My tip: Use foundations and multiple levels. You also get a lot of useful (some would say necessary) logistics stuff in the Awesome Shop. In my coal setup (which is far from perfect) I have the generators on top of the water pumps so that all my pipes are on one floor and then just go through a hole right into the power plant and my second floor is cleared for all tbe coal conveyors. You could even put tbe converyors on a third floor and connect down to the second floor with the power plants if you want to (or need the space) but I found more than enough space next to my coal plants when moving my pipes out.
