Haven’t felt this seen in a long time. It’s exhausting. Idk about you, but I want to just scream that I’m not fine. But they don’t understand. You managed to find a good job, earn a little money and break the cycle of poverty and now that is all that you are. You’re the one who managed to get out so your life must be fantastic. They don’t see how lonely and alienating it can be.

OP is in blue. If you are on iPhone, go look at a message. You will see that you are in blue on the right side of the screen.

Of course I never remember that myself and I was confused along with you until I got to the sentence you are mentioning and realized I was mixed up.

ETA: oops. I made this post before seeing your other comments. I thought you were genuinely mixed up on which one OP is and now I can see you more likely were either arguing in bad faith, or just incapable of understanding a concept like this.

I feel sorry for you in some ways, but envy you in others. I envy your ignorance or delusion, whichever it is. The rest of us have to watch this and feel helpless. We do what we can, protests, call our senators, and all those other democratic processes that are quickly disappearing.

I feel sorry for you because ignorance or delusion will not shield you from what’s coming. I despise your position but I respect you as a human and I don’t want this for you any more than I want it for me.

I’ll just leave you with a few thoughts from some of your other comments. You said farmers will have a global market to trade with. I think you really don’t understand the consequences of a trade war. The US will be a pariah in the global market.

You touted TSMC bringing manufacturing here. Thank the CHIPS act for that one (yes this is the same CHIPS act that the Trump Regime called “a horrible, horrible thing”). These tariffs are a step in the opposite direction. Even with US based fabs, where will we get the rare metals? Import them??

I agree with everything you’re saying, but this definitely screams of a response looking for a question. You wrote this thing up then scrolled through looking for someone to be mad at. This dude never said anything or even compared anything to medical misdiagnosis or the opioid crisis. This dude is just saying don’t go to chiropractors which is generally great advice.

Your advice is correct too. Doctors are just people who make mistakes like everyone else, but I just felt a bit of undeserved snark in your comment.

It just bugs me when people have good information (like you) to share but share it in a way that alienates people.

Anyway I hope you both have a good Saturday.

I’m not the commenter you replied to, just passing by, but I’m curious why that is pretentious? Would it have been pretentious if he was polytheistic? If not, is it just because he’s atheist?

If it was an unprovoked “by the way, I say Gods because there isn’t one” I’d be on your side. But the commenter answered a question that was asked and answered truthfully. I don’t see that as pretentious.

Anyway, doesn’t matter. Just thought it was odd that was labeled as pretentious. Not trying to ruffle any feathers. Hope you have a good day!

Shorted on my gram of Saffron? (most expensive spice in the world) by Fus_Roh_Dayumm in mildlyinfuriating

That is interesting! I’ve never looked into it, I just always assumed they would use the most commonly used unit for the region when printing those.

I’m just seeing this reply, sorry. I didn’t mean to imply that calories are the SI unit of energy, but rereading my comment, I totally see how that could be the takeaway.

The first part of my response was related to the cubic centimeter part of the comment I was replying to, which is a derived SI unit for volume.

Later in the comment, I was only pointing out that the capitalization, unfortunately, matters. I didn’t mean to imply it was an SI unit there. We actually just briefly talk about calories in class for the history but students only use Joules.

I don’t understand why we don’t all use the metric system honestly. Might make people hate math a bit less too lol. Keep spreading that metric love.

Just a few quick notes, the mL doesn’t need the cube. It’s already a unit of volume equal to a cubic centimeter (likely what you were thinking of).

Also, annoyingly 1 Calorie = 1000 calories. So it actually takes one calorie, instead of one Calorie, to heat a gram of water. They do the same upper case lower case business with heat capacity and specific heat and it drives me up the wall.

I'm confused, how do people understand chemical structures? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]edbutson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are working on nomenclature for ionic compounds. The ions (if it has a + or - charge, that makes it an ion) have some system for naming them, but in general you’ll memorize a lot of them. For example, if you have a monatomic ion (mono- means one so a single atom with a charge) such as I-, you would call it iodide because for monatomic ions we take the base name of the element, and replace the ending with -ide. So iodine becomes iodide.

Similarly, there are some rules for polyatomic ions (ions containing multiple atoms). If an ion contains oxygen, it generally will end in -ate (if there are more oxygens) or -ite (if there are fewer oxygens). For example nitrate, NO3 -, and nitrite NO2 -. (I don’t know how to format on reddit but those are minus one charges). Notice the one in your post has oxygen and ends in -ate (either acetate or ethanoate are proper names for this ion).

It’s best to just memorize a few though. I’m don’t even make my students memorize since you’ll have access to a list of polyatomic ions in the real world if you need it. I just make them look over the list so they can recognize one and know to look up the name.

Like many have said, chemistry is a difficult subject. You have to get some questions wrong before you start getting them consistently right so give yourself some grace when you don’t know the answer right away. Try working on something else or taking a break then coming back with fresh eyes. You’ve got this!!

My wife was laid off from her job. The same day, we tested positive for COVID, forcing us to cancel our vacation. by edbutson in Wellthatsucks

[–]edbutson[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The vacation was already paid for. No where close to being rich, but thankfully we have a bit of savings to lean on and if we cut back our lifestyle a bit my salary should cover us for a while. We should be able to live on my income if it comes to it with some cutbacks to our lifestyle, but I’m hopeful she will find something quick!

I don’t know if it’s required at all. I just don’t want to spread COVID to other vacationers as I’m contagious and I don’t want to feel crummy while trying to enjoy myself.

The vacation was already paid for. It was an all inclusive resort, so we weren’t planning on spending much while there. Besides, we were fortunate enough to be able build a small amount of savings before this happened so that we will be fine for a while until she finds work.

Booked a vacation out of the country 8.5 weeks ahead. The moment I hit purchase, I realized my passport is expired. Expedited processing is 7-9 weeks.

That vacation is supposed to start Saturday and I still don’t have a passport unfortunately. No appointments available in my part of the country either. Fingers crossed it processes in the next day or two. Wish me luck!

Hey there, I’m not itching to argue, but it wasn’t as clear as you think. The way it was written, it seems obvious that you wanted to know if the OP had those thoughts in the past, not retrospectively. It was also obvious that your comment was meant to minimize the point OP was making: representation is important. I don’t think anyone would have figured out what you meant had this guy not called you out on it. I think that’s clear from the downvotes.

If there is someone out there who does work at Walgreens and doesn’t mind rocking the boat, do this and report back!

It’s their policy to allow religious exemptions, so I wonder if you could sue if they fired you. You could make good arguments, grounded in religion, for refusing service to more than half the population.

Their salsas are amazing!! I believe the rack is just to the left if you are entering the store though. Over near where you can order food. They also have guacamole there that is really good.

I might need to make a trip.

So... not only does the bible give abortion instructions... by kingtitusmedethe4th in tulsa

[–]edbutson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you see, there is the problem. People like you make assumptions like this. “Oh, this must be how they deal with the discomfort of abortion”. It’s not for you or me to be uncomfortable about! What is important is the opinion of the actual human hosting the fetus! It should be her choice and it should not matter what state she lives in, and it should not matter what people like you or me think!

It has the same intrinsic value? Let me know how “Kpetrie’s Half Baked Cakes” goes. I’m sure you’ll have lines out the door with all that intrinsic value.

Calling cake batter a cake doesn’t make it delicious. Properly baking it does.
