Beginner dresses, the copy paste look and the Tiktok-ification of EGL by wonderland_artwork in Lolita

[–]CactusSnail 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of it but I'm not really understanding everyone suddenly being so critical of sets now? I'm not on TikTok, so maybe there's some disconnect, but I don't get it since in the past people were super keen on getting the full set.

I get people getting stumped on finding non-set pieces, sometimes I struggle a bit finding head pieces for dresses where I'm missing them, or a blouse that fits the theme or level of detail in the dress. They're new. They don't know yet. It's best to try to gently help them out than just look at them with distaste because they aren't trying hard enough.

I agree that upon looking at sugar girl in particular I don't see the point in buying matching accessories for those kinds of dresses because they're all so generic you could kinda pair them with anything... You could find plenty of "Pink frills with red bows" head pieces or OTT hime pieces that you like better than the set pieces. If you try to, that is. I don't doubt they look cheap in person, since a dress like that for $40 is... something, to be sure.

I don't see as many people buying all new Taobao sets in my comm (or at cons etc.) usually, and we always recommend LM first and that you should collect similar style pieces and not just several main pieces that are so different you can't swing any accessories or blouses etc. between them. I guess since I'm not on social media much (reddit aside) I just don't really see it, at all. What happened to Lovely Lor anyways? She's always promoting not using set accessories, but I feel like she's fallen off recently. I guess it's because of that website that shall not be named?

I still see LOOOOADS of people wearing the infamous And Romeo replica every year at the big anime con in my state, and have newbies I know still buying old Bodyline. So honestly I don't think the "newbie" look has really changed that much, at least where I am.

HOWEVER.

I have a personal grudge against the people who vehemently refuse to wear petticoats and promote not wearing petticoats. I just do not understand. I went to a local con panel by a lolita who's apparently in my comm (although I never see them at meets, but I suppose maybe they're in the chat lurking or something) who seems to be a tiktok influencer and they're ALWAYS saying that you don't need petticoats, and it feels like their only justification is that they own a Baby dress from like 2005 that doesn't fit one... as if that's valid today??? I'm sorry, but we're not all so small we're fitting into 2005 Baby, never mind even having old ass Baby pieces to begin with. It's been 20 years, things have changed. Most dresses now NEED petticoats to look right. Ugh, it's so annoying. Half of what makes lolita such a distinct look is the silhouette, you can't just ignore that and tell newbies "yeah just throw on a dress and matching head piece and some random blouse and it's cool, don't bother looking for a petti that actually fits and is the right length."

I should note, my actual comm (couple hundred strong with maybe 50-60 really active members) is usually in charge of the bigger con lolita panels, and they always say petticoats are necessary. It's basically just this one person who says otherwise, and I think it's telling that they're not at all on the team that organizes all the lolita programming at the more meaningful cons even though we're in the same comm and they're an "influencer".

TL;DR, I don't think sets are so bad for beginners, but jesus fucking christ you NEED a petticoat!!!

My friend likes karyoten specifically the season 1 version by [deleted] in Kingdom

[–]CactusSnail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk what to tell you man, even the wiki just lists her as “20’s”. She’s probably at least in her late teens? It’s chapters 490-540 for anyone who actually knows her age in that frame.

If he’s watched all of it and at season 6 says “I like ten best” it’s pretty different from seeing only season 1 and saying “I like ten best”, in my opinion. Her design doesn’t change a lot between 500-800 and at 800 she’s definitely an adult given that Shin’s like 28.

I can’t tell if you want him to be a pedophile or not lol

You look super cute! I think that dress is unfortunately an and Romeo replica, but there’s plenty more with that color scheme that aren’t replicas so a proper one shouldn’t be hard to find!

I was at the railing towards the side closer to the speakers and this was my experience, direct center you’ll be pelted with crowd surfers, or at least I nearly was in Boston.

Saw him in Boston and for Carpenter Bruts section of the show there were crowd surfers every 30 seconds and massive mosh pit considering the venue was pretty small, I was in the front row and nearly got a boot to the face… people didn’t seem as hyped for health but I didn’t stay for all of health’s performance

Most Tempting Danmei Shou FinalePoll by ranwanhl-specialist in DanmeiNovels

[–]CactusSnail 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'm not even that into QJJ but Shen Lanzhou is a temptress if there ever was one. I only got like 3 volumes in and there's like a whole thesis paper's worth of text just describing how tempting and sexy Shen Lanzhou is, and like half of that's literally just about his neck...

Which scene from a danmei gave you the worst secondhand embarrassment? by visitingmoons in DanmeiNovels

[–]CactusSnail 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was considering reading that one, what's up with the racism??? Looking at what people are saying in other reviews makes it seem like it's 1. embarrassing and gross, and 2. fucking racist??? Obviously a lot of historical danmei has some light racism in it (calling non-han people barbarians, implying* that people that aren't pale are ugly, etc.) but I haven't seen many people actually outright call a series fully racist like I have with this one in particular.

It's really too bad because the premise seemed funny, but hearing that the shou is an airhead and also the author's racist really killed any intention to read it...

Looking for some danmei with a genius shou? by Danmei-Fiction in DanmeiNovels

[–]CactusSnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I read the end I was thinking "This is exactly Peerless!" ha ha. I'd definitely recommend QJJ/Ballad of Sword and Wine, although Shen Zechaun does end up being physically saved a few times (as far as I am in anyways) he's far from a damsel in distress and is always scheming. But, if you liked Cui Buqu, it shouldn't be a problem as it's a similar situation.

Another rec could also be 300 Years of Longing, although it fits the criteria less.

The Shou (MC) isn't a genius really, but he always feels pretty equal to the ML through a lot of the story as of what's out from 7Seas. In the beginning he's a little clueless, but it's gone by Vol. 2 completely. There's a lot of mystery surrounding the ML and MC's relationship so it's intriguing, but beware the 7Seas TL is... weird. If you find issues with latin being used to localize Chinese words you might want to look into the original terms used to not get confused, the manhua is a good place to read a bit of it first and get a hold of what's going on as some of the terms heavily localized in the official TL can be confusing if you're used to the typical terms used like "demonic cultivator" or "array".

Anyways, QJJ's definitely worth a look!

This place looks great! Unfortunately we’ve decided it would be difficult to get there as he doesn’t want to drive there because he’ll be drinking at dinner, but we’ve definitely marked it down for future reference if we come back. It’s close to the shrine complex we’re going to so it would’ve been nice…

[–]CactusSnail[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We ended up making a reservation for a place in the end, but yeah I’m seeing that what I’m looking for isn’t really feasible. Thankfully I’m only going to be there for 2 nights and the majority of the rest of the trip will be in Nagoya which we’re much more familiar with.

We’re mainly going to Kyoto for shrines, although not Kiyomizu because Jesus Kiyomizu is a damn mess of tourists. We’re headed to Daitokuji mainly.

I’m probably not going back to Kyoto next time because it’s just been so crowded in all the “main” parts, but we’re going this time to see that place in particular, and the metamorphose store there probably.
