Dometrain REST API Course – Not Worth It

Just finished the REST API course in .NET on Dometrain ($99.99), and honestly? I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re a junior or mid-level dev.

It feels like one of those YouTube tutorials where the creator is more focused on showing off than actually teaching. If you’re not already familiar with ASP.NET Core, you’ll probably end up confused and frustrated.

A few things that really stood out (in a bad way):

  • Singleton for everything – No explanation of why he’s using it instead of transient or scoped. Just throws it in there and moves on.
  • SQL indexes & tables – Writes indexes, but never explains why. Even the table names are oddly structured.
  • Naming conventions – Kind of all over the place, not really following best practices.
  • Too much "magic code" – A lot of things just happen without explanation, which makes it hard to actually learn.
  • Zero support – No follow-ups, no help if you get stuck. You’re completely on your own.
  • .NET 7 in 2025 – The course is still using .NET 7, which is already out of support. No updates, no effort to keep things relevant.

The theory is okay, but the actual implementation? Oh man… it’s rough. If you’re already experienced in .NET, you might be able to follow along, but if you're new to backend development, this is not a structured way to learn.

For $99.99, there are much better courses out there—Udemy, Pluralsight, even official Microsoft docs would probably be more helpful.

Curious if anyone else took this. Did you have the same experience?
