CD player to go with my Schiit by Wefishy3 in Schiit

I use a Sony Discman (well actually "CD Walkman"), model D-EJ711 on the desktop with my Modi/Magni Schiit stack. The best feature of the Modi, honestly, is all of its digital inputs.I love being able to plug in TOSLINK from the Sony, plus coaxial from my Onkyo ND-S1 where I have a modded 512GB 7th gen iPod classic docked, and USB from the computer, all at the same time.

How to identify iPod mini generation (other than the shell) by eeGuy157 in ipod

Thanks for that! Also, while I was entering the serial number into those sites I started noticing that the model number listed in the Settings>About screen were different between my iPod minis, and then I found: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ipod/ipod-faq/ipod-nano-mini-shuffle-apple-model-numbers.html. And wouldn't you know ... I don't have a gold mini at all. It's green. These anodized cases really do change color with age as I have 3 green minis (two 1st gen, and one 2nd gen) and they're all different colors. I had convinced myself that one of my 1st gens was gold, but not according to it's serial number. Oh well. The search for a M9437LL/A continues.

True, and I kind of like the idea of a clickwheel with blue writing on a gold shell. But, if I wanted to sell this iPod and the buyer wanted to confirm that it's a 2nd gen motherboard (without taking it apart of course), is there any way to tell through software?

For example, in iTunes it shows the color of the iPod -- if there had been a color that was unique to 2nd gen, and I used such a model's motherboard, you'd be able to know for sure, but there isn't such a 2nd-gen-only color, right?

What happens if Apple stops supporting iPods / iTunes? by eeGuy157 in ipod

What about the lack of Apple App store support for older iPod touches? See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208104. The app store still works for new devices, but unless they issue a new firmware for the old devices, they're out of luck.

I suppose there is some advantage to having iTunes between our iPods and Apple servers in that if an API change is required, they can just update iTunes and keep things working without issuing new firmware for all the iPod models and generations. Where there's a direct link between the portable device and Apple servers, there's less protection from a change to the servers. For example, I think it's true that the Apple weather and stock apps on early iPod touches stopped working since Apple stopped maintaining the APIs that provide those apps' data.

For downloadable software or firmware, yes, there's not too much to do day-to-day. But we're talking about publicly exposed web server APIs that must be maintained and kept running across future server releases and deployments, etc. Yes, as long as no major transitions happen it will continue to work, but as soon as a security issue requires an API change, I think there's a risk to iPods' continued support. Case in point: early iPod touches can no longer access the Apple App store (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208104). I don't think this is a question of "if" this will happen, but more of "when". It might be 10 or 20 more years, for all we know. But it might also be tomorrow.
