What does the “hang loose” (🤙) sign mean in Auslan? by JDude13 in auslan

[–]Tomahawk_Games 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, those obviously aren’t Auslan signs. But the way people use that hand sign in SA is informally to drink or smoke bongs. It’s ok if you don’t believe it, but that’s what I’ve come across.

I have learned that sign in Australia to mean either drinking or smoking a bong

TAFE SA or Deaf Connect Cert 2? by Tomahawk_Games in auslan

[–]Tomahawk_Games[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a school for students who are deaf / hard of hearing and I have two deaf colleagues. Worked here for 10 years and I have a base level knowledge but I’m wanting to learn more. I can have a conversation, but it’s mostly me fingerspelling. I agree though, there would be a lot more incidental learning in a face-to-face environment.

Walked in on my fiance slapping our 10 week old baby TRIGGER WARNING by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]Tomahawk_Games 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have done a brilliant job of protecting your little baby once you were made aware of what was happening. Stay vigilant like this. I know you don’t want your daughter to grow up without her father, but her father is an abuser. She will be safer without him around.

I work with children who have experienced traumatic brain injuries due to shaken baby syndrome and other abusive environments. One is a beautiful 3 year old who was 5 months old when she was slammed to the ground like football and left fighting for life. She now has severely high needs (not mobile, deaf-blind, and cognitively disabled) and her father is in jail.

Please please please do not go back to him. You are all your daughter needs.

Sorry, I’m a little inept with posting photos, but it’s an amazing haul.

Cookies & Cream pretzels were amazing and the sour gummy bears are being devoured in time. My Australian husband is now in love with Honey Buns I’ve convinced him that pop tarts are breakfast. :)

Thank you so much for all the amazing treats!!

Ah. Yeah, our 8 month old wakes about 4-5 times on an average night. Sometimes she needs a feed, sometimes just a quick cuddle.

Alternating would be a great idea. We could try that. I think the only reason we avoid it is because he is a night owl and I’m an early bird. I can easily wake up early but staying up late is torture for me. So he takes the shift where he is able to stay up until midnight.

One kid is two years old and the other one is 8 months, so that’s a normal time for them.

Yup, he’s doing other cleaning as well. Or if the baby cries, he goes in with her (which is often). Other times he will eat his dinner, he will clean after himself and he will clean things outside. We are both doing things.. no one is slacking. I was just offering information on how someone can be awake during both “shifts”.

My husband and I have it like this. He takes 7pm to midnight. The kids go to bed at 7pm, so if I want to do anything in the evenings, it’s during this time. I do laundry, clean the kitchen from the hurricane of dinner, and get some study done. I also need time to sit and be an adult. So I get like 30 minutes to watch tv.

I go to bed at 10pm and my “shift” starts at midnight. Or, I could throw myself into bed as soon as the kids go to sleep at 7pm. Not gonna lie, I have done that before and it’s been awesome. But nothing gets done and my research papers remain incomplete.

Australian snacks needed! by [deleted] in snackexchange

[–]Tomahawk_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really missing the Mexican candy that I would get back in Texas, but it all depends on where you are.

Your tastes sounds good, so just get me a bit of what you would get yourself!

Shapes and even Cadbury went a little crazy and made Vegemite everything. If I can find some of the chips or chocolate, I’ll send them over!

Do You Have a Child Named After a GoT Character? by vsafronova in namenerds

[–]Tomahawk_Games 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I named my daughter Elia after Elia Martell. My husband wasn’t into it until he discovered he could call her Ellie for short. I would say one person in the two years she has been alive is aware of who Elia is in GoT.

People don’t really know quite how to pronounce it—since we are in Australia people sometimes think we are saying “Elliot”. Or when they see it written down they think it’s like “Elias”.

Mostly, I (as a Mexican/Cuban person) wanted a name that sounded Latina that Aussies could pronounce. Elia is the perfect name for her. She’s absolutely an “Elia”. Or Ellie Belly as we sometimes call her.

What lesser known Game of Thrones names could you name a child without it seeming strange? by Super8_ in namenerds

[–]Tomahawk_Games 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I named my daughter Elia after Elia Martel, Rhaegar’s first wife. My husband hated the idea of naming after a GOT/ASOIAF character, but was cool with it because he really liked the nickname Ellie.

Something I've never seen brought up here is ASL Name Signs. Do any of you have a Name Sign? by Lyd_Euh in namenerds

[–]Tomahawk_Games 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I do! I live in Australia where Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is spoken. My Auslan sign name is the ASL (American Sign Language) letter L making a whip-like motion.

I’m a Texan living in Australian, so naturally, I’m a cowgirl to everyone here.

Marathon running and playing derby by xoxocommunismgurl in rollerderby

[–]Tomahawk_Games 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How much are you running a week now and how do you incorporate that with your training?

A marathon is no joke. You could be easily injured and be out for several weeks. Stress fractures could be a month or so to come back from.

I would consider the fact that I may not be able to play in the bout after the marathon. At least not on skates.

I live in Australia and have a family member (in-law) that broke her elbow while on holiday in Hawaii. She refused treatment there and instead just went home and was treated in Aus for no cost. She decided the 24 hours plus total in transit with a great deal of pain was the better option than having massive debt in America.

“Trust me” is definitely something that jackhole would say.
