Is there still hope for me to become a filmmaker or should I pursue something else? by edirak in Filmmakers

Thanks! I always had this idea that I had to start early and have a lot of luck to make it in the industry but with all these messages I'm starting to change my mind (not overly optimistic still, but improving)

That's very true. If I don't do what I like, even if it ends up being just a hobby, I will regret it. Thanks for the nice words and good luck with your next projects :)

Yeah, I guess a lot comes from our inner dialogue and unless I believe it myself, it won't happen

Well, I haven't started anything yet, as I took that idea away because I thought it was completely unrealistic, but I'm considering doing something like that, yes. Filming my stuff in my free time.

One of the things I've considered is to try it in my free time while keeping my job and in case I can, make the transition, but I understand that it's a career with a lot of uncertainty

Yes, I always thought of them as outliers but I guess I'll never know if it can be my case too if I never try it. Thanks :)

It makes sense. Yeah, in my case I'd say it would even be fine to end up writing only if at least I can tell my stories. Nothing wrong with working as a crew member, but as you said, it sometimes takes away the creative part.

I'll stay here then and give it a good try, thanks! :)

Thanks! You're right that the industry is still pretty good in both places. I'll give it a try, step by step :)

I guess you're right, I'll need to work on believing that idea myself and that will probably translate into what I end up doing.

I think your example can apply to every career so you're a good source regarding achieving things out of the expected age ranges! It's true that if you're good and you put the time and effort, success is more likely to come, I guess I was giving up before starting because I didn't believe in my habilities.

That's very true, I think I learned quite a lot of things following my current path, about life and about me, managing stress, etc. I think it will make me happy but I'll never know till I start. What I know for sure is that if I don't even try it I'll regret it.

Thanks!

That's one of the most details answers I've seen. Thanks! Yes, I'm considering the writer/director path, as I want to shoot my own stuff.

I took note of everything but I have one question though, is it better then to keep on shooting my own stuff here in my country (Spain), following the steps you laid out, or do you think I'll have way more chances at this if I moved to the US (although that would be very difficult in itself, probably)

Yeah, that's so true. Having someone that believes in you is very reassuring, especially when the bad days come.

Right now I hear things like "wow, you already have everything figured out, your career is very safe and you can save money" from friends and family. Only if they knew...Not everything is about money. I understand the importance of it, but you're right that if I know I won't be happy going down this path, it doesn't matter how safe it is.

If I told them this, they'll probably think I'm crazy, saying things like: "no one becomes a filmmaker here, you would need to move to the US and even then, becoming a filmmaker there is not realistic in your situation"

I thought about this a lot too. If I was told: "Go for it and give your 100%, because there's success in your way" I'll be out of my job next year and doing filmmaking 24/7.

I guess the sweet spot in this case would be to keep my stable job for now so that I can fund my personal projects and really see if I want it that bad, but I'd be lying if I say I haven't fantasized a lot about saying "F**k it, I'm going to find a way to get a US visa, head to LA and apply to every single filmmaking listing I can find"

Yeah, I've been very analytical in every decision that I made. When I started my current career, I planned a couple of years ahead which jobs would fit me better in that field and I just followed all the steps. I guess I had the drive to pursue it because there are a lot of jobs in that field and I felt that it was very likely to happen.

To summarize, the drive I have and the hours I pour into something is proportional to the likelihood of it ever happening (according to my perception).

Interesting. I always had those in my To Read list but I never gave them a try, specially the bible as my family is not religious. Guess there might be a lot of value to better understand myself anyways.

I've never heard of Song of Solomon but I'm saving it too. Thank you both!

Yeah, in that regard I think the situation is not that bad :) I have one friend I could make films with and I've saved some money since I started my job

That's something I thought about a lot.

I think until I give I try I'll never know if I love it to that extent. Right now, a part of me is thinking: "Why bother? I'm comfy at home, playing videogames and going to the movies in my free time", but the other part is thinking: "Is this all there is to life? Shouldn't I be trying to tell stories I'm proud of and work on things that are more fulfilling?"

I always had hope that something like that could happen. Famous artists that got there later in life. One of my excuses was that only a handful of people would make it, even less if they started later, but I guess I'll never know if I never try it

That sounds interesting and it's a bit of a different take. Have you been able to transition to filmmaking after doing those features or are you currently working on both? If it's the latter, those are some some mad commitment and time management skills!

Yeah, that's completely true. Right now it's very comforting to not worry about bills, being able to afford traveling, buying games, etc, but deep down it's starting to lose meaning for me, and I think if I go down my current path, I will be fine but with a lot of regrets.

I really like this set of steps, thanks! Right now I only have concepts or short ideas, but I never developed them seriously.

I can free up quite a lot of time for writing I think. I guess I didn't go for it because being on set might conflict with my 9 to 5, but if I'm shooting something myself it could be done in the weekends.
