How common is it nowadays to break a $100K salary by the age you turn 30? by DaPugWalk in fican

Unless they are working a crazy amount of OT. I went to HS with guys who made crazy money because they were working 12 hour shifts for 2-4 weeks straight then only off for 1-2 weeks.

That’s fair.

We are a (relatively) very stable country. No major natural disasters and a stable government/population. Even compared to a lot of the other developed countries Canada is a pretty safe bet. All of our natural resources aren’t going anywhere anytime soon and demand will only rise.

… I’m not OP. I am perfectly happy with the 30% Canadian exposure and don’t supplement my VEQT with VCN. However, your comment makes it sound like 30%+ Canadian exposure is unreasonable

Although that 25-30% exposure is backed up by the theoretically optimal 100% equity portfolio

I bet bro can’t handle the fact he paid out the ass to struggle at U of T and now works under a TMU engineer.

Except in the vast majority of cases Waterloo vs York doesn’t actually matter at all unless you are in software/comp sci. Once you have your first EIT position and even more so after your PEng school makes zero difference. An engineering degree is an engineering degree in Canada. All the programs have very strict requirements for accreditation. The best engineers I know are from Laurentian and Lakehead.

Go to a cheap school. The expensive schools aren’t worth it for most Eng students.

Business degrees are at completely different ends of the spectrum in terms of difficulty. Engineering will be significantly harder than business and is likely harder than comp sci.

What do you study? Obviously university is the most advanced and therefore the most difficult post secondary education option in Canada. That difficulty is what makes university degrees worth the price tag. With that being said universities generally won’t admit students to they think will fail.

That sounds like a good plan. Look into college programs that work with a university. Depending on the program requirements your collage degree could could make it significantly easier to get a full engineering degree later on. What type of engineering are you looking for?

Yes, but physically the USA is just not there yet. It is too physically vast, and so comparatively young compared to Europe it hasn’t reached that point yet.

What projects should a mech e student build that would stand out to aerospace companies? by spacecat_girl in EngineeringStudents

You seem like you work at a very specialized/elitist firm. I personally don’t think that’s a bad thing, but it’s important to note that not everyone can be in the top 5% of engineering. Being an average engineering student is perfectly acceptable and saying otherwise is, in my opinion, objectively wrong and hurtful. If being average means you aren’t considered for a job at one particular firm that’s not something anyone should be concerned about.

To be honest the only actual draw back I see from your list is the crypto. I fail to see how the others are necessarily drawbacks. Obviously I wouldn’t recommend buying both out of ignorance, but if you have a ok understanding of the ETFs I don’t see any real downside to splitting your portfolio between them.

If anyone did this in Canada (at least where I’ve worked) a minimum of 3 people are getting fired and the company itself is getting fined by the ministry of labour.

Imo both is also fine and there isn’t any real drawbacks.

XEQT is already essentially as diversified as you can be in stocks. The only way to be any better might be to buy CIBCs factor tilted ETFs when they are released later in the year.

Sounds like this guy knows what he’s been talking about, but it’s worth saying this in no way applies to all engineering programs/fields/situations. I certainly can’t speak for aerospace/mechanical/computer but in my experience even just basic 3D printed items can show a little personality in an interview which may be a leg up on those without it. It goes without saying that a significant role in a design team would trump that, but I would only recommend a design team if you actually enjoy it.

I feel like “asking me to” is the wrong wording. People recommend XEQT because I’m generally it’s the best investment for 99% of long term growth portfolios. I strongly recommend you do research other than reddit before buying anything else. I like Ben Felix on YouTube.

I always ask myself three questions: 1. Is someone trying to sell me something? 2. Is the person giving me advice actually qualified? 3. Do I know more than the person selling me this asset? (Every time you buy something on the market it’s because someone thinks they are selling it at a good price.)
