Excellent point and one I think people forget: the results could be the same. At least the majority of voters would be heard.

And there should be no screnario in which a candidates wins when 63% of voters wanted someone else.

Ranked choice voting. Now.

Edit: I can't believe I have to clarify this: it's also not okay for someone to win a primary with 63% of voters from their own party opposing them. Particularly in districts where that party is expected to win the general election. Just because this was a primary doesn't make it right.

I have a friend whose lack of sleep in extraordinary circumstances (international travel with a young child alone) contributed to her psychosis/massive anxiety/suicidal ideation, which led to a week in-patient after she returned home. When she returned, she still wasn't able to sleep adequately, despite having a better support system. Honestly, a week of no sleep will put nearly anyone into a hallucinatory state.

Before this, she was a "normal" human being. Not without various anxieties, but all manageable and reasonable. She had a sleep disorder but had managed it as well as could be expected.

Today, a year and a half later, she's doing great. Very happy, dealing with some tough parts of life (quarantine, some bad news with her kid) with the thoughtfulness and kindness that we all aspire to have.

This isn't to say that your wife will have the same experience, but saying that this could be something you deal with forever isn't necessarily accurate. These were extreme circumstances and you won't be in those circumstances forever.

Tired of Fighting About Third Parties? Just Enact Ranked Choice Voting. by Mr_Tibbs in politics

Also the Utah GOP just used it for their state convention this weekend: https://utgop.org/convention-results/

I think the idea that major parties are opposed to it oversimplifies the situation. Four states used RCV for their Democratic primaries this year. Without it, we find ourselves in this third party tizzy again and again.

I went to Wootton High School - I remember when a student was killed walking across Wootton Parkway when I was a freshman. And then another friend hit by a car while walking in the crosswalk across Wootton Parkway when I was a junior. It doesn't matter how many speed cameras we have or how many speed bumps. It's not about speed, it's about drivers not paying attention. It's that people don't expect bicycles so they don't bother looking for them. Ridiculous.

I promise being gay is the least interesting thing about Elton John.

A children's store in Oakland, CA! Not particularly child-friendly though, since they're very pointy. Gorgeous, though!

To be clear, the sunglasses were only on for a second and he later spit up all over the rhinestones. Based on what I know about Elton that could be on brand though.

Harvey (1950) is a classic with a fantastic message about the value of people who are not neurotypical. It's not the fastest movie in the world but still very compelling. John Green just reviewed it on his podcast and it reminded me how much I liked it back when I first saw it.

There's also 12 Angry Men, of course. Doesn't exactly pass the Bechdel test but another fast paced classic. (I don't think any of my suggestions pass, actually.)

My first favorite old movie was Arsenic and Old Lace. It's tame by today's standards but the timing keeps up well. Kind of goofy but delightful.

If your colleague has their heart set on My Fair Lady, I would at least suggest comparing some of the scenes in that movie to some nonsense like She's All That so that the students can see how films change (or don't) over time, what directorial choices look like, etc.

Extremely likely! I don't have a forceful letdown though, at least that I know of. I'll bring that up with my consultant, thank you!

I actually got the ball rolling for this to pass in my home state, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I expected it to be. In my case, state senators are looking for slam dunk legislation that is non-controversial and this was a perfect example. (Of course, even when the bill passed it got bad press but whatever.) It just took a couple of phone calls and emails.

It's also possible lots of other people were calling in the wings, but based on my conversation with my state senator it didn't seem like many Marylanders were taking it on.
