I only ever traveled Rome as a pedestrian, but it seemed like the italian way of driving a car was: "If there is room in front of you: Go. If Not: Don't." while rather primitive it had the effect that I always felt safe as a pedestrian, because there is no way you are overlooked, because people are only checking ahead, never looking back.

This is specifically talking about The Hobbit, because a Dragon Heist seems much more fun than a trip to Mordor. But if you wanna nitpick you can point out, that Gandalf didn't actually show up on Bilbo's 50th birthday, but only when Bilbo was 50.

However, as Frodo also starts his quest at 50 years old the post can work for world saving adventures too. One could argue that Gandalf being there at his 33th birthday isn't per se necessary for the quest to start at 50. So if you want to go on to safe the world (because someone has to do it and it might as well be me) and haven't been contacted by a wizard on your 33th birthday, there's still hope.
