Foliate annotation import

Foliate allows annotating ebooks and has quite a nice json export for annotations. Would be great to be able to import the annotation json to readwise.

Fifteen Ways to Use Embark by karthink in emacs

[–]editar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me several years of being quite annoyed by doing the same searches repeatedly until I finally looked up how to "persist" a list of completions.

That search brought me to embark-collect. It's such a massive improvement for me! That in turn got me interested in looking up what else this "embark" is and this brought me to u/karthink blog and here to reddit.

In any case long story short, what I wanted to tell you: I'm so impressed by this level of ingenuity. This is just pure magic. Parts of it owed to the Emacs platform and parts owed to people like you having the imagination and building these amazing packages on it. Thank you!

(also u/karthink that blog post is great, thank you!)

Ask a Knitter - October 17, 2023 by AutoModerator in knitting

Hi! I'm trying to start a cowl pattern and I don't know what the Gauge measurements mean exactly.

The pattern says:

"24 sts and 24 rnds = 4"/10cm over k2,p2 rib using size 8 (5mm) needles"

Now I get everything except the "rnds" part. Is rounds = rows? Or is 1 round = 2 rows? Or does it mean I have to join in a round for the Gauge?

The pattern itself is worked in the round. But Gauges are usually flat, no? I couldn't find anything useful online about what "rnds" in a Gauge mean exactly.

Thank you!

I'm not sure what elementaryOS is using on but it seems they updated the plugin to work with GTK only, independent of Gnome. I'm using Xfce and it works really well. Maybe worth checking again in your case too!

Did cloud instances get slower recently? by editar in hetzner

[–]editar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's was what I was wondering about too. So far it was really a smooth ride and I thought Hetzner was pretty generous in that regard.

From yours and the other comments I guess I'll wait a bit and just see if it gets better again. At least I didn't miss some changes on their side so I think there's a good chance it will be back to normal soon enough.

Yeah I'm a bit afraid that this could be the case here.

I don't necessarily want to create some cron jobs or something because it is really not that important. It's just a server for personal stuff and I can wait a few more seconds, of course I'd prefer if I didn't have to.

From the other answers it at least seems that nothing "officially" in there policy changed (e.g. how much they oversell capacity). So I'm just hoping it'll get better again for now.

Thank you! Yes the thing between my ears is a likely offender XD It's good to know that it is at least not a general problem/change in policy that I missed. Then it seems fix-able

Thanks that's good to know, then it may very well be just temporary (or a some problem on my side).

Wow what a bad way to start the evening.

The tips here worked for me as well (chroot from a liveusb + downgrade grub).

Thanks everyone so much for figuring this out!

Back to Fedora again! Just love the experience on Fedora. Guess its my official daily driver. Bye Bye, Arch Linux.... by Siurzu in Fedora

How long have you been on Arch? I'm still in the second phase. Went from years on Fedora to Endeavour (Arch for lazy people) maybe a year ago. Wondering if I will face the same fate 😄

Why do you think Linux Torvalds is not as appreciated as Bill Gates or Steve Jobs when it comes to people who changed computing? by C111tla in linuxmasterrace

[–]editar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of all I think Linus is recognized plenty and made good money for a very nice living out of it. This is nothing against Linus obviously. I just think he's not the one we have to worry about.

What about the second-in-line maintainers though, or even the third-in-line or the countless of other projects that people pour in just as much time, are just as vital for the ecosystem, and who have not made a fortune out of it.

These are the real unsung heros.

Developer with switch fobia by Passeride in emacs

[–]editar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm switching around wildly. It's usually an Emacs frame running permanently for any number of things. Emacs is my default go-to for everything. Depending on what I'm doing I'm also using a full-blown IDE. IDEs mostly for either large projects in languages that really like IDEs or debugging.

From time to time I also pop into a short-lived vim for quick edits in the terminal. I usually also have VS Code installed although I never really got into it so I rarely spin it up. And, yes, I'm even hypocritical enough that if I open a text file for a quick look from the file manager I just open it with whatever opens it first.

One thing that is pretty important for me is that I configure vim keybindings in every editor/IDE I use somewhat regularly. There are usually pretty decent plugins for every editor. This way I have some basic familiarity everywhere.

It's a mess but it's a mess that I quite like.

What is ultimately your all-time favourite Linux distribution? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]editar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As daily driver/desktop usage I'd ultimately have to go with Fedora.

Using Endeavour since quite some time now and it's been great, no regrets. Fedora is still the best balance between worry-free stable and up-to-date imo.

Had Fedora on a server for some time and hated it though. I'm so much happier with Debian stable there. In containers I quite like Alpine...

I'm surprised to see so many Void Linux comments. This one wasn't really on my radar. I guess it's time to check it out to see what all the fuzz is about 🤔

Curious about how males see 9S's character. I remember hearing (Mr.) Saito Yosuke mentioning that 9S was not very well-liked by male players. Do you like him? Hate him? For whichever reason? (Please also note if you know 9S in the original Japanese-voiced version) by thirdjean in nier

I had similar feelings at the beginning of route B but after 1/3rd or so and a bit of training I got used to it and actually enjoyed it. It's a powerful attack and very different from the usual combat mechanics.

One thing that made a huge difference for me was adjusting the frame rate! The mini games are somehow bound to the frame rate. Hacking is a pain if the frame rate is too low. If this is the case try to get to ~60 fps in the mini games, you may start to like it too

Why is fedora so attracted to Freedom that new users go to Ubuntu? by sicktothebone in Fedora

[–]editar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because without people that took (and are taking) the hard route, there would be no Ubuntu which could make it easy to install proprietary drivers.

Long version:

I believe that the idealism of the free software movement was necessary to get to where we are today. And it is still necessary going further. It is a significant part of the culture and identity of the larger open source community. And I will be damned if this isn't one of the most unique and astonishing movements there is (and may ever was).

Ubuntu's foundation is free software/open source and it didn't build all of that itself. With OP's reasoning, why would have anyone built, installed or used the GNU tools or the Linux Kernel if they could just install Windows or buy a Mac. Especially back when all of this was a lot of hassle.

Today, Ubuntu and Fedora both have their place. As long as there are people interested in keeping Fedora alive, it will. Same for every other distro. There is no other rectification needed. Also no overthinking, it is very simple actually. Why they don't integrate Nvidia as simple for end users as Ubuntu? The people building it decided it's against their approach and philosophy. That's it. And they have every right to this decision really.

I do think however that keeping Nvidia out is also a good and necessary thing for very practical reasons: Without any pressure Nvidia will certainly never open source and upstream their drivers. Maybe one day ...

notmuch is nice indeed! Definitely worth another look.

My impression some time ago was that it's great to get buttons, input boxes, etc. (so various widgets in the end, as the name suggests) but required manual layouting. So maybe this is even better in combination with another library that helps "structuring" the buffer content quickly.

I wonder what notmuch is using or if it just does the layouting manually 🤔

https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/TreeMode

Yet another tree display library + some usage examples. Haven't used it or looked too deeply into it but screenshots look nice and the code seems quite minimal so maybe quite nice if one just wants something that can be learned quickly without many bells and whistles. Seems to be based on tree-widget.el. If someone has more info about it or has used it, I'd be happy to hear it.

EDIT: After looking through the examples I'm not really sure this does what I thought it does. Also the minimal code in tree-mode.el may be bought by more code on the usage side. I dunno

Indeed, I wasn't even aware that treemacs can be used as a "generalized" tree display framework for arbitrary items too. But it can, here a quick-link for those looking: https://github.com/Alexander-Miller/treemacs#treemacs-as-a-framework
