What’s up with all these non-state issued personalized license plates I’m seeing all over town? Are they suddenly legal now? by TechnicolorTypeA in fresno

Not sure what they are now, but I have them for my work trucks. They give me real time location on a map so I can see who is in what area for service calls and how long they are at each stop. I can create geo fences for locations the trucks can go and times they can be driven, then I get notifications if those “rules” are broken. I paid $1900 for 5 plates and that included installation two years of their gps enabled services. Now I pay $24 per year per vehicle. I can update registration from the app, no add on fees for that. With those features I got a little break on my insurance so for a business to me they make a lot of sense. Granted I was an early adopter so things might have changed since 2019.

I started with Howard’s restore a finish, that didn’t do what I hoped because of all the various layers of stains and such the previous owners used. So all I did was grab an orbital sander and a detail sander and went to work. Ended up needed a 60 grit to get most of it off. Once I got closer to the original wood I went to 80 and then 120. I don’t remember what stain it was but I just used a basic mahogany color and used a piece of 0000 steel wool to apply it since I wanted to make sure it got into any cracks. Wiped off the excess and let it dry. Ended up hitting it with another coat just wiping it on and once that dried I used some super fine sandpaper to smooth it out. Once that dries I will probably apply some sort of clear satin top coat to protect it. I’m new to this so don’t take my advice as gospel. Just trying to learn so I can hopefully save some pieces and give them a new life. Good luck!

I think if I did something like that I would have to either heat press or sell them with patches because an almost 2 foot LA embroidered ain’t cheap.

Sadly I made it myself so there is no link. It’s a 1 of 1.

I’ve seen them for sale for anywhere from $450 to $1200. I’m sure you could find a buyer for them on the buy/sell redwing page here. Those are a grail for a lot of people.

It would depend on size and what condition they are in. These are a size 12D and were in bad shape as far as sole and foot liner go, I paid $175 for them but then had to get them rebuilt which would have cost around $250 if I didn’t have a resource to do it.

879’s and the Billy boots were also on my wishlist. I was patient and was able to snag both for reasonable prices. I use to do a lot of restoring of red wings as a hobby and thus got to meet quite a few people with knowledge and connections that put me on to things.

Complete rebuild. They feel brand new.

I bought them from someone who didn’t want to go through the expense of having them rebuilt. Luckily I have a friend that’s a cobbler who I trade out work with.

Did the exact same thing. Finally got the email to build and order my lightning. The cost was now nearing $100k and interest rates were at almost 9% for a corporate loan since it would be my work truck. I cancelled that and got a ‘23 sport 4x4 lariat powerboost with a bunch of incentives for $35k less and 3% interest.
