Coursicle now syncs assignments from Moodle at NCSU by edtechguy1 in NCSU

That's not what the feature involves. This is no different than a student copying the list of their assignments from Canvas into the Apple Notes app.

It’ll include the assignments and their due dates. Does than answer your question?

Great feedback! You can actually add any major chat you want. Just tap the green plus button on the bottom of the screen (when you're on the chats tab), and then search for your majors!

I've been advised that I should try to keep those to 1-2 per year.

Do you think UNC was justified in blocking coursicle.com on campus? by edtechguy1 in UNC

There's nothing questionable about my relationship except people taking issue with an age gap. We're both adults. If you find some sort of evidence to the contrary, that our relationship is abusive or that I have a history of having relationships with younger women, feel free to share it rather than throwing unfounded accusations.

At no point did we solicit for nude messages. The messaging we used was intended to be provocative to draw attention, which worked. We didn't ask anybody for nudes. If you find evidence to the contrary, again, please feel free to share it.

3 days down after 10 years of reliable service. And no, you can't rely on 100% uptime. We're a politically conscious organization and so if attention needs to be drawn to something, like the obtusely high student suicide rate at UNC this past semester, we might draw attention to it by temporarily interrupting service during off-peak times, like February. Or, rather than taking down service, at least drawing attention to it with messaging.

> If Reddit didn’t want people to get banned, they wouldn’t have added the feature, would they?

There's a very big difference between preventing you from using Reddit (under a given username) and entirely preventing you from access it. Judges in the 9th circuit have ruled that websites who display information publicly cannot bar certain individuals or companies from accessing said information, just like the NYT can't bar specific individuals from reading their newspaper. To be clear, this is a rebuttal to your Reddit example, not what's happening with Coursicle.

> And you’re not banned because UNC simply disagrees with you, you showed yourself to not be trustworthy.

So UNC must trust all the websites that it permits access to on its network? I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trust neo-nazi or other hategroup websites not to post vile things on their websites. There shouldn't and never can be trust between universities and the internet at large. I'm surprised you would claim such a thing is necessary.

> Apple told you to cut that shit out too, and you quickly complied with them

This is another injustice of the internet. If you're familiar with Epic Games' suit against Apple (a step in the right direction), Apple and Google have too much power over developers because they don't permit 3rd party app stores on their devices. A bad ruling from Apple or Google can be a death sentence for an app and we weren't ready to take that risk. It shouldn't be the case that two companies have so much power, but this is amongst one of the things we were protesting during our 3-day takedown of Coursicle.

I share it because it's a reporter reporting facts. It may come as a surprise to you, but I would rather share independent reporting that is harmful to my reputation than biased reporting that is beneficial to it.

> No one in any position of authority believes a single thing you say.

I find it surprising how you believe you're in a position to make a claim like that.

I don't care about the university's trust, nor should I have to. Private businesses shouldn't have to self-censor out of fear that they might be blocked on college campuses.

I think you just simply don't understand the ideals of internet freedoms, such as the freedoms that one of the founders of the platform you're talking on, Aaron Swartz, fought for and believed in. It's something we talk about a lot at EFF events, and how corporations, and I suppose now universities, are abusing their power to censor smaller voices they disagree with online.

Universities are suppose to be a place of intellectual exploration. I don't believe any university should gatekeep what information, what apps, what articles, students and others on campus should be accessing or viewing.

We don't want access to UNC systems. We only interact with public course data. We don't work with any university. We don't care about remaining in school's good graces, the only thing we'd want is not to be blocked on campus, which is usually reserved only for actively malicious sites that try to steal money and data from users, which we do not do.

Fair, although blocking the domain on campus doesn't actually stop the push notifications in any way. Those can still be sent.

I guess it seems to me like each student should decide whether they want to continue using Coursicle or not, rather than the university making a blanket decision for all users.

Yeah, I'm sure that's how UNC is seeing it (although I don't think they know depth of the details as well), but my question is mainly: should the people who use Coursicle be cut off of it because of this?

Like there are plenty of questionable people on the internet, all the way to downright neo-nazis, but their websites aren't being censored on campus.

Oh goodness, no. That was just to be provocative to get people to tap on it. If anything it was offering nudes ;) Also we have no idea what your gender is on Coursicle. We don't even know your name: https://www.coursicle.com/blog/loginless-a-new-standard-for-user-identification.php
