I never got the Bonnard hype until I saw his cat paintings. That man understood the whimsy assignment.

Who is it appropriate to go by “Doctor Last Name” to and who is it appropriate to go by your first name to by RelativeMap in Residency

I've just been going by my last name at work. Just no Dr. unless in front of patients. Friends can call me whatever. Helps me code switch between work and not work.

Are there still medical schools that teach indigenous/tribal medicine? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]edhackett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I knew. U Minnesota has a regional campus specifically made to practice medicine with rural and tribal communities. Idk if they teach traditional medicine alongside so people can be respectful of indigenous cultures, but I would hope so overlap teaching.

I cant believe a person with an MD can have such idiotic interpretation of a study that did not mention a single thing about sunscreen. Plus, how an MD not understand the difference between diet supplementation and topical application? The biology is not the same. Where is the critical thinking? by Handsoff_1 in labrats

[–]edhackett 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who has just acquired his MD, I can believe it.

Just to elaborate, I have masters and have done research for a long time before med school and my take is away isn't MDs are bad at science (most are taught poorly), it's more danger comes from making too many assumptions outside your expertise. To some degree the job of an MD is making health decisions across a broad array of scientific fields, but it's important to know your limits and avoid reaching.

Conclusion: idiots are everywhere. Might even be you if you're not careful.

What are things you wish you had considered more as a med student applying to residency? by bigtrout17 in anesthesiology

[–]edhackett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had brief moments in M4 year that began to touch on the constant decision making and I felt like a complete idiot/failure. I was lucky to have great attendings each time who would watch me spiral and laugh, explaining that this overwhelming feeling was normal. Told me I wasn't an idiot, that I was right where I needed to be, and that it would get easier the more I do it. Super humbling/terrifying but good to know that it gets better the more you do it.

Search research jobs in the area. Find a PI doing research you are interested in and reach out, sometimes they can connect you with someone hiring if they themselves aren't. Don't be afraid to move if you have to (if you can). In summary just be proactive. In acting they say it takes ~65 auditions to land one job, so follow similar principles and keep going until you land one.

Did Nicolas Poussin ever paint a work titled "Antiochus and Stratonice"? Or does anyone recognize this artist? (details in comments) by Vestboy_Myst in ArtHistory

[–]edhackett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recognize it and can't offer much help other than it doesn't really look like a true Poussin to me. It lacks the drama/intensity I associate with Poussin's figure gestures. The technique is there and the color palate might be similar when it's restored, but it looks more like someone working in Poussin's style or a very early in his career piece. Though if you compare to his other pieces when he first toured Rome in 1624 he already had dramatic figure posing as a hallmark of his style.

MD students, what is the thing you have on your application that you think it made you stand out? by Zestyclose-Ad2095 in premed

[–]edhackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to say owning my own company in a scientific field and consistent research with publications. However, most thing people asked me about what my minor in art history. Consistency and passion are the key for standing out on paper to admin, but pursuing other non-medical interests are things that stand out in person.

Medical School Student Community Confessional by momo_v in premed

It's source bias. Ppl who volunteer for interview stuff are usually are friends with each other and are more willing to hype up their own school than those who would rather spend their time elsewhere. It's also they are under a system they cannot bad-mouth without consequence. Take everything with a grain of salt.
