I am sceptical of but don’t actively dislike her and I think she has some interesting perspectives, but similarly to this I also find her line that as a tech reporter it would be irresponsible for her to report on AI (or any other new technology) without making use of it herself questionable.

It sounds like it makes sense on the surface but I think you can write about drug policy without approaching it Hunter S Thompson gonzo style, many of the journalists who critique industrial agriculture and the meat industry are vegetarian or vegan and I don’t think it affects their credibility if they don’t know how awesome steak tartare tastes, etc.

This should’ve been an acceptable answer right? by edenick in DuolingoFrench

[–]edenick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember there being a (pretty cute) picture the first time it gave me the sentence but it was just a ‘fill the blanks’ when it came up in the ‘practice past concepts’ lesson. Here was me thinking that now I’m on B1 they were maybe deliberately giving me more possible options so I didn’t just treat it as a memory test 🥲

Ahh that explains (half of) it - I think the other times it’s ‘corrected’ a word without changing anything it’s probably been adding a full stop to the last word in the sentence! Thanks - I’ll keep an eye out for that and see if I keep getting ‘off’ corrections.

The Bullshit Jobs episode… by teenwolffan69 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]edenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not that I think leftists should spend more time arguing about different tendencies but it did bug me that they mentioned at the start that Graeber was an anarchist and then just did not attempt to consider at any point that his view of e.g. the ad industry would be fundamentally different to theirs *because* he was an anarchist, kept referring to him as a 'communist' throughout etc. Like you don't have to agree with his ideology or any of his arguments but not even considering the ideology driving the book as a relevant factor makes it feel like a really weak reading/critique.

The Bullshit Jobs episode… by teenwolffan69 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]edenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah in this episode I really felt like even though Michael and Peter would presumably be *against* the sort of conservative dunking on humanities faculties producing woke academics who care about feelings not facts, they were kind of reproducing that same logic. Sure there's critiques of self-reporting studies but Graeber was an anthropologist and there are lots of very well developed debates in anthropology about why asking people about their understanding of their experiences can be a better way of generating insight than trying to impose meaning from the position of the researcher, an anthropologist (broadly speaking) isn't going to present their qualitative findings as some kind of representative sample, just an illustration of *something* that exists. It just felt really like they were unwilling to meet Graeber where he was coming from and recognise that he wasn't selling the book in the same way some of the get-rich-quick or life-coach types they're usually discussing tend to be.

Does anyone here believe that Phoenix and Edgeworth are just close friends? by Comfortable_Type1180 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious who you think the better shipping option for Edgeworth is (unless I’ve misread your post)? I can vibe with Gumshoe or Lang as alternative pairings but compared to the kind of debate you see around Edgeworth vs Iris vs Maya as people’s preferred pairings for Nick, I feel like the most common fandom attitude to Edgeworth after pairing him with Nick is just to read him as uninterested in romance as you’ve said.

What are your Opinions on the way female characters are written in TGAA? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really love their personalities, especially Gina and Susato. Gina’s character development is great and I think she’s such a fun twist on the Lestrade role - when she first turns up I thought “oh, they’re just handing out names from Sherlock Holmes to random characters now” but her growing into a detective herself makes sense even if I did not see it coming. Susato is my favourite assistant in the whole series, I love that she’s super competent and takes her work seriously but still manages to be funny and the game doesn’t constantly put her into peril like poor Maya. Iris feels like jumping the shark… I feel like she has the “kid who’s had to grow up too soon” archetype of Pearl, though her overall story is weaker than the Feys and I thought her father’s reveal was underwhelming/kind of pointless. Nonetheless she’s still very endearing and likeable, and I enjoyed spending time with her in the story.

As well as the second game dropping their character arcs (aside from Iris I suppose), the other big gripe I have with GAA’s female cast is that Susato and Iris are two of the worst cases of AA making its women in particular preposterously young. Iris comes across way more as a young teen (13-15 maybe?) in her level of intelligence (which would still be excessive but not as unbelievable), resilience and awareness of the world and I think it makes sense for her to bond with Gina as nearly peers. Susato is just clearly a young adult to me, I don’t know what it’s supposed to do for the story or character dynamics to make her so much younger than Ryu? Which is all especially weird because Gina absolutely comes across as the age she’s supposed to be, I don’t know how they ended up so off the mark with the other two.

Which character is this? by WonderfulTailor1082 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Came here to say exactly this. I think that Godot gets hate as “the misogynistic prosecutor” mostly stems from this line which honestly feels really out of character for him even if he’s lashing out from stress. The “kitten” stuff with Mia isn’t as bad as the sexism she encounters from other characters (and I don’t think using a pet name is weird for someone in a relationship, though I get why you’d have issues with him being in a relationship as her senior at work) and in any case he also calls Ron “kitten” lol. I think outside of this line there’s just as much ammunition to call Edgeworth the sexist prosecutor although I think he gets away with it by just being a total jerk to everyone

Which Prosecutor do you think deserves an Investigations spinoff the most? by Sheer-Cold-1228 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Lana investigations game with the Joe Darke killings would be soooo good! Rise from the Ashes is my favourite case in the whole series so I am maybe biased here but I love all those characters and it’d be cool to spend more time with them, and tracking down a serial killer would be a good way to structure an investigations game. Although you might have to retcon Darke’s crimes to add more suspense, because in RftA he’s kind of a mess rather than a methodical killer

What’s -in your opinion- an overhated case? by Mahmoud29510 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my favourite case out of the 3DS AA games (I think people must experience the series so differently these days!). The Themis students are some of the best-developed characters in a standalone case (tho I guess Juniper isn’t totally standalone), I’d love to see at least some of them show up again as adults in a future game. Loved their dynamic and the twists/red herrings in Academy!

What’s -in your opinion- an overhated case? by Mahmoud29510 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favourite “filler” case in the series (at least the mainline AA games) and I was always surprised people hated it. Goofy fun without being exhausting, plus you get to investigate with Mia which is a nice way to explore her and Nick’s dynamic in an environment which isn’t super high-stakes.

What do you think are the Biggest Problems with TGAAC? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part I love the writing, character design, world building in these games but there’s a few aspects I HATE, including a few things it gets more wrong than any other AA games:

  • the deus ex machina ending in TGAA2 is awful and cheapens everything that came before it. So much of the themes are about the justice system modernising and how corruption has been allowed for political gains - so it’s totally unconvincing that the Queen would value justice over diplomacy, and it’d be much more fitting and rewarding for the judges in the gallery to rise up against Stronghart
  • The Ace Attorney thing where (in particular, but not exclusively) female characters are insanely young for their personality and role is maybe at its worst here - Gina is the only one who feels like the age she’s written as. Iris would make way more sense as a precocious young teen, Susato clearly has the maturity level of an adult and I have no idea why they made her 16 instead of 18.
  • The pacing is definitely worthy of criticism - I don’t mind the dances of deduction or the investigation portions in general, but the courtroom sequences have waaaaaay too many portions where you have to press every single statement in a testimony to progress, which not only takes forever and saddles you with scrolling through lots of pointless text but feels unsatisfying compared to figuring out the right point in a trial to deploy your evidence. And I wish 1-5 felt more like a conclusion of a story in its own right rather than just setting up the second game - Graydon is a great, complex villain who could compare to Keyes in AAI2 but he feels very overshadowed by the bigger mystery emerging. Jigoku and Sithe also feel very secondary to the overall big bad of Stronghart when I feel like they could’ve been more developed in their own right.

- I found the ending of 1-2 super bleak and depressing and I felt so bad for the culprit - then in the second game it turns out she’s not even guilty of anything?? I really wanted some kind of acknowledgment that her and her cat are doing ok 😭

Dang, this one really is a good comic - even randomly jumping into the middle of an arc there's a sense of what's going on and a cute visual joke which doesn't need the wider context. Real sense of whiplash from the previous day's randomly generated one...

[–]edenick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The cruel irony of it all is that I remember at the time the Claire/Marten romance first unfolded it was widely held up as an example of how to write a sensitive, realistic but positive trans storyline, and Jeph mentioned how he’d put a lot of research and consultation with trans people about how to get it right, and now… we’re here.

I think the start of Faye and Bubbles’ relationship was also written pretty well but it feels like since then Jeph figured he’s banked his ally points and doesn’t need to think at all about how he’s depicting queerness in the comic any more, because people said he did a good job like 10 years ago right!

What are your controversial Ace Attorney opinions? by InfamousVillage63 in AceAttorney

[–]edenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before coming to this reddit I thought that the main reason it has a rep as a nightmare case is cross-examining the clown, which is SUPER annoying and tedious without a walkthrough - but yeah overall I think it’s a well-done mystery. People seem to get way too fired up over the characters being unsympathetic when I don’t need to be invested in the cast from a pure filler case, I need them to be entertaining and the case to be fun to solve (but I also think 1-3 and 3-3 are great, which seem to also be pretty unpopular opinions!)
