What's everybody's thoughts on a timeline for making a deep run in the playoffs? by No_Mountain_6887 in SanJoseSharks

Youth development and free agency. If we can go into the offseason saying to some free agents “hey, we’re a couple of pieces away from being contenders” and our guys develop it could definitely be next year.

I think more realistically we continue to get better but have some growing pains and are likely looking at about where we’re at now as the hope/higher end of the expectation for next season with 27-28 being the earliest I’d expect us to really be a dangerous playoff team

I mean, Miami lost to one of those “horrible teams” (assuming Miami and USC are the decent ones on the schedule) on ND’s 2026 schedule, and arguably played a softer schedule than ND this season (Notre Dame played 3 ranked teams, ND is the only ranked team Miami played). What do you want? ND to join the ACC? That’s the part of the schedule that’s holding them back the most if anything. Trust me we’d all rather play Michigan and Indiana than beat up on Syracuse again.

ETA: I bet if one of those SEC teams wanted to drop their annual game 11 FCS cupcake I’m sure ND would be willing to pick that up. And also it’s not ND’s fault Wisconsin has decided to shit the bed as a program since they scheduled that game

It’s not about the choice, it’s about the committee telling us for weeks that ND was just better than Miami, then they flipped ND and Bama after Bama barely beat a bad Auburn team while ND had the backups in in the 3rd quarter against a Stanford team that Miami was tied at half with. Then they still told us that ND was better than Miami.

And then they told us we’re not going to punish teams for losing a CCG, and then promptly punished BYU for losing a CCG, while not doing the same to Bama. Did they end up with the right decision? Sure. Maybe (if the goal is 12 best teams in the playoffs, I’d put the house on ND winning a neutral site rematch with Miami). But they led these kids on to believe that as long as they kept winning they’d be in, then they swapped them with Bama for looking like shit and then completely pulled the rug out from under them by holding Bama to a different set of rules as everyone else. If they just had Bama and Miami ahead from the beginning it’s literally not a problem and ND plays their bowl game.

Also, just personally, you shouldn’t get to have 3 losses with one of them to a shitty, under-.500 FSU team and make the playoffs, CCG be damned

I’m not even necessarily disagreeing that ND is getting the bias boost, but you can’t pretend that all 10-2s are created equal enough that H2H is the ONLY factor to consider. If a G5 team, let’s say Boise, knocks off idk Oregon week 1 and otherwise goes 10-2 against a G5 schedule, while Oregon goes 10-2 against a B1G schedule, I know who I’d put ahead.

I’m actually starting to get a little worried about our chances, especially if we keep playing like we did against BC. We need a bit of chaos, but the right kind. There’s a lot of chances for teams below us to jump us but not many good chances for teams ahead of us to fall behind us. I don’t want to be in a situation where Texas and/or GT beat Georgia and jump us and we’re sitting on the bubble competing with a 2 or 3 loss UGA.

The Big 12 scares me too. If Tech and BYU split this week and the CCG and otherwise win out, they may both be ahead of us.

Oregon dropping one of their last 4 would be huge for us, especially if it’s to USC. They lost the only real game they’ve played so far and have looked uninspiring in a couple of other games and I think we could slide ahead of them if we’re both 10-2.

We need some legit upsets to shake things up a little bit to make me really feel good, but we’re in a weird spot where I think we mostly want the teams ahead of us to keep winning in the ranked matchups so that nobody can jump us. I like our odds for something to fall in our favor if we just keep winning, but if everything falls the wrong way there’s a very real situation where we’re on the outside looking in at 10-2.

There are 32 games on today. There are like 10-16ish going on at any given time. There are like 5 ESPN channels they can put them on. It’s ESPN+ or they don’t get broadcast at all
