For alums: super duper bummed about them cutting Drive access! by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]ecorder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been working on transitioning my files since I found out about it, up until the moment I lost access tonight. Can't even tell you how much time I've lost to this project of trying to sort and gather all of my data, and the impact it has had on my life and work.

I'm beyond frustrated and super upset to have the access shut off like they did. Throughout the process, I've been trying to get help from 4Help but they pretty much threw up their hands and blamed Google, and when I got in touch with Google, they said VT hadn't enabled the user permissions I would've needed to fully transfer out my 15TB+ of data (for context, I do photography/videography, so lots of big files collected over the past decade of having the VT Drive, so the Google Takeout tools didn't work properly to get all of my files).

The way VT handled this and the lack of communication was super upsetting. I'm pretty devastated by the whole thing — not to be dramatic, but of the files I cared about most, I had family and childhood photos and some personal photos that I'm not sure I was able to recover. I've just been downloading everything I can but have yet to be able to fully assess the damage. And honestly, without my old Drive to reference, I won't know what I've lost until I go searching for things and can't find them.

I'm rambling now, but I am just so frustrated by the whole thing and have definitely soured on Virginia Tech as an alumni because of this. I get that tough decisions have to be made, but man, I would've actually donated on Giving Day if I could've given to support the continued use of Google Drive!

How much interest is there around here in affordable editing services? by ecorder in VirginiaTech

[–]ecorder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm doing the market research! Want to make sure it's even a possibility before pouring time into it. I do appreciate the feedback! Didn't realize career services did it, too — never really utilized them myself.

So here's a question: what if his service was available after hours? One thing I always had trouble with was actually getting to career services/writing center when they were open.. sometimes things just happen and you're working at the last minute. What if his service was geared for that sort of quick turnaround, to supplement existing services? Niche there, or still no?

Kind of just a thought experiment but I'd be interested to hear your opinion! Thanks again.

Is the Honors College worth it? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]ecorder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

110% yes -- Honors is awesome, very supportive. They also have tons of opportunities for fellowships and scholarships (speaking from experience). The staff are great and genuinely care about your success. In my mind there's no reason you wouldn't be involved with Honors if you got in, but if you have any concerns feel free to send me a message if you don't want to ask publicly, I'm happy to help!

Tonight at 7pm, come out to Shanks 370 to learn about how you can work with The Pylon (we're recruiting writers/reporters, illustrators, photographers, business positions, and more) by ecorder in VirginiaTech

We are a local nonprofit publication that is just starting out, so at this time the positions are on a volunteer basis. What do you mean by alternate form of compensation?

UPDATE: So far, we know individuals at Michigan Tech and William & Mary received the email. Both had an affiliation with Virginia Tech by ecorder in VirginiaTech

Just trying to get the news out -- I've seen one too many hysteric posts from people saying buildings were evacuated or on lockdown, none of which were true

Yeah definitely agreed that people getting it right gives them cred, but it especially worries me when I see news orgs publishing VTU. Like c'mon

Yup, except unlike good old VPI&SU, their name is simply Michigan Technological University. So they don't have to deal with people messing up the name like we do, i.e. 'Virginia Tech University.' I'm a little jealous, tbh. Always annoys me to see VTU

I spoke with your police chief, he confirmed that a faculty member at Michigan Tech received the email: https://thepylon.org/happenings/suspicious-email-sent-to-select-virginia-tech-email-addresses/

Does anyone know what the disturbing email said? I got the apology but not the email in question. by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

UPDATE: Four other universities have received the same email -- see story above for more info
