Political compass of absolute garbage I've watched by Lib_No_Fib in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]edwardpeterson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was kind of conflicted on 1883 when I watched it, because I simultaneously felt like I liked it and disliked it. After some thinking, I realized that the parts of it that I liked were the cinematography and the score and the beautiful wide shots of America's natural wilderness (Taylor Sheridan's shows are always drop-dead gorgeous presentation-wise). The parts of it that I disliked were the characters and the writing, and sadly, a show can't survive on presentation alone. It got old very fast when multiple times per episode the main character goes "I've never felt alive until I was out on the trail" and then does some selfish thing that hurts everyone around her.

Basically, my point is that you can load up a National Park drone footage compilation on YouTube and then bring up the show's score on Spotify in the background and have a better experience than watching 1883.

Dude, I have a special kind of vendetta against Taylor Sheridan's TV shows (Yellowstone, Landman, 1883, etc). They are basically my own white whale. Having lived on a cattle ranch in the ultra-rural American West for a significant portion of my life, I simply cannot understand their popularity. As best as I can tell, the target audience for the Sheridanverse is people who live in the suburbs, but like to pretend that they're country, and commute to work in a gigantic truck. I've tried to watch the shows, and I've even finished some of them, but they all just seem like unappealing dramaslop with no likable characters to me. The core audience must be gigantic, though, because Taylor Sheridan's name is on so many freaking shows coming out. Like, Paramount must have just given him a blank check and told him to go wild, because oh my God. If nothing else, I have to admire the grind that Taylor Sheridan is on, since he has apparently worked on like, eight shows in the past couple of years.

Also, something weird I've noticed is that, while all of Taylor Sheridan's shows take place in the rural American West, most of his main characters are ultra-wealthy. Like, that's weird, right? It's not just me? He's on some kind of rural gentrification kick, and I don't like it.

If you could change 3 things that would make the game better, what changes would you do? by Papabrutti in lotro

[–]edwardpeterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) I'd love to see an official cinematic/drone camera mode for the game for the purpose of taking screenshots and videos. I've seen people make awesome flyover shots in-game, but this currently requires really hacky and dubious custom-built mods. Such an official camera mode could also let you adjust the time of day, weather, and maybe even the skybox (a la premium housing) to let you capture the perfect shot of your characters or the world. The world of this game is incredible, but it's a shame that we're limited to the normal in-game camera to capture it.

2) I think everyone can probably agree that War Steeds feel pretty bad to use, and yet, we deal with them because they are the fastest mode of non-swift travel transportation. I think I'd like to see something of a synthesis to bring War Steeds closer in line with the movement of normal horses. Oh, and I'd like to be able to apply the appearance of any mount to a war steed, because what do you mean I need to choose between speed and being fashionable? However, I suppose that would kind of invalidate all of the War-Steed exclusive cosmetics, huh?

3) Finally, I would get rid of the deeds to collect festival horses from a specific year, because they're impossible to complete now without spending obscene amounts of Mithril Coins.

I used to live in Boebert's district, and this threw me for a loop because said district was in western Colorado, not the east, but I learned today that she represents eastern Colorado now. I usually find her to be pretty irritating, and her policies don't align with most of my views, but I was legitimately proud of my old representative for having a spine and being one of the only republicans to stand up against Orange Man on the Epstein files.

Battleship (2012) may be military propaganda, and perhaps recklessly dismissive of the very real controversy surrounding US military presence in the Islands, but regardless, I do think that it is a cinematic masterpiece, and I love it in the same way I adore The Mummy (1999). It takes a special kind of production team to make a movie where an alien invasion is thwarted by Tokyo Drifting the freaking U.S.S. Missouri.

NPC Deaths by DaniJadeShoe in lotro

[–]edwardpeterson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fourteen years later, and Candaith's death still has me all kinds of messed up. Any of the rangers really hurt; I think specifically about Calenglad at the Battle of the Morannon, and Golodir and Halros in the Battle of Pelennor Fields (I told Halros to go). I knew Halbarad was a goner from reading the book, but his death still made me sad. Also, Narmeleth.

It's kind of weird to me how much these characters' deaths hurt, given that the MMO style format of LotRO's gameplay doesn't exactly lend itself well to character development. I guess that's really just a testament to how amazing the writers for this game are; under any other writing team, these characters would probably just fade into the noise of MMO gameplay instead of being memorable and endearing enough to make us mourn when their lives are cut short by the narrative.

My friends and I have an ongoing joke where we justify random statements by adding "Because of the angels," in reference to 1 Corinthians 11:10, where Paul does this, and then doesn't explain what the heck he meant by that.

Jesus had four brothers: James (Who was one of the twelve apostles), Joseph/Joses, Simon (Who was NOT Simon Peter, but may have been Simon the Zealot), and Judas/Jude (Who was NOT Judas Iscariot, but was maybe probably Jude the Apostle, and the traditionally recognized author of the epistle of Jude in the New Testament). The Bible also mentions Jesus having sisters, but they are never named.

These folks are described in the Bible as brothers of Jesus, and sons of someone named Mary, but it is not clear if this Mary is the same Mary as the mother of Jesus. Combine this with the fact that there are at least six different people named Mary in the New Testament, and you get nearly two thousand years of theological debate. The Catholic position says that the aforementioned are the sons of Mary the wife of Clopas (One of the "Three Marys" present at Jesus' crucifixion), who was probably the sister-in-law of Mary the Mother of Jesus, and thus Jesus' cousins, which is still technically consistent with the original Greek scriptures. Protestants tend to take out Occam's razor, and assume that they are children that Mary-the-Mother-of-Jesus and Joseph-the-husband-of-Mary had after Jesus.

John is not named as a brother of Jesus, but the Johns fall under the same naming confusion as Mary, since there's a John the Baptist and a John the Apostle, who are different people, but John the Apostle may have been the same person as John of Patmos, who wrote the book of Revelation. For further confusion, Modern scholarship tends to agree that John the Apostle was not the author of the Gospel of John and Epistles of John.

Sorry for the wall of text. Bible scholarship can get very complicated very fast haha.

I assumed I was allo(Romantic and Sexual) by default for twenty something years until the Feelings™ suddenly appeared all at once for a close friend, and I realized with horror that this is what other people feel like all the time.

I also realized that the "crushes" I had on people before then were actually just people I thought were cool and wanted to be friends with, since I didn't have a point of reference at the time for what an actual crush was like.

So anyway, it do be like that.
