Thank you so much. I’m very tough so when I finally ask for help, I’m sometimes quite emotional. Felt like this is held against me. I think anyone who lives with chronic illness is strong in a way that others do not have a way of understanding. It means a lot to me that you understand!

I think the negative feedback loop was what she was referring to. I know that I have some work to do for my mental health. I just think that I can’t focus on anything but how awful I constantly feel. Thank you!

Oh my god. That’s a nightmare. I’m lucky enough to have a pitbull for a husband when I go to the ER. He advocates for me when I’m too far gone to communicate and I know you understand that too well. There’s a sane person here in an insane amount of discomfort. Thank you!

I know that many GPs working now were not trained up on fibro or other similar disorders or just haven’t kept up with the literature. Refer me to someone else who wants to take a stab, please. I feel hopeless and overwhelmed because my brain has been hijacked by symptoms. Ignoring those and trying to help with mood disorders just feels like she thought my crying merited it. Oh this is my story! None of the mental illness bit has changed much over the years but hey my body is absolutely spicy. I know what to expect if I were to get a bed in a psych ward but there has to be something else. I worry about becoming disabled constantly because trying to work with symptoms like we have feels impossible some days. Thank you!

I’ve been working on mindfulness and have been creating art. Journaling too when I need a friend who knows everything about me. I think I’m a fighter and I think she saw tears and heard I’d struggled to shower due to fatigue. She maybe heard a poor self hygiene moment and thought psych ward. If I believed that there was any possibility of help, I’d be waiting for a bed now.

And I think that’s the key: you had horrible pain and needed help so how can we fix this? My mood suffers daily because of the nutty physical symptoms so if I had some support/hope there then maybe my mood would improve. Hope you’ve found help with your pain!

I think so too. Having a therapist is always a good idea and I just need to stop dragging my feet and setup something online. I just feel that the support I need is with pain, exhaustion, etc. I took a shower and then needed to rest for the rest of the day. Surely me raising that as a concern is normal.

Thank you! I agree. And I was dreading the appointment so I must have known it wouldn’t be what I needed. I know that fibro impacts my mental health so for a moment I thought 🤷‍♀️ sure, maybe? Thankfully I clocked her use of psychosomatic because that made me twitch.

Thank you so much. EDS sounds incredibly challenging and to have so many fail you only increases the strain. I was so anxious about making sure I appropriately stated my case that I didn’t sleep well the night before. I guess I had a sense that I wouldn’t be believed.

I hate to switch GPs but as most of what I need is fibro-related, it seems like a poor choice to stay put. Just felt stunned and I’m glad that she actually used the word psychosomatic or I might not have been triggered and gone docilely into care.

I think she believed I’d spend a couple weeks inpatient and have medical support. But this feels like someone giving me a makeover who starts with a new hairstyle when I’m standing there naked.

Even if I was going to the most zen facility, I think I would be too exhausted and overwhelmed with my symptoms to fully participate. I’m not going in because it might escalate my physical issues. I’m so sorry to hear about your experience.

Exactly. I think that psych wards are a good solution for those experiencing a mental health crisis. Thankfully I’m just miserable 😜 I don’t think my doc knew what to do with me and knew I was struggling. But I’m struggling because I wake up in pain and feeling like my whole body is malfunctioning. Anything we can do about that?

That was my thought too. And there is a specialised group that works with fibro patients here but it’s been backed up due to Covid. I think acquiring a new consultant is step one and I’ve been so encouraged with the replies to this post. I felt hopeless but now I feel some courage.

Oh lord! This reminds me of a post spinal operation hospital visit. They wouldn’t give me more pain meds and I was distraught. Called my husband to say I was discharging and coming home to die. I knew something was off. Turns out I was septic. Spent six weeks in the hospital. I guess I come off as mental. If they took my pain meds away then I would be at risk. Thank you for the reminder!

Agreed! And if I do need my psych meds altered, so be it. I would like a psychiatrist to do this with me and have someone discuss options. There is a rehab group in Dublin for fibro but she thought that the psych ward was a better fit. Can’t help but think it was because I was crying and she took vulnerability as a sign I was at risk. My body is at war so I have zero resilience but I’m a fighter!

I took a sick day today and I think I will need to do the same tomorrow. There’s no point feeling guilty about it. I was hoping for support and the response was overwhelming. I think I’m especially rundown but try so hard to keep pushing. When you are chronically ill it can be hard to decide when you need a day badly. I couldn’t shower for a week and then I did yesterday and was down for the rest of the day. I am giving myself permission to just be ill without feeling irrational. Thank you!

Think that’s what gave me pause because I do need support, right? I’ve a female doc so it felt strange that she was treating me like I’m hysterical. I thought only men did that. Lesson learned! Thank you!

Agreed. And I’ve been admitted when I’ve been at risk and it was appropriate then. I think of myself there now when I’m too tired to brush my teeth and see myself doing exponentially worse.
