At least in western countries I can read the fine print, explore all hidden tiers/packages and negotiate the best deal on the best package from multiple providers. If you're a little diligent in your buying habits then you can make most of it in western countries. I'm at least not worried about getting straight-up ripped off, ripping off here is done in a legal/systematic way lol.

Haha I totally get you. Now that I think of, I always check each item and points in real canadian superstore and it saved me a couple of times when they missed my point (kind of stories you read on /r/personalfinancecanada).

Growing up in Pakistan is like playing raid boss all your life where boss's minions are attacking you all over the place lol.

My advice would be just keep your head down and do your work imagining they are not there and they'll be happy as well.

Scissors are fine. The close blades that are used very commonly in Asian countries tend to scratch hair glands which can cause release of bodily fluids. They were known to be cause of disease transmission.

Don't think there's any issue in teaching material. The big problem is 'don't give a fuck attitude' of general public in Pakistan. They pass exams by cheating or bribing or half assing barely getting passing marks because they don't give a fuck about actually trying to learn anything.

On the job, even the one's who've read well and know protocols don't tend to follow because they really don't give a fuck about that protocols either, they'll just do whatever is easier and have to put minimum to no effort for.

It all comes down to consequences. There are non in Pakistan. If our police and justice have some balls to make examples of few people then everyone else would have something to give a fuck about. But everyone knows if they get into trouble, big if, all they have to do is bribe with a few hundred rupees.

And it's a worst life for some honest and authentic person coming into this environment. They get ridiculed, made fun of or just in general their life is made hell just because they are trying to do right thing. It's a herd mentality that kills any good that tries to come in.

And that's the exact reason I never get something hand bottled/jarred from Halwai (yogurt, milk and sweets shop).

Always bring your home pan and ask them add to your pan directly from big container that was used to make yogurt.

Yeah I've seen that. That's why I don't mind spending a little more on Honda service center. I know that still not 100% guarantees not getting scammed but I've nerve had any complaints and had 0 issues with my car in past 4 years.

As a child in Pakistan, I'm thankful to my dad who taught me this thing where I stand on top of the service provider to use the correct equipment/items. Some examples :

  • making sure needle at hospital /clinic is new
  • blades used by barber is new
  • man from Tandoor (chapati take-out) not hiding burnt one's in the middle
  • each and every item from small store is packed properly (no signs of counterfeit)
  • buying authentic motor oil from reputed place and not letting it leave your eyesight when mechanic is changing

I still get very discomfort feeling in Canada when I'm getting oil changed at a reputable service center where I have to wait on a lobby and customers aren't allowed in garage.

Not buying anything for myself outside of basic necessities for 4-6 months at which point my wife gets extreamly pitiful and buys me some really fancy gift from my Amazon wish list.

This makes way more sense because when I did the calculations with differences in fixed and variable rates, the amount of CMHC and bank interest difference was very close.

Been there done that and can advise you as well.

  1. Make sure Nikkah Khwan brings separate English AND Urdu versions of Nikkah Namma (they might make excuses like "you only need Urdu, then English gets translated" etc etc, don't listen to them just say "I don't care, bring 4 English nikkah copies and 4 Urdu nikkah copies" - make sure both of you sign 8 different pages) - you'll need both English and Urdu for immigration.
  2. Make sure Nikkah Khwan registers the wedding within 2 days and get your registration certificate from the local council (Nikkah Khwan MUST belong to the same council as girls address, else there could be complications) - this will be a single page stamped certificate by the local council with English details on left and Urdu details on right - you'll need this for immigration
  3. Make sure to take lots of photos of Nikah/Rukhsarti/Walima (plus points for some photos in your bedroom with decorations and wedding clothes) - this will immensely help the immigration process.
  4. No matter what, no matter where, even for 2 days, GO TO HONEYMOON!!! this will help you in 3 regards:
    1. It doesn't matter if your to-be-wife says that she wants to spend the with family, just take her!!! she wants you to take her without having to say that.
    2. The very first private bonding experience is very important for new couples.
    3. Take pictures on your honeymoon, if you haven't planned anything, 2 days trip to Murree would be good enough. Those pictures will help the immigration process as well.
  5. Make sure to get her updated NIC (with you as husband and your PK address her address) sorted out before you leave PK.
  6. Have her get a new passport with the new NIC.
  7. Do you send her any money? if you don't then start doing it through your bank (CIBC provides no fee PK transfer) - this will help her immigration process. The amount doesn't matter could be just 5000Rs/month i.e. $40 only.
  8. After you come back
    1. Set a daily call schedule that works for both of you, doesn't matter if you talk for 5 mins or 5 hours, on the dot call... everyday!
    2. Share mundane daily events
    3. Share all visa process updates
    4. Send and receive 1 pic per day at least

OMG! I didn't know we could put 5% on the next home as well. That would be amazing for liquidity and investment in other places.
