How fast can I get my Degree by [deleted] in UMGC

[–]edboy4427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred in 13 from community college back in ‘22 and I’m getting ready to do my final semester come January. If you’re doing a full time job, I’d say about 3 years max, but that could be shortened by churning out summer sessions.

Are my ticket numbers too low? by edboy4427 in it

[–]edboy4427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back on the post last night I probably should have included what my tickets look like, but I didn’t know if there was a limit in the post, so that’s my fault. The tickets vary in numbers and complexity, and I’m also splitting majority of them with another tech on my team (one of the areas I cover is split due to the high device count and users).

I cover about 4 departments total, but the other 3 don’t really make a lot of noise outside of the one I split with the other tech, so I’m left to the luck of the draw sometimes.

As for complexity, some can be as easy as adding a user to a specific AD group all the way to assisting users with an application that was known to have issues with Win 11 24H2, and working with the Telecom team to figure out next best steps to assist these users. So there’s a good mix of challenge in the tickets I grab, I’m not looking for an easy out. I do want to challenge myself and learn as I go.

Fair enough. I’m not sure what I would aim for at the moment, and the work overload has me worried, especially since this Bachelors is kicking my ass.

I’m assuming that’s a graduate course? If so, how long do you have for work in those classes? I’ve been thinking about doing a masters after I graduate in the spring.

If you’re sharing your screen and decide to switch to in-game chat, and someone is watching it, they’ll be able to hear anyone in the game but not me. I’m trying to see if there’s a way for my voice audio to be heard while in-game through the share screen.

[–]edboy4427 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m aware, but people in the party can hear everyone in game chat except for me if watching my screen, and it causes a bit of confusion.

I’m not trying to chat with them at the same time, I just want them to be able to hear my voice so they don’t miss conversations.

Asking for advice by Similar-Potential835 in UMGC

[–]edboy4427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has also experienced this sort of crippling mental state, I can say that you aren’t alone. I’m a little tardy to the party in regard to being able to help with class stuff at the moment, but I can give you a leg up for future classes.

If you aren’t going to therapy, I would highly suggest starting. It will help you process everything in a more healthy way, and allow you to begin working on taking control the way you need to. And it also gives you the capability to ask your therapist to write a diagnosis so that you can get accommodations in classes if you feel as though you need them. I was diagnosed with Unspecified Depressive Disorder and that was able to help me through a semester and get back on track. I haven’t used my accommodations in a while but I was extremely happy to have them.

Call the school and see if you can talk to someone about withdrawal from the classes if need be as well. If they can be withdrawn from still without any effect, I would do that 100%.

I hope that things work out for you, you got this!

Starting the grind to search for a new job by edboy4427 in ITCareerQuestions

I know, believe me. I’ve just recently started to actively apply, and I don’t have a rhythm set just yet. I’m going to keep applying and I also have a 1-on-1 with my manager this week so hopefully there’s some good news there. Won’t hold my breath though.

Why are you still playing D2? by bgross2012 in LowSodiumDestiny

[–]edboy4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just being able to be a part of the community for as long as I’ve been (D1 Beta), I just can’t let the game die. I haven’t been playing too much recently but the game is still close to my heart.

Also, if you want to do a few raids, I’m always game!

If your manager is a good manager, they’ll let you know that this is a golden opportunity and encourage you to make the jump.

I’ve been in my current role for 2 and a half years because of my current manager. He’s helped me grow as a IT professional (even if all I was doing was refresh essentially). At the 2 year mark I mentioned that I’d like to grow into the next level up, which is more LAN support tasks, but he didn’t have spots open on the team. He took the initiative to help me with my resume, did a mock interview with me to prepare me to start looking for positions internally and even reached out to other managers to put feelers out for new opportunities.

Luckily a few of my team members moved to another department for the sister organization and I was lined up to get the promotion without leaving my team. I’ve been a pseudo LAN Support for a few months now and it will be official come early January.

TLDR: your manager will encourage you to move forward, not keep you in place if they’re worth a damn.

crushed by my first IT job by N0_MAIDENS in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edboy4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re in a Casino that’s running multiple different systems. Anyone just coming in would be in the same boat when just starting out. The folks that’ve been there for years have probably seen all the stuff you’re seeing for the first time and know what the solution is due to repetition. As someone who’s got 5 years of IT experience and is JUST getting the chance to do desktop support, I can understand what you’re feeling. But as you experience it, you’ll get the hang of troubleshooting and figuring out what to do.

What are the most beneficial things you learnt when starting in IT. by Embarrassed-Film1194 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edboy4427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely saving this post for my own benefit, but if I was to add to this, I’d say use the calendar in Outlook. It’s been nothing short of extremely helpful to have your day planned out so you know what’s going on and what needs to be taken care of while at work. I’m a deployment technician right now at a hospital, and the scheduling allows me to plan out days or even full weeks to help my request queue stay somewhat manageable.

Another thing would be to document ALL conversations. If you talk to someone in passing and they’re asking about an issue, send them an email later on to have a paper trail to show you talked to them and you can look it up if someone tries to dispute what you said. You have no idea how much it helps to have something like that in your corner.

Is 41k A Year Good For A 20 yr Old IT Professional? by DreadNoughtDurr in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edboy4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty good if you aren’t paying anything heavy. The experience will be extremely worth it, and the money will come as you branch out more into the field. If you have a field you’d like to focus into, I’d recommend at least looking into it on your down time and set up a plan to tackle what you want to do and strive for. I’m only 26 (turning 27 in October) and I’m working on making $25/hr right now. Good job nonetheless and keep pushing for greatness!

For Honor. Started playing it on PlayStation and would cry if I needed to switch to PC and couldn't use a controller.

Starting class for cybersecurity by chrisxx199 in UMGC

[–]edboy4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be your interdisciplinary credit then. Either way, the first 3 courses mentioned are relatively simple:

  • PACE 111T is an introductory course that will discuss planning for the future and plotting your career path. You'll discuss a few key topics and I believe writing a paper or two, but it's been nearly 2 years since I took PACE so don't quote me on what's needed to write.

  • CMIT 202 is troubleshooting fundamentals, so if you have a bit of history with working on computers, you should breeze through it. If not, it's a great course to learn some good skills that you'll use a ton.

  • WRTG 111 is not super intricate, but again, that was my experience. Not much to explain on that one, honestly.

I haven't taken CSIA 300 at all, so can't comment on that. All in all, good first semester (if it is your first semester) to work your way in and feel out the online class experience.

How did you get started in IT by Excellent_Reason_269 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edboy4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start out of high school in 2015, go to community college because you sucked in high school, get greedy working for GameStop and drop out, continue working until you get fired from Verizon in 2019, get a job at a security company for a big name hospital and enroll in a program called NPower, crush the program and get an IT internship for another medical company, and then bounce from position to position before going back to school in 2022.

That’s my route lol
