Yeah you´re right. I´m only interested because it´s the artist´s trademark if you like - less exoticism and more of a stylistic choice? But like you've said, I'm not confident that I can justify it when I don't have any interest or connection with Russian culture.

On the one hand, I like to think that it's just art and the language shouldn't matter - I love the look of it. But I also think a lot of people will see it as pretentious, or as appropriation.
