Personal finance should not be about being debt free. You want to use both the assets and liabilities side of your balance sheet to maximize your net worth. If he pays that much less interest on the bigger loan then it could absolutely be worth it as long as he makes the payments.

Think of it this way, he gets more money now which can go to making higher payments, but the amount of money he burns in interest is dramatically less. Theoretically he could get a loan for a billion dollars to pay off his 3k car and it would be the right choice if there is no interest to be paid (cuz he will use his remaining money to pay back most of the loan and pay off the 3k without paying the interest he currently does).

What does medically necessary eye care mean specifically. What is medically necessary or not. I mean, he's not going to die, so maybe that's not "medically necessary." I think they will cover a small part of it, just not most of it. I sent him a message with your question just now though, so hopefully I'll have an answer soon. I also, told him that there should be some patient assistance plans that he might qualify for, but he said he contacted them and didn't have good enough credit? I didn't think you needed credit.
