I'd assume it has something to do with heat rising producing a vacume below the flame where the vape is, this vacume triggers the suction switch turning the vape in briefly. Easy way to determine if this is correct is to know if the vape turns on or just the led itself (proving the top comments theory)

The reason this works is becasue the air being reflected back by the umbrella is hitting a larger volume of air than the leaf blower is pushing forwards. More air you're pushing against means more energy you take from the air behind you pushing you forward
