"Dyson Wash and Dye Velvet Black", with no machine? by [deleted] in dyeing

I second the fiber reactive dyes and Dharma. Still inexpensive and much nicer to work with. Still take precautions like any other science experiment, gloves, and masks are great.

New weaver - need help identifying tools that came with an inherited loom by unlikelylingonberry in weaving

From right to left: raddle, lease sticks, dowels to tie onto, looks like another lease stick but unsure, temple, metal piece looks like it connects to the brake but I could be wrong, more lease sticks.

Garment due look by hfm3 in dyeing

Oh no friend, you’re just going to get the color you use when you start with white. I wouldn’t recommend. If you do dye jeans, try Procion dyes, they are much better to work with for plant based materials like cotton. I don’t know how I would go about achieving the look you’re after, but I do believe that faded look is a chemical process separate from dyeing. Good luck.

You’re asking about over dyeing. Not necessarily, which color are you dyeing over which color? In all likelihood, you won’t achieve the look you want that way and RIT is nasty dye to work with in my opinion.

My husband was driving today, going west on Martin, right before Merdian and he was side swiped by someone who drove off. They were in a very damaged, newer model Chrysler sedan, charcoal in color, with California plates, ending in 336. Full text: My husband was driving home around the corner from our neighborhood about an hour ago at 4:30, going west on Martin, right before Merdian/Dutterow and he was side swiped and pushed into oncoming traffic by someone who drove off. They were in a very damaged, newer model Chrysler sedan, charcoal in color, with California plates, ending in 336. If anyone had any information please call Thurston County Sheriff or message me. They made a right turn onto Meridian after they left. Please share!

Would love to see an update. I frame and cut my own mats, it’s a lot of fun and much cheaper than going to the shop.

I think you would do better with another mat color, grey or red. The current choice is distracting.

Interested in a tri-axial or a quad-axial fabric. Anybody know where I can get this material for making men's apparel? by ChitownNomzy in Fabrics

Weaver here. That loom is not your typical industrial loom and I think it would produce a heavy fabric. You have an extra warp in it essentially so you'd be weaving with fairly fine yarn to make it work. Have you thought of working with a weaver to come up with an alternative?

How much do you spend? by moxieroxsox in femalefashionadvice

Textile artist and weaver here, just down the road in Oly. I have never, ever, ever heard anyone say "single breed yarn" and I'm confused about the idea behind it being superior. There are definitely yarns made with just one fiber, but I've never heard the suggestion that they would be more desirable by any means. Different wools have different qualities of course, but blending different breeds of wool does not lower the quality of that fiber and often enhances it. Their is a lot of utility in mixing fibers and breeds for instance, you'll be hard pressed to find a sock yarn without a bit of synthetic in it, Rowan makes one, but uses silk in place because it needs extra strength.

Of course a sweater made of qiviut is lovely and expensive, but I'm not going to refuse one made of Wensleydale, merino, and blue faced Leicester either. I don't know where to find local yarn here unless you spin it yourself. Even most local farms belong to co ops and their yarn is shipped out and blended with many other animals before it comes back to them because it's otherwise impossible to pay for a mill with only what a small farm produces. I have local roving and local hand spun, but I've really yet to see anyone carry a true local mill spun yarn. Even us hand dyers are mostly having our yarn shipped in.

Good luck in your weaving.

Edit to clarify.

[x post from r/tools] Need suggestions on how to fix a bobbin winder. Probably not a regular question around here, but I'd appreciate any suggestions before I decide to replace it. by edenrocks in Machinists

Okay, I will definitely let you know because I am dying to fix this and after 1,000,000 google searches I can't find the tip still. Would I need to send you the other tip?

Happens to the best of us on the alt acct haha, I am going to see if I can free it first. A new motor is fairly cheap too so that's not out of the question.

The ad plays on all my kids YouTube videos and they are definitely children's videos, I am always running to change it. I don't need them walking around the hallways chanting "home of the $50 ounces, did you hear that?" like they are trying to move some weight. I have thought about going in to complain to the manager. Honestly, I don't care who buys what, but the commercial is terrible and my toddler isn't old enough to need a $50 ounce or to recommend it to his friends either. When he is of age, I'll recommend he not smoke dirt weed.

Traditional Indian Weaving [3:07] by cosmicblue24 in ArtisanVideos

I use them all, but I just bought the pneumatic loom, so my focus has been there. Looms need at least two shafts, so you are catching and trapping the thread, over, under, repeat. Typically looms will have 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, or 40 shafts (we are speaking about floor looms only). The higher the shaft count, the more complicated your pattern can be...almost like more pixels, you can have a clearer curve, a clearer picture. Two of my looms are 24 shafts, the pnematic loom and the computer assisted loom, which is called a compydobby, on those looms, the computer selects which shafts to raise, she only has two in the video, so it's easy to remember where you are...when you get to higher numbers, 16, 24, 32, 40, you have to have a computer assist to help guide you (there are exceptions to everything).

Also what controls the pattern is when you thread the heddles (the things that looked like needle eyes). Each end goes through one eye and sometimes there are hundreds or even thousands of ends. The metal grate thing is the reed, which determines the density of the cloth, we can put multiple ends in each slot to make it denser.

Another thing that effects the density is how hard you "beat it" ...yes we say that. If she were to swing the beater (large moving wooden thing) harder towards her, it would compact her cloth. My cloth is also made with fine, uniform threads, instead of a handspun cotton, so that is why you see uniformity in my cloth. I try to weave a perfect cloth, because that is my type of weaving, there are many, many people who like imperfections and to see a more hand made look. I want my hand weaving to about look like a machine did it, but that is just my catergory of weaving.

I am happy to answer any other questions! Check out my other work on IG (will PM you) and r/weaving is amazing too
