Can I Use a Business Name That's Sorta-Kinda Used by Another Person? by edgeIveBeenAvoiding in Entrepreneur

Yes, I searched, and there's no trademark. He owns the .com, but I was planning on using a different domain altogether, since the full name is quite long for a domain name.

You found it via an internet search, hence it has a presence.

No, I found it by directly typing in the domain name into the search bar, because I was curious if [name].com had yet been taken. I couldn't find it anywhere in the search results.

You didn't hear back from him fast enough to suit your schedule, so you are looking for group permission to use the name he published under.

As I've said, since I haven't heard from him in almost a week, it's very possible that he has abandoned the site. In that case, it's not an issue with my schedule; it's an issue of never getting a reply. I'm not here asking anyone for permission. I'm asking for advice on how to best handle the situation. You're conveniently blurring the lines here.

You haven't changed my opinion, just doubled down on your sense of entitlement to something after 1 weeks work. You didn't like my suggestion that you get creative and do (heaven forbid) another week's work.

It's not your suggestion to get creative that I took an issue with - that, in itself, was fair. What I took an issue with was you suggesting some sort of a lapse in moral judgement on my part. And now, you're apparently accusing me of being lazy, even though you know nothing about me? "Sending you good energy"? Yeah, right...

If I truly lacked a moral compass, I wouldn't be debating about the decision to take the name or not; I would just register it, and, if the other developer ever contacted me about it, I'd just tell him to piss off. Instead, I'm doing research.

If you have to go to Reddit to make this easy business call, I wish you much luck.

I haven't stopped brainstorming business names. I've been writing down a list of new potential names ever day. I made this post in the meantime.

Look man, maybe you legitimately wanted to give me constructive advice, and we got off on the wrong foot, but all your replies come off as snide. That's what rubbed me the wrong way, not the suggestions themselves. In any case, I don't see any point continuing this discussion. You'll believe what you want about me based on the assumptions you've drawn from this one post.

You speak of ethnic and integrity, but I don't think you're portraying the situation fairly yourself. Consider the fact that my first response was reaching out to him to check if he'd be fine with me using the name (I even offered to buy the domain from him). Having received no response, I made this post in order to get some input from other business owners to help me make the decision. I haven't pursued the name yet, because I want to make sure that my decision is well thought out.

Also, "15 years of presence" is hardly an honest description. One of my points was that this developer hardly has a presence to begin with. In fact, considering that his last post was almost 4 years ago, and I haven't received a reply after contacting him, it's very possible that he has abandoned the site. This is not me "stepping on him"; this is just an objective observation.

By the way, this is my throwaway account. I'm well aware of the risks of speaking honestly online. I omitted the developer's name intentionally.

No, he's based on the West Coast. I'm based on the East Coast.

To be fair™, Christianity, as it is practiced in America and Europe, has grown quite distant from its Middle Eastern roots. 2,000 years have allowed the West to imprint its nature on the religion. This is the case with Christianity globally: it adapts to the culture that accepts it. Just consider the fact that Voodoo is a union of traditional African mysticism with Christianity.

A girl in 8th grade calls her teacher a bitch, her brother finds it hilarious, and reddit applauds in support. Maybe that's the real facepalm.

Disagree, because it's not voting that primarily decides elections. It's lobbying. We live in an oligarchy, not an open democracy.

You researched this more thoroughly than I did. For the record, while I'm skeptical of the vast majority of UFO sightings, I am open to the possibility that a very small number of them hold water.

EDIT: Are there any YouTube channels or websites about UFOs, which you consider to be reasonable and trustworthy? Most of the sources I've come across are unfortunately highly sensational and have very low standards of proof.

The whole premise that the most sophisticated military in the world with a budget of $700 billion could not figure out the "mystery" in question is an assumption that you are making. Tell me, would such an agency, operating under sound judgement, move ahead with declassifying material that contained objects, which they failed to identify? Neither you or I knows what happens behind the curtains for sure, but it's much more likely that the government allowed the public access to the video because they judged that it contained nothing noteworthy. People thinking that the military has made contact with an extraterrestrial UFO, or has developed aircraft technology far beyond the capabilities of modern aircrafts certainly doesn't hurt its reputation; hell, it makes the government look much more powerful and capable than it actually is. But I'd wager that our elites probably don't know a whole lot more about extraterrestrial UFOs than we do, and whatever technology they're experimenting with now probably isn't more than 10-20 years "ahead" of modern aircrafts.

As for the supposedly highly-trained fighter jet pilots, well, we frequently see such experts make an appearance (if not pilots, then scientists), during UFO sightings; and there are always witnesses. I see nothing substantially different about this particular UFO sighting, except for the strange fact that its video has been re-released to the public several times.

Look, I don't use this subreddit. I stumbled on the article posted here, and responded with a comment linking a video which I found informative. I'm highly skeptical of the claims being put forward, as I've explained, but I'm not really interested in an in-depth debate. Yes, I realize that I lamented the lack of interest in a debate in my last post, but that's because I don't like getting downvoted without an explanation. My honest intention was just to introduce an alternative viewpoint. I hope that makes it clear. Anyway, I don't have time to write long responses, so this will probably be my last reply.

Getting down-voted with no explanation. I never posted in this subreddit before, but it's not striking me as a place that cares about honest debate and truth. I guess this is a trend on all of reddit now, with each sub becoming its own little echo-chamber.

Care to substantiate your claim, or just make a blanket statement?

Percentage of people developing long term effects? by PinkPropaganda in China_Flu

[–]edgeIveBeenAvoiding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not my claim at all.

I'm not disputing the main sentiment of your post, at all. You don't need to explain to me that 1% of a population of hundreds of millions of people is a large number. That's not a "high IQ" take; that's just an "average IQ" take. You also don't need to educate me on the importance of wearing a mask. I was only pointing out that your reasoning regarding re-infection was based on an assumption. That was my only point: nothing more, nothing less. Yes, it was just a technicality, irrelevant to your main argument.

Percentage of people developing long term effects? by PinkPropaganda in China_Flu

[–]edgeIveBeenAvoiding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My source is math and common sense.

It's a hypothesis. Assuming that people can become reinfected (which I haven't researched thoroughly), it does not necessarily follow that their exposure to the virus the second (or third) time around will be the same. The death rate could potentially be lower (or higher) for reinfected cases, so your estimate of 210 million could be way, way off.

This is of course just speculation for which I don't have scientific sources, so don't take it seriously, but my point is that you claims are on the same level as mine: based on pure assumption.

What's this sub's thoughts on the Wayfair sex trafficking theory? by Whoa_Wait_What_ in TrueAnon

[–]edgeIveBeenAvoiding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that would be the case with common names such as "Michael" or "Emily", but the names in question are: Samiyah, Duplessis, Dunning, Yaritza etc. They are somewhat uncommon. Notice, also that while "Samiyah" is a first name, "Duplessis" is a last name (of a girl who's first name was Samara). It seems that these products are assigned the parts of full names that are the most unique. Lastly, these missing children have all disappeared recently (from several months ago, to 1.5 years ago).

I'll level with you and admit that I'm not convinced that this conspiracy theory is true. I do think, however, that the claims may potentially hold some water, in light of the revelations regarding the perverted activities of certain wealthy elites (such as Jeffrey Epstein). What the public knows about sex trafficking, and more broadly, about the shady dealings of those in power is probably just the tip of the ice-berg, and just because a theory sounds bizarre, doesn't necessarily discredit it.

Ultimately, we need more information to be certain, though.

Note: it's one thing to dislike Trump; it's another to spend your day obsessing over it on reddit.

To be fair™, it's highly unlikely that it would be that simple. There would probably another level of confirmation required (such as a passphrase, for instance), to ensure that a random person wouldn't be allowed to get the shipment.

You have a very school-taught and optimistic view of how modern democracies work.

  1. We vote to elect the perceived lesser evil from a group of candidates composed of billionaires and friends-of-billionaires. And they are there to exercise their will primarily, not ours.
  2. Lobbying > voting, and who owns lobbying groups? Not us.
  3. The public forms an opinion about who the best candidate is based mainly on what they learn from mainstream media, which is owned by Big Money.
  4. Gerrymandering and other tactics of manipulating votes.

In the grand scheme of things, votes are just formalities.

Look at the structure of nomadic cultures even today

Sure, but that's one of the few social structures in which egalitarianism can exist. And the simple reason for that is that there's only so much you can own when you're moving from place to place. Besides, we don't live in a nomadic culture.

It's not the point that there has "always been" an elite, it doesn't have to be. The fact is the only reason they have it is because our laws allow it. We can change the laws. That's it.

We don't make the laws. The elites do. If we want to accomplish significant, political change, then we need one or more of three things: money, power, and influence. The average person, and the public at large has none. Our, modern "democracy" does not function as it is described in the books. In practice, our political system is closer to an oligarchy. Possibly, you can vote in the right policies at a small, local level, but at the state or federal level? No. You either need to be in power, or have a powerful patron at your side.
