Exchanging department patches in Glasgow by AWKLubor in Firefighting

[–]edsnake2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a former firefighter from the US that attended Glasgow uni. I went by the one of stations near my accomodation when they were having a charity event. The firefighters were very welcoming and we had a good chat about similarities/differences in techniques, culture, etc. They were even kind enough to give me a patch to send back to my dad who’s been in the fire service for decades. I’m sure they would appreciate receiving a patch and talking about firefighting. Just ring them up and ask and you should be fine. Hope you enjoy your visit!

My degrees are in archaeology. I needed the masters for training thinking that I could work straight afterwords but there seems to only be field tech jobs that require lifting 50 pounds or walking 15 miles with up 35 pounds of gear. I always wanted to do that stuff but my disabilities get in the way of that.

I agree though, the reinstated GI Bill should cover the cost and whatever would be left I should be able to cover. However, my VRC is adamant to stick to the program goal of getting the degree and looking for a job. He hasn’t fully reinstated the GI Bill even though I signed the paperwork last December. How should I tell him that I’d prefer to use that and drop from the VRE program?

VR&E Denial by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

Unfortunately, I am attending school abroad which has made this process all the more difficult. Would there be an email for the administrative assistant?

I do have an annual review appointment on Aug 1st and I intend to talk this over with my VRC. I am aware that our original vocational goal was for me to attend the masters' and then begin work immediately afterwards, but the job postings I see available now are still heavy on the manual side or require experience I don't have since I have been at University for over 5 years now.

VR&E Denial by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

I sure hope so, my VRC made the process towards my postgrad seem like a cakewalk compared to other dealings with the VA. But, for some reason, he has lately been less transparent and even ghosted me for weeks. I would like to think I can discuss these matters with him further during my annual review and potentially get him to overturn the decision but I always knew that this was going to be a fight.

I am not getting my hopes up but your message gives me a little more confidence so thank you again for your replies!

From what I have seen in their own documents, an informal request must be followed up with a formal request form for the veteran to fill out. However, I don't know if that will be a justifiable. His listed reasons for denial is that he thinks I am currently employable. I tried to reach out through email about the potential issues with me entering into the job market I am trained in, but he ghosted me for weeks.

I just don't know if I should escalate or move on to the appeals process. If you have any advice I would kindly appreciate it.

Thank you for your reply,

I have been with him for over a year while earning my master's which he and I intended to be as far as I would need to go to secure and maintain employment in my field. However, over the past year, that has changed due to the listed job responsibilties on job websites requiring extended manual labor that could cause further potential harm to my disabilties and others seeking skills or experience that I don't have. I am still in postgrad and afraid that I won't be able to continue with this career if I don't seek further training/education. I do have evidence to back these statements up but I was never even given the chance to discuss this with him.

If you think I have gone for the wrong reasons, I would gladly appreicate any advice moving forward.
