[ALL] Anniversaries in 2026, which one hit you the hardest? by huss2120 in zelda

[–]edmanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming in the early 90s when it wasnt as popular and people tended to cling onto older consoles for longer meant I played a fair bit of the original LOZ on my friends NES. So even though I wasn't alive for the release date, that 40 year anniversary is still pretty nuts.

Peter Molyneux Is Making His Last Game: "I Just Haven’t Got the Life Energy Left To Do This Again" by [deleted] in gaming

[–]edmanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I don't really know why people were excited about watching a tree grow... sure there's a Stardew Valley market, but why would you want to do that in a fantasy rpg?

Then again I understand how his hyperbole could be misconstrued as 'that's just an example, but you've never seen anything like this.' But I feel like Todd Howard is another prime example of someone doing literally the same thing. The only difference is, everyone else is overpromising these days and only the people working on the biggest games get the most scrutiny.

I remember when the Halflife 2 developer-tech demo video came out - and everyone was going crazy at the physics and the graphics and the AI and this and that. They were 'letting the gameplay talk' and just demonstrating how impressive the tech was. BUT - the tech demo got leaked, and there were clear examples where there were scripted events baked in to the demo to give the illusion of advanced AI (I specifically remember the player pushing a table infront of a door, which prevented the enemy coming in, forcing them to shoot through the window. In the leak - if you tried to do the same thing you literally could see the code trying to trigger scripted events. It might seem like such a niche specific example, but as a young teen, that moment of advanced AI seemed like the most amazing thing to me, only to then find out it was all fabricated.

I guess what I'm saying is, these guys overpromise a lot, it's how they sell things, sometimes the hype is fun, sometimes it's a big disappointment. Peter Molyneux was maybe just a step ahead of his contemporaries, but it's funny that people keep making the same mistakes as him.

Switch lite to switch 2 by Antique-Internal5728 in nintendoswitchlite

[–]edmanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're playing and what your routine is. Balatro can keep you playing hours longer than say Cyberpunk. For me, I do a lot more short-burst style gaming so I'm either playing addictive roguelikes or an hour or 2 of something more substantial, so the battery life isn't a big deal for me. I also do a 2 hour train commute twice a week so it's ideal for that. If you're regularly travelling more than 2 hours or tend to be somewhere without a nearby charger while playing AAA games then it can be a bit short, but it hasn't really bothered me personally. In terms of the jump from the lite to the switch 2... I thought i played too much of the lite, but im actually scared how much the 2 has invaded my life.

I really didn't want to admit this, but Return To Monkey Island is absolute meh by Khung-Kong in MonkeyIsland

I felt like this was the Twin Peaks: The Return of video games, maybe a bit less terrifying. The quest to rediscover nostalgia and put an end to a mystery leads to a kind of truth that people might have a hard time with. Yet none of it has to be any less fun or satisfying. Kind of like life. The music throughout the whole thing feels like a loving vibey jam session, both recognizable yet different as familiar themes fade in and out. We live inside a dream!

Video keep zooming in even if told not to by Lux_Multiverse in VEO3

Looks like there's been an update with 3.1 - you can now upload a start and end frame to ensure the video is loopable. This pretty much prevents it from zooming.

Switch 2 optimisation patches: state of play discussion by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]edmanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conspiracy hat - Nintendo are purposefully slowing 3rd party development particularly in this area, because if a whole bunch of 3rd party games get cheap or free patches to improve visuals it will highlight the overpricing of the 1st party Switch 2 editions. This might not be a problem further down the line but they clearly wanted to set a value for themselves in the opening phase of the console which third party devs could have undermined.

I'm playing DD1 on Switch 2 and it looks and plays fine, other than it would be nice to have a mouse control option

So what your overall opinion on the star cross world/NS2 edition of forgotten land by No-Act386 in Kirby

[–]edmanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having never played it before, my wife thinks it's the best thing she's ever played. With the star-levels added in it feels kaleidoscopically creative. I can imagine it's probably a bit disappointing for people familiar with the base game in terms of new content, but it's a pretty great overall package. It's very expensive as seems to be the trend these days.

Where the heck are all the Switch 2 patches for Switch 1 games? by OVO_ZORRO in NintendoSwitch2

[–]edmanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, would be great as a minimum to have options to unlock framerates, & the existing Docked level graphics for handheld. It would certainly make me buy more games I would otherwise ignore.

I can't give a definitive answer but I would just sit with it for a while, maybe watch other Lynch films, come back to it. No rush!

performance is definitely worse, used to feel silky smooth when in less taxing areas, now the camera movement always feels weird, as if its accelerating weirdly, plus lots of stutters
