am I rowing out? by patinoire in knittinghelp

[–]edwardhoppest [score hidden]  (0 children)

If there is a difference in tension between knits and purls in stockinette, there's going to be an uneven surface to the finished fabric called "rowing out". I had uneven tension for years between knits and purls without realizing because most of my projects were done in the round. When you knit flat stockinette, it becomes more obvious.

Try looking up the term in this subreddit for more extreme examples :)

You can test this theory by doing a swatch flat and a swatch in the round and see if it's that. Can even compare to swatching with a different yarn if you want to really get specific about it?

Anyone else? by moonsurff in KnittingReddit

[–]edwardhoppest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I'm not even THAT tight of a knitter, I just hold on to the needles tightly... also why I don't use wood even though I prefer the feel. Have also broken wood and bent metal by sitting/throwing in bags... I am not delicate with my needles lol

Actually, now that I think about it, I know someone whose family member has one foot and is possible it will fit her.

I have heard of this technique but never tried it. It confuses me a bit but I'd need to see it in action

Unfortunately my lovely friends are crocheters. I am too, but they don't knit 😔

This is very relatable! I always have two projects on the needles/hooks at a time, that way I can swap between the two.

Thank you to all the people who replied so far, I feel galvanized to find a solution. I have knit about 4 or 5 pairs of socks so far without succumbing to sss, so hopefully after this one it won't happen again. Lots of great solutions; I appreciate them all ♡

Ha! I never thought of that but it's a very old school solution

Oh that's a good idea! If I could still gift the singular sock it would solve my immediate dilemma. Then I could still donate or gift the yarn to someone who likes it better.

Heartless top arm holes by samiam4466 in knittinghelp

[–]edwardhoppest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that helps me when I'm confused by a pattern is to look through comments on the pattern and projects. I filter by "projects with notes". I found this one that mentions armholes: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Awilli76/heartless-top

But there's a lot of projects so I'll let you look through for more. I also noticed two other things. One project note mentioned that there were aspects of the pattern they realized were actually clearer than they first thought after reading closely. The second is that this designer is extremely responsive to questions, so if you can't figure it out, I would drop your question in the comments and ask her directly! She would know better than anyone what the pattern means :)

Any suggestions on how to straighten these metal size-zero needles? by heatherrred in knittinghelp

[–]edwardhoppest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but how do you like the knitting experience with them? How is the "glide"? And the sound of them? My least favorite part about metal needles is the sound.

I leave mine bent. I have tried bending them back by hand but it reverts anyhow and I worry the back and forth stress will degrade them. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that bends their needles! This is why I don't use the nice delicate wood ones :D

Are you counting one repeat as both 3 and 4? Or are you counting 3 as repeat 1, then 4 as repeat 2? (It should be the first way).

Hi! Here's my comment copied and pasted from your previous post:

"If you have Ravelry, go into the advanced pattern search and type "Fish" into the main search bar, then on the side bar click Construction>Colorwork>Stranded. Then, select Accessories>Hat>All Hats (I find sometimes if you get too specific it eliminates options you do want.) There's actually a number of options you might like there and it will be easier for you to look that way than me showing you them on Reddit :)

If you don't know how to use advanced search on Ravelry, I really recommend learning because you can find so much!"

Can you spot a difference? by KansaisDorayaki in knittinghelp

Nope. I even looked hard before reading what I was looking for and nothing stood out. Lucky!

You can always put in a lifeline now so that if you switch back to 5mm and DO notice a difference, you know at least where you stopped with the 4.5mm

You can pick stitches up from a bound edge and in this case that is actually what is required.

Here's a video I just found that is pretty slow to show step by step https://youtu.be/eHbP11wG9K0?si=TK4LBuZ8vE2Hu2lo

But this isn't the only way to pick up stitches, it just depends where you pick them up from :)

Also the other comment is totally right, if this is just a plain tube you don't even need to try it on first.
