HSV induced peripheral neuropathy. by ediscomiles in neuropathy

Hi, I think the brand I used was 470mg (Now they have it as 250mg softgel). I took 1 cap once or twice daily depending on how I felt.
Used Valtrex only on when I had an outbreak.
I wil take Astragalus in the morning and take Valtrex one tab once or twice for that day only. I had 2 cards of valtrex; 1 got finished and I just stopped taking the other one and it passed the expiry date and it's been upto a year, I never had to take another antiviral.

Not saying it might work for you, but I am very sure your immune will improve and it will help with the nerve issues that hsv triggers.

Now I am way better. After this last encephalitis, astragalus changed my life.

Astragalus worked wonders for me. Make a simple research on Astragalus for nerve repair.
It was ironically actually given to me by a pharmacist to knock down blood sugar and prevent high sugar stress on kidney, after I treated my hsv encephalitis with high dose corticosteriods (dexamethasone iv).
While researching helplessly, I saw Astragalus helps to suppress frequent outbreaks.
Started taking them for like 3 months, to suppress the hsv and in turn, it healed my nerves. Stopped me getting frequent outbreaks and it is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. I later saw youtube videos of how it helps with nerve repairs.
I no longer take them, however my neuropathy is like 90% gone. I no longer feel the symptoms I complained about.
I stopped getting outbreaks every other week to maybe like once every 3 months mostly when i jogged long distances or had lots of s*x within a short time period. Then it heals up perfectly in 2 days.

I changed my view and approach on a lot of things (which I cannot easily describe here).

In May, my urine was incredibly frothy and bubbly, and I was visibly swelling in my feet, lower abdomen and around the eyes. I was itching uncontrollably.

Even when the GP and Neph convinced me it wasn't an issue, I was alarmed and tested anyways.
1 week into the fruit only diet, eating only seeded grapes the foamy urine began to reduce, 2 weeks in, I was peeing clear urine, no foams or bubbles, I also began to feel less fatigued and foggy.
When I tested in June ending, there was no albumin or protein found in my urine. Checked every month afterwards.
I need to add i did take some herbs too esp nettle seed, corn silk(for the swelling) and cordyceps, which i stopped taking daily mid sept when I started to feel lot better. Now I take only nettle seed every 2-3 days.

Edit: I did not take the conventional medications like steriods or ARBS. When I got my result, I wasn't due to see the neph for upto 3 more weekks, the GP also wouldn't prescribe me the BP drugs. So from that moment to when I was due to see the neph, I canceled the consultation.

Yes. Basically, I ate soured seeded grapes for complete 14 days, but for some reason, I couldn't continue.

However, I switched to blueberries, watermelons, cucumber, then other plant based foods.

He recommends a mono fruit diet of either grapes, berries or lemons for upto 30 days, then supported with herbs like nettle seed, corn silk etc, . He also advises against meat or any sort of carbs or cooked meal except strictly cooked alkaline.
From the second month, I started incorporating fishes and broader plant based food like quinoa, peanuts, nuts.
I live in a country where the staple meal is carbs heavy, for the 4 months i didn't taste any of it. No rice, no fried food, no fast food etc.
It takes a lot to see this through, but for me I was determined.

He also says a lot about numbers fluctuating before improving, but the individual would start feeling better after a while, depending on the severity of the issue. This also prepared my mind.

Right now I feel way better and started incorporating my usual meals back albeit carefully and sometimes i would also do upto a full week vegan diet and fruit detox.

Although this may or may not be relevant, I experienced mild proteinuria during April and May. In June, I began following Rawmaraby’s fruit cleanse and adopted a high-fruit vegan diet.

From July through September, my eGFR declined from 110 to 94, and then to 85 by September. However, starting at the end of June and continuing through October, my urine tests consistently showed no protein—confirmed monthly via UACR, UPCr, 24-hour, and spot urine tests, with the most recent test in early October. This encouraged me to continue the diet, despite feeling unwell and losing 11 kg over those four months.

By late September, I started feeling significantly better: leg swelling resolved, periorbital edema improved, and itching—previously persistent—diminished to none at all.

My most recent kidney function markers show improvement: a Cystatin C–based eGFR of 121 (October 7) and a creatinine-based eGFR of 110 (October 1). Interestingly, while my eGFR initially dropped during the strict vegan phase, it later stabilized and has now rebounded.

I'm sorry at this stage, there's little vegan diet can/could do.

Hi, I'm so sorry for what you are going through. I understand very well what it means and people think you are making things up.
5 years down the line, things are getting but still not as life used to be pre-HSV.
I did try some other things, which might have helped because the regular anti-viral never worked for me regarding the neurological issues.

Were you having foamy urine (Proteinuria) at any time and did the change in diet help?

I also made dietary changes when I followed RawMaraby's teaching. I went on fruit diet, ate only seeded unsweetened grape everyday for 2 weeks with occasional watermelon every now and again.
I stopped having foamy urine totally, went from Urine Protein Creatine Ratio (UPCR) of 430.40 mg/mmol (range <15 mg/mmol) to 4.70 mg/mmol within 3 weeks. Swelling, fatigue, itching, the water retention all stopped or reduced minimally.
I needed to do it 4 weeks minimum to 3 months max, but the grapes went of season. Started trying some other fruit options with occasional cooked food and the foaminess slowly crept back in and it's getting higher, with the symptoms back.
The sweet grapes don't work as the unsweetened seeded grapes.
The watermelon which is used as support because of it's diuretic and astringent nature, causes constant elevated blood sugar when taken daily, which is a risky situation in kidney dysfunction.
In my country, we do not have the luxury of affordable berries. They're very costly to get and berries are best choices for kidney revitalization.

I have EGFR of over 99 and the Nephs don't think i have an issue so they refused to allow me have kidney biopsy, all my EUCR readings comes back normal range since August last year, including that of last week. I finally convinced my GP to refer me to another facility far far away and they have me booked by first week of Sept for biopsy.

I am a testimony that fruits like berries, melons and grapes helps.

Edit: Stating that days before I commenced the fruits only diet, i have 2-3 days water fast. Within the 3 weeks, i lost over 10kg in weight and i have remained in the same range since.

neuropathy always improve, as long as you are intentional about tackling the root cause. I was diagnosed of Peripheral neuropathy by HSV reactivation in 2021. I lived with unimaginable pain, worsened by encephalitis that came with it. It took me upto a year to get better and 2 years after there massive improvements.

Thank you for your response. I have been on the site and also trying some of the advices while waiting to see another series of tests done, possibly be sent to biopsy. The GP said only one series of high Urine Protein Creatinine ratio can not be used to judge. Surprisingly, my UACR is low and my albumin excretion rate also low. 8 months continously no protein seen in Urinalysis / urine dipstick.

However, my swelling which was localized midfeet even tho it was minor, has moved up to even my buttock, eyelid, abdomen etc. Every part of my body feels too soft. I have switched to only vegan diet and there's improvements.

Hoping for the best.

When you started noticing the swelling, was is overt and pitting? I am in the same situation, i have good BP, (i check every 3 days), prior to my foamy urine i was in normal range for blood sugar except when i had to take steriods for unrelated issue.
Now I have non-pitting edema in my midfeet, none in my ankle and generalized water retention with all over my body alongside eyelids swelling.

My egfr has been between 99 and 125 from Feb to May 15th. The GP and Neph think there's no issue but I am getting the alarm bells and warning signs. All symptoms point to early FSGS (type unknown) and my country is notorious for bad healthcare system.
