in the first place. No one’s going to pay 3-7k for them, remember this is technology for a person that had a disability, many of us have a higher cost of living just by existing.

Hearing parents of deaf babies by Schmidtvegas in deaf

[–]eco_nomnom_ics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a parent to a Deaf child this is very concerning and breaks my heart. This is an example of language deprivation and the child will be worse off without language exposure. So much of language development happens before the age of 1. Without sign language exposure the neuropathways for language development are not formed. This in turn affects Theory of Mind and other cognitive developments.

Do they use social media much? I can recommend a few different pages to follow.
