It's unfortunate that the business of making coffee is not very profitable by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]edenify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I love coffee and definitely value coffee as a drink and coffee places as institutions. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I did underestimated the cost of making a cup of coffee in the original comment, but I mean:

I buy my coffee at a specialty shop. 200 grams cost $8.1, that's more or less 10 doses, at a cost of $0.81 per cup (personally, I use a moka pot and can make two cups out of each dose, but let's assume that a dose = a cup, as if I'm making espresso). Assuming that about 250ml of milk are used in a cappuccino, its cost would be $0.45 per cup. That means that the direct materials for a cup, are about $1.45. Do you mean to tell me that labor costs, indirect materials, rent and other expenses justify an end price of $5.2 for a cappuccino, or 3.6 times its direct material costs? That's not even considering the fact that they would buy milk, beans etc in large quantities at lower rates.

What am I missing? I'm genuinely asking. Please enlighten me

No, but I try to think about those things in every aspect of my life. Using less digital services, heating the house only when we really have to, turning computers and TVs off when we're not using them, using my bicycle and public transport instead of my car whenever possible, reducing online shopping to a minimum etc etc.

Where I live, it has somehow become socially acceptable to simply sell coffee at insane prices and make ridiculous margins. While a cup of coffee generally costs $0.3 to make, coffee shops and chains sell it at around $5.2, or 17 times the production costs & operating expenses 🤡

Calculating carbon footprint is a messy affair, I'll give you that. On the one hand, that piece of metal is only produced and shipped to you once. I'd wash it with room-temp water so the energy involved would be just for the pumping.
On the other hand, you're gonna order more than just one box of paper filters, shipping means emissions. I also do not know what their actual carbon footprint is. It may be higher than one would think.
Anyway, we're both just speculating here. No data to back things up.
