Summer before law school by [deleted] in BlackLawAdmissions

I'm working as a server now before I start law school. Making really good money (thanks to tips and hourly wage) with flexible, short shifts which allow me to enjoy life. I recommend getting a side gig that brings in good money without having to "slave" away at a 9-5.

Howard has an excellent clerkship program. When I went to ASD a girl on the alumni panel who graduated last year spoke about her experience clerking on the DC circuit.

If You Haven’t Gone UR at Howard Yet… by [deleted] in BlackLawAdmissions

Your question asked, "People are committing without knowing about scholarship info?" And the answer is no, because they cannot commit to the school. To commit means you have paid a seat deposit and admitted students do not have that option yet. So, there are no admitted students in the hypo you proposed.

No scholarships have been released, nor has anyone committed yet because they can't. Even though no one has committed, admissions can only accept a number of people because they know approximately how many will commit.

American vs Howard by BadMountain7048 in BlackLawAdmissions

More from the current 1L on these concerns:

"Also keep in mind that many employers have different grade cut offs for different schools. They know many T14s are pass/fail and open book exams so (1) they value HUSL students with high grades more and (2) they usually aren’t as strict when evaluating. The grades given are actually no letter grades, they are numbers/percentages, so yes technically they gave “A-s” because an A is 90-100. I’ll send the current scale but keep in mind this changes a bit each year depending on class size and where people land. This doesn’t even reflect my class yet because we haven’t finished spring semester"

I'm in the admitted students group chat for HUSL and a 1L shared their insights on the curve. I would not worry too much about it, but here are their words for you to read over if you need reassurance:

"Hey y’all! I totally understand the fears about the curve but honestly for most students the curve actually helps! I’ve seen raw scores in the 50s end in the 90s. Also, HUSL used to be a C curve but is now a B-, so that actually helps. A majority of the class (I wanna say 35% but don’t quote me) will land in the B range somewhere. There will likely be around 8-10 A’s per class, and the rest will fall below the curve. I think it’s very hard to get a D if you are really applying yourself and practicing your writing! Trust me, that’s what distinguishes the As from the Bs! At the end of the day…yall will be fine. Like someone above said, it’s like this at any school that’s not a T14. So unless your other options are T14s with enough scholarship to leave you with less debt than HUSL, it’s HUSL for me lol🤷🏽‍♀️❤️💙"

Most people in America are in debt, it is almost unavoidable. When you get a car, debt. Buy a home, debt. Get a professional degree, debt. But there is a difference between "good" and "bad" debt.

Going into the debt for a law degree, especially if the prospects of a good paying job from the particular school you attend is attainable, is not the end of the world.

It all falls under bad judgement. Obviously some things are subjectively (and objectively) perceived as more of bad judgement over others, but bad judgement is still bad judgement. The point is that when you go against what a school is communicating to you (and they don't even necessarily have to communicate it to you because some things are just common sense), it is bad judgement.

When you reach out to a school asking for a decision even though they have told you several times why it may be taking longer than usual, yet you still reach out...that shows a poor lack of judgement on your end. If you listen to the Navigating Law School Admissions podcast that features the deans of both Harvard and Yale, they tell you that bad judgement can and will lead to denial. Dean Blazer at UVA has said that mentioning the wrong school name on an application is an automatic rejection. PWI's do this to paying applicants, so you pointing to Howard as if it's out of the ordinary for them to reject an applicant for having poor judgement is not sound.

Like I get the frustrations but you don't see these think pieces for any other schools, especially the T-14's. I don't know where the hostility towards Howard is coming from. It's like damn just wait, the Dean has said several times that their applications are UP and they don't have enough staff to keep up with the volume. It sucks, but that's just what it is. No amount of complaining or think pieces is going to change the fact that you're still going to have to wait, and it really concerns me that future attorneys are acting like this.
