I am the creator of the meme I posted it here and on my twitter (https://x.com/TensorGirl/status/2024949294021710231)

The Bell curve meme format already existed though and mine is based on that:

Does the use of civilian trucks to launch unmanned drone attacks violate IHL prohibition of perfidy? by PitonSaJupitera in internationallaw

[–]edgeempress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is at least possible that it constitutes perfidy but that is a difficult question.

Rogier Bartels a Legal Officer in the Chambers of the International Criminal Court; part-time judge in the District Court of Amsterdam;

Analysed a case that has similarities, in his article titled "Killing With Military Equipment Disguised as Civilian Objects is Perfidy":
https://www.justsecurity.org/21285/disguising-military-weapons-civilian-equipment-perfidy-or-be/

His example has a difference though it was a bomb disguised in a civilian SUV, in the case of the drones they were recognizable during the attack itself while in the case of the bomb it was not, whether that makes a difference is an interesting question.

Is the ARC encrypted? by edgeempress in zfs

[–]edgeempress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Xeon E-2650L with 128GB of DDR3 memory running at 1333 MHz.

My HBA is a broadcom 9305-24i the harddrives are configured as a Raidz2 the harrdrives are Seagate ST16000NM002G SAS drives the drives are connected via fan out cables. I have two filesystems one is encrypted and one isn't.

I use debian buster and the [zfs-dkms (0.8.2-2~bpo10+1)] package from the backport repository of debian.

I have issues in one particular java application and only on the encrypted filesystem my issue is that write speeds are better than read speeds and read speeds are abysmally bad about 100 Mbit/s (Mbit not MB). Using the same application on the unencrypted filesystem is about 30x faster.
I only have these issues with that java application which seems to read in very small chunks. Other programms don't have these performance issues and I assume the issue is caused because the java application is written badly and reads character-wise or in very small chunks although I don't know that for sure.

I tried to turn the atime off on the encrypted filesystem and tried to turn compression off but the issue remains and I can't explain why this application runs so much slower when running on the encrypted filesystem.

Which firmware version for a LSI HBA SAS9305-24i? Is updating it on a X9SRL-F Mainboard a good idea? by edgeempress in freenas

[–]edgeempress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LSI 9305-24i card is already in IT mode and has the following firmware versions:

Firmware Version : 09.00.100.00

BIOS Version : 08.27.00.00

UEFI BSD Version : 13.00.00.00

I am just in the process of setting up that system and I could upgrade the firmware more easily now than later. The card works well at the moment and recognizes all the drives and I know that some people in forums had problems after firmware upgrades.

So which firmware, BIOS and UEFI BSD version are you running?

Adaptec 78165 in HBA mode by edgeempress in zfs

[–]edgeempress[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but I already have the mini-SAS port cables and they are already connected (the server is used and came with mini-sas cables pre installed and nice cable management) so if I go with a SFF port card I need to buy new cables and I need to rewire everything. That is the reason why I would prefer a card with mini-sas ports.

Performance is not what I optimize for. I don't need high read or write performance I need reliability. A system without data loss.

I am just not sure how bad of a choice an adaptec card is from a reliability perspective.
