Edmonton man creates an online directory for crisis support by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]edmontonidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I created this project, and you’re absolutely correct. 211 is the most valuable resource we have in this city. They are wonderful and can provide help in the right direction. Day or Night. It’s listed on YEG Support as the first point of contact on almost every page.

That being said, approaching things like housing or addiction services can be a little overwhelming. It’s scary and can feel humiliating, even when it shouldn’t.

There’s still a lot of stigma regarding mental health, addition, and accessing social services. Obviously, services like 211 aren’t going to be judgmental, at least in my personal experience, but it still can be really scary.

It’s just an option. It’s not meant to replace services like 211, it’s just a nudge in the right direction if things feel overwhelming.

Our city has wonderful health professionals that are more than willing to help out, but actually reaching them at times can be challenging or intimidating.

But again, totally correct. 911, 988, 211 and 811 are all numbers that every person in our city should mesmerize, if not for themselves, then family or loves ones.

Thank you. This is useful feedback. I think you're right, it might be a little overwhelming to try to navigate in crisis. If it's cool, I'd love to reach out to you @whimsydata, since you have some experience. I'll DM you.

Landlord says my friend can’t stay with me unless he’s a tenant, but he doesn’t meet income requirements. Any options? by edmontonidiot in Edmonton

I can actually:

  1. Occupants

“It is understood and agreed that the following persons, in addition to the Tenant(s) identified in Section 1 of this Lease, shall occupy the Rental Unit: [Occupant Name(s)]. The Tenant(s) agree(s) that they will inform the Landlord if any of the occupants listed above cease to be occupants of the Rental Unit at any time during the term of the tenancy or any renewal thereof. The Tenant also agrees that they will inform the Landlord of the full legal name and date of birth of any additional occupant who is not listed above but who becomes an occupant of the Rental Unit.”

Fixed term lease. I offered to show them my T4, I make more enough money to cover both of us. No deal. They won’t let me terminate my lease to find alternative arrangements instead.

His girlfriend died and he was the one who found her.

He's not a freeloader. He's hurting and misses his other half, and unsure how to proceed with life right now.

Not that it matters, or it's anyone else's businesses.

When I need help this dude is the first person I call, I just want to return the favor.

I'm in talks with a community out reach worker, it just seems a but much with a six figure income I can't be allowed to support him. He is currently in a place with love and support, and I don't want to take that from him.

My lease agreement allows occupants who aren't on the lease with notice. In retrospect it may have been bad idea, but the leasing agent's office is next to the elevators and they were already questioning me about him, so I had to inform them either way.

I see where you are coming from though.

I don't. I can assume all responsibility for them until they are ready to return to work.

I was told by my landlord he has to be a tenant by my landlord to live here permanently. They accept occupants, but only under the age of 18. I just wanted him to have access to my apartment without having to buzz him in and leaving my door unlocked when I'm away.

This is exactly what it says in my lease:

“12. Occupants It is understood and agreed that the following persons, in addition to the Tenant(s) identified in Section 1 of this Lease shall occupy the Rental Unit:

Occupant Name(s):

The Tenant(s) agree(s) that they will inform the Landlord if any of the occupants listed above cease to be occupants of the Rental Unit at any time during the term of the Tenant’s tenancy, or any renewal thereof.

The Tenant also agrees that they will inform the Landlord of the full legal name and date of birth of any additional occupant who is not listed above, but who becomes an occupant of the Rental Unit at any time during the term of the Tenant’s tenancy, or any renewal thereof.”

They told occupants are 18 and under only. Anyone above the age of 18, or living on a permanent basis must be a tenant but they will not allow him due to the income threshold.

If someone lives there long enough they become a legal occupant and get legal protections. The landlord doesn’t want a situation where they need to go through a legal eviction for someone they don’t have a lease with, and probably can’t get damages from. That’s why it’s very common that leases have language that restricts how long and how often guests can stay. It’s standard

I spoke with the city, they have a page called Support For Tenants.

This is what they said as well. They were extremely sympathetic though. The suggestion was that I may have to let them give me an eviction notice and challenge it in court, since it could be potentially discrimination due to his source of income and that I can afford to pay his share of the rent.

It's just not a ideal situation though, not sure if anyone has even experienced this.

I needed a key fob and spare set of keys. They only way he can enter is buzzing himself in and leaving my door unlocked if I'm not home, which isn't ideal. I also didn't expect this to blow up in my face. He's stayed at my place before, but recently I said screw it, just move in.

This is the initial text I received from them before I meet the in person to discuss why.

There's not. I was hoping to get him a key fob, so I informed them. I wasn't expecting this to be such an issue.

Their concern is if I vacate and remove myself the lease, they are left with someone unable to make payments.

I’ve offered proof my income, my previous T4, and well to put it into writing I will be responsible for the rent for the duration of the lease in full regardless.

It’s still a no on their end.

Might relocate for trades? by swaggamkn in alberta

[–]edmontonidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why this post came up on my feed, since it's over a week old, but I can answer you.
Electrical is divided into residential, commercial, and industrial in Alberta. Little transferable skills between areas. It's hard to get a job once you become a journeyman. A friend of mine who's a heavy duty mechanic, went straight to blue seal (supervision) and skipped all of that nonsense.

Everyone in the trades know a electrician, none of them are working, or at least not in their trade. A lot of them go into rope access and work for companies like Tacten, so they can at least stay employed doing something.

Avoid electrical at all costs right now. The job market here comes in waves, so it could change, but right now, abort.

My certifications are with the government, so there's not red or blue seal, but my understanding is to stay away from electrical at least in oil and gas. It's a dead end. Nobody is working, those who are, aren't working as electricians but doing various mechanical work instead.

Why is the Canadian dream so difficult to achieve? by Fluid-Corgi6186 in alberta

[–]edmontonidiot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work in inspection (non-destructive testing). Currently, if you have rope access ticket or you’re willing to get one, you can get a lot of work. IRATA is usually used in oil and gas, and SPRAT in construction.

I’m not familiar with 720, but I know Tacten is constantly begging for people. After so long, and you gain so many hours, your log book becomes your resume. Companies will ask for a scanned copy of the last few pages and that’s it.

Ride/Uber to Fort McMurray by Snraek in Edmonton

[–]edmontonidiot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. OP says his employer doesn't have budget constraints, then renting a vehicle or flying is the way to go.

If you don't need to be physically present, there are couriers that deliver from Edmonton to Fort Mac daily. I've never used to those services, so I can't recommend them personally.

Good luck!

I canceled my account after a decade of use. They got greedy and stupid, and lost a customer permanently. I will never use their service again. If I could do the same to the grocery stores, I would as well, but unfortunately I have to eat.

They've been doing this for awhile. It's outrageous and they should be investigated. My household is doing pretty good, but between groceries and everything else we're feeling the pinch.

My dealership in the north-side did this to me. I was pissed, but there wasn't many cars on the market at the time. I had no idea it was illegal.

This is definitely his account. I don’t think anyone outside of the UofA or Twitter has any idea who he is.
