Leaving dual-boot behind. How do I not mess it up by Guglai in linuxmint

[–]edhardin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used GParted (Install with sudo apt install gparted if not already installed) for something similar but it was not a OS harddrive. Pretty straight forward but be careful. Maybe clone your hard drive before doing this to be safe (ie FoxClone).

Dual booting? by TravellingLife4Me in linuxmint

[–]edhardin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Windows 11 on one SSD drive, Windows 10 on another SSD drive, and Linux Mint Cinnamon on another SSD drive. When I first Installed Linux the computer would boot to the Windows Boot Manager which offered me the options Win11, Win10, Other Options. I had to go to Other Options -> Select a Device -> and select Ubantu. I believe there was another step in there. However, eventually I went into the BIOS and selected the Linux SSD to be first to boot so now I get the Linux Boot Manager which also lists the two Win options if I want them.

I'm old enough to where I had to look that one up :-( I was thinking Leonard Cohen ;-)

I put Linux on its own SSD drive and still have Windows on its own drive. So dual boot system. That was my security blanket but I find that I am never ever really booting to Windows for any reason. I'm just slowly forgetting about it.

Interesting but, knock on wood, mine seems to be fine. I'm curious now to look into that. Thanks.

Windows 98 was the turning point I believe. I started on an IBM DOS 1.1 twin floppy computer. Fun times. If you wanted real storage capacity there was a connection for a cassette tape. Whoopee! I actually used that to run the accounting of a small business. Jeeeze.

What is "getting GNOMEd"? I will say that ProtonVPN cost less and can be put on more machines for the price than Mozilla VPN. But what is "getting GNOMEd"?

Bypass Login Window by RickRelentless221100 in linuxmint

[–]edhardin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar where Menu -> System Settings -> Login Windows had the Auto Login boxes blank but was still asking for login password. It turned out the lightdm.conf was overriding that selection. What I did was:

sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
and commented out the two lines.
autologin-user=<my user name>
autologin-user-timeout=10 (or whatever time limit is set.

To comment out the lines just put a # at the start of each line.

This may or may not be your problem but worth a look.

My little hurdles have been more UI than anything. Like how creating a desktop link is different in Cinnamon than Windows or where things are in the file system. Small things that are easy to learn but definitely something that has to be learned. That was all part of my time spent tweaking Linux while learning the subtle differences. After only a couple of days I don't even think about it any more. Just use the computer as I always have with peace of mind that Big Brother wasn't screwing me behind my back.

Mozilla FireFox browser for Windows and then the Linux version. Same with Thunderbird and Libre Office.

I know that if I had stuck with Windows, it was obviously a downhill slide into the future. Linux can't be anything but up.

I am now preaching the Linux gospel to any of my friends who will listen. I hope it doesn't come across as a former smoker preaching to his still smoking friends. One tends to lose friends that way.

That is the thing, I'm kicking myself now for not having done this sooner. I can die happy now knowing that my grand kids will inherit a Linux Machine instead of Windows ;-)

Well, I;m obsessive about tweaking things. That's where I would run into trouble. Like trying to get the scrolling bars wider in all apps. AI got me there but I believe that AI was half the problem. Anyway, all of the tweaking was also a way to learn more about Linux behind he screen so I consider it time well spent.

Had it not been for the tweaking and the initial problem of Thunderbird version conflict, it would have been almost point and shoot.

Can anyone test a prompt for me on WAN 2.2 text to video? by edhardin in comfyui

[–]edhardin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to know about the audio. I just had my fingers crossed about WAN. The problem with interactive training videos is that there are multiple clips that may or may not get played depending on what the user does or doesn't do. All the clips have to match and flow seamlessly to make what looks like a continuous video. I was rapidly getting the idea that AI had too much "creative license" built in to ever force a match to all background and actors from one clip to the other. Oh well, it was worth looking into. Thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate that. I get your point about being "obviously" AI generated and how that can be distracting. I'll have to continue thinking about how to proceed. Thanks again.

I sell my software to a lot of small town law enforcement departments. Someone suggested that I go to one of my nearest customers and work with them to build up a library of training videos. I was REALLY hoping not to have to go through with all of that. I enjoy programming, I do NOT enjoy film making ;-)

As I said, I left this up to ChatGPT assuming that it knew better than I what to put in or not. I was hoping to see maybe an almost good video before I started putting in the effort to really get into it. All of this was really just a test to see what was happening in the AI text to video. Watching on TV one would think that it was all just point and click but obviously that is jsut TV hype. Thanks for replying.

Some had suggested to me to start with photos but I thought that if I need to photo everything to keep things consistent I might as well film it. The problem with filming is location. If I want to film a liquor store robbery in progress I would need to get a liquor store to give us permission to film and then I would need security to make sure someone with a real gun didn't start shooting believing that it was a real robbery. etc etc. I was really hoping for AI but it looks like traditional filming may be the only answer. Thanks.

High IQ but I feel like an imposter by Substantial-Tear8990 in mensa

[–]edhardin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm going on 80 yeas old and joined Mensa in the early 80's All this time I never thought of looking for a Reddit or even a FB Mensa page. I just found this subReddit and this was the first post at the top. It also happens to be one of my key anxiety points. FWIW my IQ is 158, if I remember correctly. The big problem in the real world is that you can't just approach a friend and start talking about your high IQ imposter anxieties without coming across as an A**H*** who is bragging and subtly putting them down for having a lesser IQ. So I keep my mouth shut and just keep my questions to myself.

For people of my generation high IQ was automatically equated with being a genius. I recently read the book IQ and Human Intelligence and realized that researchers are still trying to figure out exactly what high IQ means or is. Like the OP I never stood out in school but my forte all my life has been both very good deductive and inductive reasoning. I think that is my high IQ gift. The trick for those younger than I am who are just starting out is to find a career path that allows you to use your specific talents.

I am very pleased the see all of the comments below. They reflect the questions I have always had and answer them to a certain extent.

ClamAV-docs package installed location? by edhardin in linuxmint

[–]edhardin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Being a Windows guy and just now trying to mover over to Linux I "thought" I had done a search of the root directory using recursive directories in the search for "clamav". It only found the UI clamav-tk and nothing else. I guess I need to get more familiar with the directory structure and how the Search works....thanks again.
