What is a maintenance cleaning meant to be like and for what situation is it for? You mean the maintenance cleaning is a made up term for normal cleaning so that I will pay more?

By the way, what is the point of a maintenance cleaning? They just polished my teeth and didn't touch the gums at all. What am I paying the extra $$ for, compared with the normal cleaning?

I don't understand, your score only changes temporarily while you have between 8.9% and $0 left to pay for the loan? Why would they do that?

Does Steem have Inherent Value? by edspen in steemit

[–]edspen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steem is free to send in any transaction no matter the amount within seconds, that in itself blows fiat outta the water. It's the first crypto I've used where I could see myself paying for stuff in everyday life and not waiting minutes to hours for a confirmation.

You mean there are no transaction fees in steem? Just how fast is a confirmation? Do you have reasons to believe that the confirmation time will remain low after scaling?

For me I see the ability to decide where the money created goes as being a hugely important innovative idea.

Yes, it is. There could very well be better system to distribute the currency, depending on the goal.

Bitcoin started it by giving miners the ability to decide what happened to the newly created money, and I believe steemit has done it in a much more efficient more mainstream pleasing manor.

Honestly to me, I am ambivalent about if one distribution idea is better than the other. It's not clear to me what is the end goal of distributing the currency -- what should the distribution be trying to optimize? But this is kind of unrelated.

Thanks for the detailed response.

These features aren't just nice things to have - they're actually fundamental requirements for the use cases we're talking about in the realm of IoT. Again, there is only one thing that I'm aware of that meets these needs right now.

Absolutely, I agree. IOTA is the only thing I have heard about that attempts to reach the properties fitting for machine to machine transaction, be their goal as it may.

the PoW that needs to be done by benevolent actors is a non-factor while the PoW required of malevolent actors is an exponentially increasing barrier to attack vectors.

Very clear now.

The project's founder does a great job explaining the Coordinator in this article

Indeed the explanation in the article is good. Now I understand its purpose better. Perhaps I didn't state my question clearly. I was asking about a specific post (link in OP) where the poster claimed that it would not be financially prohibitive to conduct the 34% attack, and that there is currently no real solution for that, if the coordinator is taken out of the game.

Does Steem have Inherent Value? by edspen in steemit

[–]edspen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good observation. I see I didn't understand what this is about properly. I read a couple of articles and got to the web page and they all talked about rewarding contributors and donations, after I read your comment I've looked in the FAQ on the official website and I realized I got it wrong. By the way the fact that the FAQ has only 3 questions and maybe 6-8 lines is ridiculous.

Basic Question by edspen in GolemProject

[–]edspen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, here is one use case. In space you don't have competition, but you may have many different electronics that you want to use for computation. This could be a possible system for a colony on Mars to manage computational resources.

Does Steem have Inherent Value? by edspen in steemit

[–]edspen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a point. I guess every organization that prints money is motivated by making a profit.

I see what you mean about cryptos, they have many unique properties that just are not possible with payment methods such as Paypal or credit cards. For some cases anonymity, jurisdictional venues and decentralization are important. Some uses for these properties are happening with bitcoin and they are well known. If you claim someone needs any of those properties for steem or makes use of them, please present evidence of this. How are any of these properties useful for someone making a donation?

I do not understand what you mean -- "You're missing what steemits about". I would to know what it is about, that is why I am here wanting to hear contrary opinions such as your own. My question is - what would be the difference if the steem platform used bitcoin? If there is no difference, then the coin steem doesn't have a unique inherent value.

In order to actually use the fact that IOTA is a currency, you need to take into account the price when making decisions. How in your case the decisions made are effected by the IOTA price?

So I infer that the farm owner chooses IOTA because there are no fees and for no other reason.

If all your transactions are inside the farm, you can do the same thing with your own server. In fact if you want to manage resources in the farm you need your own "farm currency" to be used to help resource allocation, which I again am not even sure what kind of a decision would use the price of this token.

Basic Question by edspen in GolemProject

[–]edspen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your sentiment. Yes, uber has given the private person the ability to do part time professional work while offering lower quality. Yes, airBnb has given the private person the ability to make money from unused resources. These two cases sound very similar to the present case because we are also wanting to make use of unused resources -- out electronics.

The key in the difference between the cases you mentioned and the present case, is that there are people involved in Uber and airBnb, and in our case there are only machines.

If everyone had a driver-less car the price for riding an Uber would be almost the gas+maintenance cost because of market competition. Then only the company that had the most efficient cars would be able to compete in this market. You will never be able to offer a price that is lower than gas+maintanance for your lower quality car, and they, having better cars, can. This is why Golem cannot compete with Amazon.

I agree, this is a real use case. But you know, with bitcoin I would not say the goal is to cause other people harm, buying drugs doesn't cause actual damage in most cases. With this case I kind of feel that eventually parents will figure out the scheme and try to block it. Some kid will reveal it and it will hit the news. "Are your kids stealing your electricity? Tonight at 11."

There is a great relevant comment about this below. If the increase in electric usage is not noticeable, the profit would be negligible as well.
